Well, you've read the notes, the notes went to the Barber, and now it is time for you to post until the Barber cows come home.

And beautifully recorded.  The second symphony recording is distant and I have to now find one that isn't - I really like it.

If anyone is interested, I have duplicates of some of the classical titles I've been writing about, plus alternate performances, and I'm gonna put it all up on Amazon or eBay, but before I do, I can post a list here so you can have first crack, and believe me it will be much cheaper here - great prices for great stuff.

There are few potato dishes I don't like. Too bad potatoes don't like me -- or they like my blood sugar all too much.

That said, you can give me mashed potatoes (from simple to loaded with everything from bacon to truffle oil to blue cheese), pommes Anna, pommes au gratin, potato salad that's not sweet and, yes, McDonald's hash brown patties.

On Crete, when we went to the raki distilling party, they grilled slices of potato, which they brushed with olive oil and salted, then grilled on both sides. When the potatoes were grilled enough, they were drizzled with a little olive oil and lemon juice, plus extra salt.

I don't think you can put enough salt on potatoes. And it's true that if you oversalt a soup or stew (like I know what that means), throw in a whole peeled potato. It will absorb some of the excess salt.

DR John G, I have the following DVDs of The Tempest:
   The Tempest (Stratford Festival, Canada)
   The Tempest (BBC Shakespeare)
   The Tempest (Globe Theatre, London)
I have not watched the Globe or Stratford Festival yet, but I will get to them in my Shakespeare on DVD marathon.  Michael Hordern is the Prospero in the BBC Shakespeare and it's quite good.

I obviously lifted this heavy box out of my car the wrong way last night.  I felt it a few minutes later, and by morning I was on the hunt for a position in bed that would ease it.  No such luck.  I'm in the recliner now, and will just have to let it run its course.

I love Hordern.

I am enjoying reading about the composers and CD's in the notes this week....I do not have an educated musical palate.  So there are several things written about here by DR's and MR BK over the years that I have purchased and enjoyed....

It can't hurt to be musically curious.  I Am Curious Musical.  That's the name of my new off-Broadway revuew.

I like a good baked potato. I also love those small red baked parsley potatoes. Mashed are good too, but they have to be made with only russet potatoes. People try to get fancy these days and use Yukon gold or throw in a sweet potato, but those just ruin it. And of course any potato that's fried is wonderful (I'm partial to waffle fries), but they're very bad for you. I taught myself to make French fries in the oven with just some margarine and Lawry's season salt. They're not quite as yummy as fried, but if you're craving fries, it works.

I love good mashed potatoes with butter, milk and salt.  A real treat when we are out are garlic mashed potatoes.  I haven't seen them with green onions or scallions in a long time and I don't make them any more, just too fattening.

Keith's mother, and I later, made a baked mashed potato dish.  She added sour cream when mashing them and then baked them.

Locally we eat at Beaches if we want french fries.  I don't know what they season them with but they are excellent.  For sweet potato fries we go to Lapellah.  They also make about the best artichoke/spinach dip I have ever had.  It is served with fresh cooked

This morning I woke up and, as usual, picked up my tablet to read.  It did not go on and nothing I did worked, including plugging it in. Keith did an on line search.  One suggestion on how to fix the problem worked.  He held both the on button and the volume button for over 14 seconds.  Why that turned it on, or why it went off to begin with, we have no idea.  I am very grateful it worked.

At least I slept until 7:45 this morning.  Had I woken up during the early morning hours I would have been very frustrated without my book to read.

thanks for the reminder about the Julie Taymor Tempest, George. I never saw that.

Quite a few years ago, Theater Artists Olympia did a production of The Tempest, and my friend pug played Prospera.  The concept was that it was set in the Star Trek universe, so they had their uniforms and a sci-fi set.  It was a sight to behold...in a good way.  But I hadn't had much exposure to Shakespeare at that time, so the story itself went a bit over my head, at the time.

Last year, I ran sound for another (more traditional) version, and being able to see it multiple times really helped me to understand it all. :)

I've been home from physical therapy and market for over two hours, but my cable service - TV, internet, and phone - has been down until now.

I really love Gurjeet, my therapist.  Just as I still credit BK for giving my career a huge boost in 1994, I credit Gurjeet for saving my life in 2013 and getting me limber and walking upright again.  He's a wonderful therapist with a fine group of colleagues who seemed glad to see me.  He and I discussed my symptoms, and he believes, after several different exercises, that the problem is my left knee.  He believes the cartilage is worn out, that there may be arthritis problems, and the stress on my lower leg bone is causing all the problems of pain and mobility.  He suggested a knee X-ray and an orthopedist for a knee injection.  He also thought that I might need a new pair of sturdy shoes.

So, today I got a deep heat massage followed by an ultrasound massage, and then a really painful thigh massage to work out all the tightened muscles above my knee during which I thought I would scream from the pain.  I now have a couple of exercises to work on at home but at the moment every part of my left side is screaming in pain.

Sounds like Forbidden Planet, which is a favorite of mine. I even like the cheesy jukebox musical, Return to Forbidden Planet.

I remember an outdoor staging when I was in college that used Japanese cloths for the storm and some wonderful choreography to show the parties getting separated.

The most recent production of The Tempest I saw featured a black Prospero who was tall and imposing with magnificent dreadlocks. He had that magnetic gift that held the audience's attention. It was his curse, too, because he was ill prepared. He lost his way in every single soliloquy and he didn't seem able to hear the prompter.

I got good news. It's not as bad as I had feared. I am on the schedule for January, since it is not bothering me and the dentist is pretty booked with people who need to get their stuff done this calendar year.

Then to hell with all that mashed food!

Out Monday and Tuesday with a head cold that left me listless and flattened.  It developed over the weekend.

Yesterday and today at work -- lots to do.  Getting it done, too.  Don't quite know "how" it's getting done without any problems, but it is.

Still have a knot in my gut about the nation's future.

I was looking forward to Medicare and have gotten used to Social Security.

Yikes!  That's too bad.

I've spent the afternoon making chicken stew and orchestrating "Let's Not Talk About Love."  Because I got back so late, everything's about two hours behind schedule, so for dinner I'm having a chicken sandwich from the corner bodega.  I have more garlic and onion to chop, and that's my next project after my dinner.

Had a really fun and good work session with Kay and John.  I forgot how my paw prints are all over the arrangements - like ALL over them.  And today I adjusted three more so they work better.  It's going to be a really good album and the song choices are always surprising and great.

And the more Barber I listen to the more I realize he's one of the all-time greats and certainly in my pantheon of American composers.  If I have any Barber on the list, grab it!  If I don't, I may add a couple of things, just to share the wealth.

Listening to the wonderful piano concerto of Ruth Gipps.  I'm now her fan - everything I hear by her is great - if you go to You Tube you can hear a lot of her stuff - very little recorded, most are broadcasts.  Getting this CD with the piano concerto was the craziest experience.  It arrived a week ago and despite the packaging and label film being correct, the actual music on the CD was some post-modern avant garde crap by someone I've never heard of.  Sent back and ordered a copy directly from Amazon rather than a third party seller.  That came and same thing.  I then wrote the label expressing my dismay - they told me there'd been a bad batch and then offered to send me one for free.  I said okay, naturally.  Amazon refunded me, but the third party dealer checked their shelves and found a good copy, so they sent it.  When the extra gets here I'll offer it to whoever may want it.

Taking a break from Barberland and listening to some Ravel - his brilliant Valses Nobles et Sentimentales.  I had a different version uploaded that I really hated, but I found a great CD in the closet with Ravel classics on it from Sony Essential Classics - this has selections conducted by Ormandy in his prime and the always great Charles Munch, who conducted the Valses I'm listening to.  An amazing performance in an unbelievable and brilliantly recorded version - every orchestral detail is present and it's so alive and open - gorgeous.

My boss, who hired me and promoted me, announced today that he's being transferred to another department. I'm sure that it will be a good opportunity for growth for him, and he'll likely be replaced by someone within our department, all of whom I work well with and respect. But I just feel really sad. He's been the best boss I've had in my working career. I've learned a lot from him. I also enjoy his company. And his wife is fun.

Maybe it's that thing about not wanting what works to change. Lutherans just don't handle change very well.
