Last night's "Medium":

I really, really, really (that's three -- count 'em 3 -- reallys!) enjoyed last night's episode.

What a treat to have an episode that perfectly blends the family with the mother's visions/job.  

Maria Lark as Bridget is possibly the most wonderful child actor I've ever seen in anything.  She's funny and precocious and totally natural.  The writing for this show was exceptional.  The ongoing "problems" with Bridget's classroom presentation about her mommy's job was hilarious...and that final scene in which Bridget had a dream...and then woke up with that amazing reaction on her face ("Oh, yeah!  THAT's what I'm gonna do!") that solved the dilemma for all concerned...AMAZING!

At various times during the show while Allison was dreaming and then learning that she was too late to save the first two girls, I had the feeling that the killer was tapping into Allison's dreams...but I should have listened to her narrative...that people in peril send out signals that attract others.  Not just Allison...but "others."

Wonderful episode!

Indeed, JRand, for many years there was a malt shoppe in the old Crown Point Court House called "Valentino's." I had many a sundae there. Houdini might have gotten married there too.

The town is also famous for letting Dillinger escape from the prison.

It's such a legitimate word, when used to invoke what the Phred Phelpses of the world do.  These are people who get an emotional rush out of hating, regardless of what destruction they do to others.

But when people use the word as a substitute for "dislike," which is something entirely different, I cringe.

I do believe there is such a thing as hate crime.  But I have met with too many politicians who are against hate crime legislation, because they make no distinction between the powerful emotion we call hate and the semantic poofery of snapping one's fingers twice and saying "hate it."

While getting down from soapbox, trips, falls flat on face, and says "I hate when that happens."  *sigh*

On this, the centenary of "the great San Francisco earthquake," The San Francisco Chronicle did a special today that includes the front page from its April 19, 1906 edition (actually a combined effort from three dailies...the Call, the Chronicle and the Examiner).

Online, there is a similar special edition that many of you may find interesting!

Shabby Chic is a rather overused term.

Also, it's much-abused and misapplied.

Too many people apply "shabby chic" to something is nothing but trash.

I think of something fine, but has seen better days, as being "shabby chic."  

Something that was cheap to begin with, and the only better do it will ever have is when it is recycled, should never be called "shabby chic."

For fun, do a "shabby chic" search on eBay and just look at some of the crap folks are trying to foist off as being worth buying (most of the pricey stuff fits the bill, but look at some of the final page listings)!

DR Ron, did you catch PBS's American Experience last night?  I was shocked by the things I learned about the earthquake.  I had always believed that the blowing up of buildings was a successful method used by the fire brigades that stemmed the spread of the fire.  In fact, there were roving bands of unskilled nincompoops who used the dynamite haphazardly, more often than not helping to spread the fire.  

I'm hoping that this show is repeated later this week so I can record it.
