Good morning, all! The weird dreams continue: last night involved a meeting of CANDIDE fans in what appeared to be a cross between an HHW assemblage, the NYPL, and my grandmother's house in Ashland, KY. I did have a lovely discussion with Leonard Bernstein about Victor Herbert during the course of it. Barbara Cook was there, in an 18th-Century gown, looking about 25 and weighing around 110 lbs. We are approaching March, which will be the 50th anniversary of the show's closing, but I don't know what's going on in my mind!

DR Dan, I too love BLEAK HOUSE. There are rougher times appproaching. This is not one of Dickens' sunnier books.

I had no marmalade this morning. I did have oatmeal, raisins and a banana and a cup of coffee with which to begin my birthday.

Also on this date (February 2nd) in:

1653 New Amsterdam - now New York City - was incorporated

I knew there was a reason I moved here. Only 300 years before I was born New Amsterdam rose up and began preparations to welcome me.

Well I made it through yesterday nicely. Mostly quietly, but there was a nice surprise in the evening. As much as I was dreading the particular day, It turned out to be very special. The support of my Hianes friends made it even more so.

TOD:

A book I always wanted to see on film is Mark Helprin's WINTER'S TALE. Because of its spans of time and location, I've believed that the only way it could be properly handled was as a miniseries for TV. But having seen how such novels as LORD OF THE RINGS have been handled with aplomb, I can see it being done as a two hour plus motion picture. As far as casting, the only thing that comes to mind right now would be signing up Johnny Depp as lead character Peter Lake.

And I'm very surprised that Caleb Carr's THE ALIENIST has never been filmed. One would think that this would be a filmmaker's dream, with its turn of the century atmospheric setting and its mystery/thriller plot. At the time I first read it, I pictured Judd Hirsch as the psycholigist/detective. I'm not immediately sure who I would cast today. Dare I say Mandy Patinkin?

A book that I think would make a fine independent film (indepenednet film only becuase of limited audience) would be the Foster Hirsch bio of Harold Prince called HAROLD PRINCE AND THE AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE. The new edition, which includes Bounce and other more recent projects, has an unexpectedly beautiful arc in the return to working with Sondheim that I think could be meaningful to indie film audiences even beyond the theater nuts. Whether it would work comemercially is another story, but I'd love to see this book filmed, possibly with Ed Harris starring as Prince, not sure who as Sondheim. Sam Mendes would, I think, be the director of choice.
