I enjoyed Kismet last night.  I thought that Marin Mazzie definitely and fabulously captured the camp aspect of the show.  Danny Rutigliano was also fun as the Wazir.  Marcy Harriell and Danny Gurwin sang beautifully together, most enjoyable even though they played it straight.

And "The Snow Is Dancing" is one of the movements from Debussy's "Children's Corner Suite".

I'm up, I'm up.  I first awoke at seven-fifteen - it sounded like someone was knocking on the door, so I thought it was she of the Evil Eye.  I got up, but there was no one at the door.  It was surreal - outside it was completely foggy - I haven't seen fog in the Valley for twenty years.  Then I went back to bed, had some more weird dreams, then awoke at eight-fifteen.  No more fog, blue skies, and the singing bird has returned and was singing Losing My Mind, and a very good rendition it was.

Hmm...  Just checked a few of the updated forecasts... The snow is not due to come in until around 6:00pm... With the heavy stuff falling during the overnight hours.

The postman always rings twice.

DR Jose, thanks for the Target offer!

Hmmm...  The estimated snow totals for the New York City region are running anywhere from 4 to 12 inches.  The estimated snow totals for the DC area running from 6 to 14 inches.

Ain't meteorology fun?

DR Jose - Target and other shopping places around here get absolutely crazy when snow is predicted (even one flake!), so I hope you and TPunk don't get caught in an awful crowd.

Good morning!

COld, gray, rainy here: a perfect day to stay inside which I fully intend to do.

I'll have some hot chocolate later.

Read good and bad about KISMET at City Center. I love the score so much that I can't imagine folks not enjoying it unless the singers are awful, and from the line-up of performers listed, sounds like THAT'S not a problem.

I find that I play the film fairly often even though it's dully directed. I just adore the music.

And speaking of madness...

Just been catching up on some my reading, and came across this story in the New York Times:

In Small Town, 'Grease' Ignites a Culture War

Here are the opening paragraphs:

Quote
By DIANA JEAN SCHEMO
FULTON, Mo. — When Wendy DeVore, the drama teacher at Fulton High here, staged the musical "Grease," about high school students in the 1950's, she carefully changed the script to avoid causing offense in this small town.

She softened the language, substituting slang for profanity in places. Instead of smoking "weed," the teenagers duck out for a cigarette. She rated the production PG-13, advising parents it was not suitable for small children.

But a month after the performances in November, three letters arrived on the desk of Mark Enderle, Fulton's superintendent of schools. Although the letters did not say so, the three writers were members of a small group linked by e-mail, all members of the same congregation, Callaway Christian Church.

Each criticized the show, complaining that scenes of drinking, smoking and a couple kissing went too far, and glorified conduct that the community tries to discourage. One letter, from someone who had not seen the show but only heard about it, criticized "immoral behavior veiled behind the excuse of acting out a play."

Dr. Enderle watched a video of the play, ultimately agreeing that "Grease" was unsuitable for the high school, despite his having approved it beforehand, without looking at the script. Hoping to avoid similar complaints in the future, he decided to ban the scheduled spring play, "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller.

"That was me in my worst Joe McCarthy moment, to some," Dr. Enderle said.

Stories like this just make me shake my head...  I went to a Catholic High School, and we performed Grease, The Crucible, West Side Story...  Have things changed that much - and for the worse - in just 20 years?

And I have a fair number of things to watch on TV from the DVR today.

I don't intend to watch the Olympics much at all. If I read on-line that someone has done a memorable performance, then I'll tune in to the highlight on NBC-HD that night. Otherwise, I'm just not that much interested in the sports.

-And wasn't there plans for a pop-version of "What About Love?" with Alicia Keys and Patti Labelle?

???

In any case...

And since I've been a bit under the weather during part of this week, I got behind in my cleaning. I only this morning got the kitchen floor mopped.

One bad element of Kismet is this one dancing girl who is given a lot of the major dances and she is way too SKINNY. Not sultry at all to see a person't entire rib cage.

BK-
Do me a favor and ask Linda Purl when LEO AND LOREE is coming out on DVD.

In fact, when is the Purl/Donnie Most collection coming out? Features LEO AND LOREE, CRAZY MAMA and various HAPPY DAYS episodes.

That's my favorite comedy team by the way Purl & Most. They tried to revive some Bright and Early routines, with not much success.

FROM HELL IT CAME.

Goes in the category of entertainingly bad, to be sure. The tree monster with the knife in its heart is laughable. As are the condescending attitudes of the Americans towards the colorfully clothed natives. The leading lady is particuarly hateful and takes little responsibility for unleashing the killer tree. Then there's the sex-mad Aussie trading post owner-lady. Weird. Bad. Fun.
