I shall be truant for the day . I'm attending a funeral some three hours or more drive away. ( a family friend for 55 years who would have been 80 in a couple of weeks time).

Good morning, all! I really like quiet Sunday mornings; Mozart's Great Mass in C-minor is playing, the coffee's on the stove, and 82nd Street this morning seems very subdued, which isn't always the case among the homeless waiting for food from Holy Trinity Church across the street.

I'm back to Toyland for a few hours this morning, then I've got an arrangement to work on here. Tonight, I need to finish getting my tax receipts in order for Thursday's visit to the accountant, and I'm looking forward to the next instalment of BLEAK HOUSE.

Yesterday's topic was lines from plays and musicals, so I'll start a topic; since a lot of operas are also based on plays, do our DRs have any favorite arias, duets, or ensembles from the opera world? To make it a bit easier, I've included favorites from CANDIDE, since in 1956 it was billed as "a comic operetta" and a lot of these moronic current productions like Trevor Nunn's miss the fact the score is an operatic one, but I also believe PORGY AND BESS amd SWEENEY TODD are operas.

Good morning, DRJRand55! Why do I suspect that cornfield innocence is all a put on to hide some glorious light? I agree with you about the Widow, one of the great musical theatre scores, and "Un Bel Di"! With Puccini you can hardly ever go wrong: Sir Andrew thought enough of the duet in FANCIULLA DEL WEST to steal it for POTO!

The first aria that instantly pops in my mind as my favorite is "Nessun Dorma" from TURANDOT. I love to hear Pavarotti's renditions of it, but even Deanna Durbin did an English version of it to brilliant effect in FIRST LOVE.

Reading over that list of upcoming Warner DVDs was very exciting seeing the classics that are on their way to us, but I'm VERY disappointed to see that THE PIRATE wasn't one of the listed titles. I will do my best to ask about it at the forum conference on February 21st if my dial-up connection can log on. Last time they did this, I wouldn't gain entry and had to read the transcript the next day.

Reading bk's talk about the Super Bowl reminds me that I have never watched an entire Super Bowl in the previous 39 that they've had. In fact, I could count the total minutes I've watched them combined on the fingers of my two hands. Just not at all interested in them, but I'm sure today is a highly anticipated day to a great many folks. I'm glad for them, and I hope the game turns out to be an exciting one for them.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

I let myself stay in bed until Noon. -Of course, since I didn't really end up falling asleep until around 4:00am... -Was just sort of restless last night... My mind is just starting to get in gear for my return back to NYC later this week... And all the stuff I would like to get done before heading back up... I have a feeling I'll be making lots of lists over the next few days, and I'll have a lot of prioritizing to get done. -But that's a good thing.

As for DR elmore's Topic of the Day...

I would basically duplicate your list, DR elmore. -However, I do have to say that G&S still is not my cup of tea - even as casual listening. -I think I'm still scarred from playing rehearsals for the Washington Savoyards a couple of years ago... Some of those dyed-in-the-wool G&Sers are, well, sort of scary.

Otherwise...

"Steal Me, Sweet Thief" was one of the first arias I ever accompanied. Beautiful, emotional. I also like the baritone aria from The Old Maid and the Thief, "When the air sings of summer" - at least I think that's what the title is. Isn't it?

"Ebben? Ne andro lontano" from La Wally - Yes, I first heard this in the movie Diva.

"Elle a fui" from Les Contes d'Hoffmann

"Deh vieni non tardar", "Dove sono", "Porgi amor", - Mozart, Le Nozze di Figaro

"The Embroidery Aria" - Britten, Peter Grimes - Truly a haunting piece of music.

"To this we've come", Madga's Aria - Menotti, The Consul - Another haunting aria.

"What a movie!" - Bernstein, Trouble in Tahiti - And this one is hoot to play too! Fun!

...And that's about all that comes to mind for now, although I know I have many, many more operatic favorites.

Must be in the air... I finally folded some laundry this morning that I did two days ago. And I also tidied up a bit of stuff in my room here too. It's amazing just how "good" a floor looks when you can actually see it!

...And I also have to say that it's been very nice not having a 2:00 matinee today... Just been a nice leisurely morning/afternoon... Well, since I didn't get out bed until about an hour and a half ago...

I'll head in for the show around 4:30. We have the kids pre-show rehearsal at 5:15, then the show at 6:00. And we should be done by 8:23... Then since they will start some of the strike tonight, I have to clear my area of the pit. Thankfully, I just have to make sure to take my keyboard pedals and chair with me, so I should be out the pit in no time, but I'll probably help things along by dressing my cables and such. And then the party in the lobby...

It's been a good run. Good people. Good process. Yes, there were some "issues" for me during the rehearsal process, but the show must go on, and it has. I really have had a wonderful time, and the past couple of weeks have been a great warm-up for Lestat in NYC. On Broadway.

I just feel a little weird right now in that I'm not really feeling sad about the show closing. And I even know, sense, that this will be my last show at Arena for a while - regardless of the success or failure of Lestat. It's just time to move on.

...Of course, I'll probably be blubbering like an idiot come the final downbeat... We'll see...
