The Lovely Wife is in sore need of good vibes today.  I can't go into detail, but she is having her first preview as Lady Bracknell in front of a live audience tonight.  Pray for Rosemary's Baby and send all the vibes you can.

Thanks.

Good Afternoon!

I decided to "escape" from the basement here.  Just needed a change of scene.  I like the basement, but just been spending too much time down there the past couple of days.  But, again, it has been nice "embracing" my "between gig" status.

I also needed some lunch. :)  I even got showered, shaved and dressed even though I don't have any real plans for today.

And my foot does feel better, but I'm not sure what the right course of action is right now: Do I try to keep any weight off it? or do I go ahead as "normal"?

I prefer to talk over the phone, you get things resolved faster and people don't get insulted by reading a "tone" into your email that was never intended.

On the other hand, I almost always follow up a phone converssation witha email cnfirmation of what was said so I can print it out and keep a written record. Who said law work wasn't redundant?

Question for Ask BK Day -

Do people here prefer to discuss business by email or phone?

Have your people call my people.

Here is the updated guest list for the "Convention" our family attends every Spring at a local university.

http://www.iconsf.org/guest.php

Anybody here that anybody knows?  Anybody who you many want to interview Mr. Barnum? Any writer or actor friends of our West coast or Kentucky contingents?

I won't bother asking our East coasters, I will simply assume that Jose knows all of them.   ;D

Seriously...

It all depends on the situation.  The one thing about e-mail and faxes is that you can see the "writing" in advance.  And then once all the fine print it reviewed, then any issues and negotiations can be taken care of in person, either face-to-face or over the phone.

However...  I don't like contract negotiations at all.  Talking money has never been comfortable for me.  Thankfully, with most union gigs, the scale/pay is already pre-determined by the union and the theatre/producer.  I don't have to negotiate anything - just pick up my check each Thurdsay.

In the cases where I've had to negotiate, I always prefer for "them" to give me a figure first rather than having them ask me for what I want.  I usually end up under-selling myself - at least that's what I've been told.  Heck, as long as it's over minimum wage...

I also get very uncomfortable when I'm dealing with actors who aren't yet established - i.e. they have day jobs.   Some people have seemed shocked that my rates are so reasonable.  My general rule of thumb is: If I know you can afford "it", then I will bill you accordingly.  Otherwise, I'm there to help you further your career not to empty your bank account.

And then there's the ultimate uncomfortable situation... Talking money with your parents.  :-\

DR Jose, I've been asked to recommend an MD for the summer high school workshop at the New York State Theatre Institute in Troy.  It's a four-week gig.  Any suggestions?

And when it comes to non-money related issues...

I've found I get the most satisfaction out of face-to-face meetings.  Yes, they may initially be the most uncomfortable situations, but, in the end, having the person right there in front of you is always the best.  Even if the conclusion is not a happy resolution.

DR elmore - I'll have to check my list.  I've already parceled out a bunch of my usual summer gigs, and I'm not sure I have anyone left who may be available.  But I'll see who might still be available.  Do you have the dates for the workshop?

Question for Ask BK and Ask DR Day....

Since I'm currently watching "Oprah", and she's showing clips from interviews of inter-racial couples in conjunction with the new movie, "Something New"... Who seem to be sharing some intimate details of their relationships...

Would you, could you ever go on a talk show and share the details of your personal life and relationships?  On national TV?

The UPS courier stopped in just before lunch.  He left on my desk "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (for which I got a notice of shipping last night) and "Fallen Angel" (for which I got a notice of shipping earlier yesterday).

Lunch today was at Milano's:

Orzo con salsiccia -- basil & chicken sausage with broccoli, red peppers, mushrooms, onions on a bed of orzo and dressed with extra virgin olive oil.

It was wonderful.

If Oprah would throw in a gratis remodel by Nate Berkus, I'd spill my guts.

Phone.  I have to call all over the country for my job and it's rare that I actually have an e-mail, but I'll always have a phone number on an invoice or statement. :)

Good afternoon!

I had a lovelier than lovely walk this afternoon and felt really good when I got back home. It's clouding over now, but the sun was out and there was quite a bit of blue sky when I was out earlier this afternoon before settling in with video entertainment.

Well, I believe Oprah is having a Spring Homemaker promotion coming up.  You might want to check Oprah's new home magazine - which has Nate Berkus on the cover.

Maybe you could kill the proverbial birds... And she might even throw in an all-expense paid weekend in Chicago.  -That Omni on Michigan Ave. is really nice!

Began the afternoon's viewing with a FIREFLY episode. I have now gotten to the part of the boxed set with episodes that either never aired or that I didn't get a chance to see before the show was taken off the air. Excellent episode.

This one also featured running commentary with stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyck, so after I watched the show, I replayed it to hear their comments. Hearing them loving their own show and co-stars so much was really great, and I can imagine how unhappy they must have been to break up their merry band so early when Fox pulled the plug on the show.

Next up was the forgettable JOEY. I'm sure the show won't be renewed for another season, so since I've come this far with it, I'll continue to watch, but it's SO obvious the writers are floundering at this point not knowing what direction to send the show. For a character I loved so much on FRIENDS, it's pretty depressing to see him in something so much less in quality than the former show.

That said, there was one running gag with an Joey action figure (the character Joey has just made a big action movie) that was reasonably funny. None of the plots worked last night at all, I didn't think.

SCRUBS had a pretty good episode featuring the usual mix of slapstick and pathos. No word yet whether NBC will pick this show up for another season, but on the basis of quality writing, it certainly deserves another season.

And I loved THE CLOSER this week as well. Maybe not quite as much as last week's episode (which I still will rank as my favorite of the run thus far), but the characters are all so interesting and the fellows in the squad room have pretty much come around to a respect for this Southern deputy chief. Now they can work much more as a team to solve these cases.
