BRIGHT AND EARLY
« on: February 11, 2006, 12:57:06 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very Bright and Early, and now it is time for you to post until the Bright and Early cows come home - they're currently running the Eat My Muffin routine.

I'm the first poster again? Where are the east coast people??

Today I am going for a hike. Perhaps I'll have a photo or two later.

Yes, WHO stages these opening ceremonies?  It was pretty bad....although I think the "skier" made up of performers was the worst, for me.

Oh well....and there WAS all of that disco music for the parade of nations, my guess is that MOST of the athletes did NOT know what was being sung as they were marching around the stadium....."At first I was alone, I was petrified....."

DR TOMovOZ - congratulations on your money!

Congratulations to DR RODZINSKI on watching FROM HELL IT CAME....it may have killed him.  That Tobonga the walking tree is a terror!

I liked the review of this movie in Steven Schuer's TV MOVIE book:

FROM HELL IT CAME. To hell with it.

Today is the day of the concert at the World of Wisdom bookstore by friend of DR RODZINSKI's friend Matthew - Silouan.  I am working 9 hours today, and hoping we have LOTS of customers.

I will take some photographs for those who might be interested.

Abbott & Costello - the usual routines, plus one where Lou was onstage singing and Bud was instructing the stage manager to raise and lower the "legs" on either side of the stage.

Martin & Lewis.....

But I guess my favorite routine - one that I saw once and still remember and laugh about:

Nichols & May - the Bargain Funeral.

May:  And just where did you see our ad?
Nichols:  TV Guide.

DH Richard and I watched the Olympic ceremony last night only until the end of the parade of nations.  I did like the speed skaters with the flaming helmets and Richard liked the Canadians' hats.

And, although we might be sick of them at the end of 2 weeks, I thought many of the commercials were more clever than the ones during the Super Bowl.  I especially like the one that portrays "risk" as sniffing the milk carton and then pouring the milk into your coffee anyway.

Some of the commercials were funny.

I guess since it is all - or most - on taped delay....you can REALLY see the programmers dividing everything up and timing and staging it all JUST to GET IN the commercials.  And the commentators trying to build suspense just makes it worse....."We'll have that when we come back....."

Oh well....and I am VERY tired of Bode Miller...and have been for a few weeks.  It's not a story, folks....  Sometimes MEDIA interest is mistaken for public interest, and we get stuck with all the reports on the "controversy"...manufactured though it may be.

ANYWAY.....I do like the competitions, especially the skiing and skating!

I'm spending the first hour of my workday in Telephone Reference and just took a question from someone looking for sheet music for "Lida Rose," preferably in 4 part harmony.  The vocal selections book for The Music Man has what appears to be 2 voices and the librarian who's working on it at the desk is asking me for music advice.  Boy, are we in trouble if I'm the music expert on duty today.

Good mornig, all!  I slept quite late this morning, said to hell with the office today, and I shall putter about here until 12:30 and then go up to Karen Ziemba's.  I need some rejuvenation pills.

DR JRand55, I sort of feel the same way about Bode Miller, but he's been made the US poor-boy-makes-good hero for this year's Olympics, whether we wants the constant attention or not.  My other feelings are, good for him, run with it, become famous:  he's a much more honest celebrity than that celebutramp Paris Hilton who became known for two things:  sex and wealth, both of which get too much attention for her to be considered classy.

I'm hearing pros and cons about KISMET:  I saw the Lincoln Center revival, which I loved, and so far friends have either liked or loathed the Encores! presentation.  It sounds to me that Lonny Price forgot it's basically a burlesque show and that the Bagdad of KISMET is a metaphor for Minsky's; it was a camp then, and it probably needs a director like Charles Ludlam now.  The original Knoblock play with Otis Skinner owed a lot to the popularity of the recently-published RUBAIYAT, the Richard Burton stories of his decadent life and his translation of the Arabian Nights, all those exotic Eastern locales that inspired operettas like CHU CHIN CHOW and the Victor Herbert song "Baghdad" with its KISMET references in 1912 at the same time; of course, that's all a hundred years ago, and the piece is an exotic comedy with a glorious score.  The Encores! casting looks mediocre to me, although Marin Mazzie seems right to me after loving her as Lili Vanessi, something she has in common with the great Anne Jeffreys.

TOD:
Martin & Lewis:  I loved "Scared Stiff" as a kid
Hope and Crosby in "The Road to Utopia"
Abbot and Costello in "Buck Privates" and "A&C Meet Frankenstein"

DR Cillaliz, I did catch enough of the Ferrari to decide it was time to turn off the tv and read a bit of Anthony Rapp's book WITHOUT YOU.  I bought it yesterday, along with MANHUNT, the new book about the Lincoln assassination, and  MOZART'S WOMEN by Jane Glover.

I hope the rest of the move goes smoothly and that you have hot water today.

The final hour or so of the Opening Ceremonies was decidedly better than the first few hours.  I thought the aerial acrobats forming The Dove was pretty cool, and quite beautiful.  -Although, I would have preferred a less close-up shot of the formation.

And I did wonder if Pavarotti was lip-syncing... I mean they usually do a pre-mix of the music anyway for broadcast, so...  Anything is possible.

Nothing yet - I just peeked outside.  It's not supposed to start until around 3:00 or 4:00.... at least that's what they said last night.  I need to check the latest forecast to see what's up.  -But I do remember "them" saying it was supposed to start snowing down the DC area by now.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Channel 20 in DC would usually program comedies on the weekend:

Abbott & Costello - "Who's on first?"
Bob Hope & Bing Crosby
Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis

Otherwise, I would include the first group of Not Ready for Primetime Players on "Saturday Night Live", and on the semi-obscure side, Monteith & Rand.

Olympic broadcasting OOPS - Did anyone else hear Sylvia Poggioli say "Oh, s**t" on NPR right after 5pm EST yesterday?  She and one of the female All Things Considered hosts were chatting about the Opening Ceremony and, apparently, were cut off.
