The Canadian girl's outfit was lovely.  As for the stripper - well - I hope that outfit was an anomaly NOT a harbinger.

...And I'd want all the costume changes too.  Very hard to do on the ice.

:P

Well it would just have to be filmed as a 10 minute musical sequence with your clothes magically morphing from one outfit to another

I, for one, would pay good hard cold cash to see that !

What is it with these comments from (not just the skaters) - it doesn't matter if I win or whatever....I just want to do my best and really want to do it for myself....etc.

They are supposed to be representing US.  We didn't send them to the Olympics for therapy or to feel better about themselves.  They are supposed to be the best in our country at what they do....

I think that is the "PC" comment given to them I can't beleive any one of them doesn't want to win... I believe it is the equivalent of the Oscar nominees "Its an honor just to be niominated " speech

Good Afternoon!

My car was still there!

:)

Whew!

;)

The law is that no one can be parked within 15 feet of a fire hydrant in New York City.  So...  Does this mean 15 feet on each side of the fire hydrant?  Or 7-1/2 feet on each side of the fire hydrant for a total clearance of 15 feet?  I even walked around the block a bit just to gauge how close - and how far away - people were parking from the fire hydrants, but that little constitutional didn't help me.  There was a cop on the corner on neighborhood patrol, and I thought about asking him, but...  ;)

*However, while walking around the block, I found a couple of space that were no where near hydrants, so I ended up moving my car.  -Best of all, I won't have to move it again until Tuesday (that is if I don't move it again in the interim), and the car started up fine again this morning too.  Whew!

They are supposed to be representing US.  We didn't send them to the Olympics for therapy or to feel better about themselves.  They are supposed to be the best in our country at what they do....

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....also a bit perturbed at the the skater who dropped out of the 1500 to concentrate on his individual event.....WITHOUT telling the captain of the team.  I guess it is all about individual glory.

Actually, this is what is wrong about the Olympics...moreso now than ever.

The Olympics is NOT a nation-vs.-nation "competition"...it's a celebration of athletes...and it is meant to reward the best of the best...not for "national medal counts" but for the athletes who win them.

The U.S. fielded a team....we should be proud of them for their accomplishments and grateful for those who tried and failed.

Shizuka Arakawa will be honored for decades to come for her gold medal (Japan's ONLY medal of the games, thus far).

Our gold medalists will be on Wheaties boxes for a few months and then forgotten...their names will be trotted out in four years IF they return to compete...otherwise, they're yesterday's news.

Our media places unrealistic expectations on our athletes...none of whom is unbeatable or inhuman...all have weaknesses.

Someone posted here the other day that he is sick and tired of Bode Miller.

Well...don't blame Bode Miller.  He didn't do the commentary or write the words...in fact, he'd rather folks left him alone.  Blame the media and only the media for that...and also for the conceit that our national pride is somehow wounded if Sasha Cohen has to "settle for Silver" or that Johnny Weir's "wierdness" somehow kept him for winning a medal and, therefore, dishonored the USA.

It is NOT ABOUT US...it's about THEM...they are the ones who have trained all their lives -- at their own expense, not from government endowments in government facilities -- and we have no right to demand anything from them.

I have the utmost respect for the athletes...from all the nations...and I'm truly tired of the media trying to make us believe it's a country vs. country affair.

DOWN WITH MEDAL COUNTS -- the Cold War is OVER!

Well, I just double-checked the NYCDOT site again, and here is the exact wording:

Quote
It is illegal to park within 15 feet of either side of a fire hydrant. The painted curbs at hydrant locations do not indicate where you can park.

The first sentence makes sense to me - sort of.  -And I'm guessing that it's probably one of the least enforced regulations, at least according to what I saw when I walked around the block.  However, that second sentence about "do not indicate" is interestingly worded.  -Just like that sentence.  ;)

Well....DRRLP - they are traveling there under the aegis of the United States.  They are just people, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to compete and win.  They want to be the best.

And I think the Olympics is about national pride and wanting to compete.  It always has been.  And the first awards were leaves that died within a few days.

Athletes who use the Games as a platform for their own political statements or their own agendas are wrong.  Of course the media is responsible for a LOT of what is wrong with these games.

NBC is producing Olympic Idol - they just happened to choose the wrong contestants.

Well, then, by all means...let's hang them out in the public square and spit upon them for bringing "us" such shame and dishonor.

How dare "our" best be less better than "their" best.

DR MattH re: Becky from American Idol.

I highly doubt that Becky was voted off because of the pictures.  I can't imagine that most American Idol watchers/voters would have heard about this.  I know I had not heard anything.

After you wrote about it, I even searched on the AI message boards and did not see anything.  Then I looked under AI stories in the news and did find one mention.  It sounded like her and her sister did some modelling and were hired to do some suggestive poses (in bikinis).  That doesn't seem like much of a scandal to me, especially since it was years ago.

I still don't get why she got voted out.

My new favorite Olympic sport to watch is curling. With the Canadian women playing for bronze, and the Canadian men playing for gold it is quite exciting here!

I'm curious, how many medals was the US supposed (estimated) to win?

Every morning there is an Olympics section in the newspaper. And I noticed that the US only had 19 medals (Canada had 18 i think). I thought the US always got like triple the medals we got.

Der B and I will be heading out sometime this afternoon, taking doggy pics (something we haven't been able to do for a while, what with scheduling conflicts).  Fortunately, the weather is great, blue skies everywhere (well, not underfoot, that would be creepy...).

And I haven't a clue as to what I'll be fixing for dinner tonight.

And re: the Olympics, what was everyone's favorite medal winner so far (from the US and not).

For Canada I really liked Chandra Crawford winning the women's cross country sprint. That race was very exciting.

And also the women's long track speed skating, with canada getting gold and silver.  The winner of that race (cindy klassen) will probably be Canada's flag bearer. Since she has won 4 medals so far this Olympics (one gold, 2 silvers and a bronze), with one more race to go!

I am up, but not at work. :P I'm sick...pity me. ;)

No, that's not really necessary, but I am sick.  I don't know what happened, but I woke up with a soar throat (it sort of hurts to talk, swallow and cough) and I feel a little achy all over.

I have a lot of sick leave so I'm finally taking a sick day.  But I will need to go to Costco to get some Dimetapp.  And some kitty litter...not for my throat, but because I'm totally out, the litter box is almost empty and my indoor cat will need to go again.

We should all write letters to NBC with exactly this statement in it.  Of course their strategy probably was trying to get the viewers to stay for all four hours so they wouldn't miss anything and keep their viewership high for the whole time, but if that was their strategy it misfired.  All week I have been turning off the Olympics in favor of  DVDs or other programming because the insane bouncing from sport to sport was driving me nuts.

ALSO!! If this whole thing is on tape delay why oh why must we be subject to that awful "filler material" are they trying to convince us that we are watching it "live"?

They announced that they'd broadcast 24-and-a-half hours of Olympics stuff per 24-hour period (over the various NBC stations)!  They had to fill it with something, especially when Michelle Kwan backed out.  I would assume that they had a lot of stuff about her to broadcast...but then they couldn't use it. :-\

DR VIXMOM if you go to yahoo.com and click on Olympics, and then figure skating you can get several pages off photos.

DR RLP....that's not what I said.  If they do their best and they don't win, that's okay.  Not everyone can win, and being an Olympic athlete is a great accomplishment in itself.

But being in it for PERSONAL satisfaction is not the same thing.

I am all for the efforts they each make and what I think of them doesn't really matter much - but I can certainly have an opinion about their behavior.  I hope some of them do 'fade away' - and as for Bode Miller don't tell me he doesn't love all the attention.  He just didn't expect it to continue when he turned out to be a less than spectacular contender.
