JohnG - I hate characters who abuse like that - as you say, it was necessary. I've played the soundtrack four times already. It's very clear that the director temp-tracked that particular plot line with Bernard Herrmann music.

I guess I blew it last week. I was at the Bedford Playhouse for a brief time to do something for them, and in turn they invited me to stay and watch that French movie from France which was about to begin. It sounded worthwhile, but I wasn't quite in the mood to sit for a movie (this was around noon on a gorgeous day) and I felt I needed to be on my way to do some other things - which really could have been done much later in the day. Now of course it's not playing in a theeder, and I wish I'd done that.

Laundry took forever, but it's finished and put away. One of the cats - I suspect Stella since she's prone to diarrhea - either vomited or shat on the bathroom rug this afternoon, so I have more laundry on Sunday or Monday.

I enjoyed Opening Night a lot! It was a pretty faithful adaptation of the movie, using the songs to deepen the emotions of the characters.

After saying I would be one of the few Americans to see this, I sat next to a Rufus Wainwright superfan who flew in from Chicago just to see this show. He loved it!

My one quibble was the ending, which changed the tone from musical drama to musical comedy. It's not as clear as in the movie that they are ad-libbing the whole scene, with the playwright smiling throughout. And then they tack a musical comedy number onto the curtain call. Maybe this is supposed to represent Myrtle's delusions. Or maybe preview audiences found the original ending too dark, so they tried to lighten it up?
