Well, you've read the notes, the notes were of the Christmas kind, and now it is time for you to post until the Christmas cows come home.

From yesterday:
I'm back from seeing "Rogue One" and having a late night appetizer at Applebee's.

How was the appetizer ....and the movie.

For the appetizer, I had the grilled chicken wonton tacos.  They were one of the happy hour half-price appetizers.  I'd never had them before but they were pretty good.

The original CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND was, indeed, a masterpiece.

The more Mr. Spielberg messed with the film, the less I enjoyed it.  Thank goodness, the original version of the film is still available.

I really like the chicken quesadillas, which is what I usually get.

I could've taken the day off, but I want to do the fiscal year roll-over and having so many people gone will make it easier to deal with it all.

Yes.  We normally get Christmas Eve day off, but since it's on Saturday (and I don't normally work on Saturday), I get to add 8 hours to my vacation accrual.

You must have a lot of leave time.

You must have a lot of leave time.

Not vacation time.  We can accrue up to 240 hours of vacation and I only have about 85 or so hours now.  We have no cap on sick leave, though.  I have over 1800 hours of sick leave.

Title: Re: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE CHRISTMAS KIND
Post by: George on December 23, 2016, 01:19:45 AM
And for the first time, we negotiated into our contract that one a year (I think it'll be in January), we can convert sick leave to vacation time at 3-to-1...so 3 hours/days of sick leave can become 1 hour/day of vacation.  We can't go under a certain amount, but I don't remember the specific amount.

No.  That's why this is significant.  It's technically better than the state who can cash in their sick leave at 25%, right?   This is essentially at 33%.

I had a blood pressure scare yesterday. The dental hygienist took a reading and it was scary high. The doctor's office got me in right away and I am on medication for it for the first time ever. I was afraid I was going to be sent to the ER, which I did not want at all.

I never liked the extra scenes like the ship in the desert because it was repetative going into the spaceship scene was unnecessary.

It also gave the suggestion that the alien that comes out at the end was Roy Neary transformed. Which I never even thought of when I saw the original version.

I am 99% sure I saw CLOSE ENCOUNTERS at Loew's Paramount (now El Capitan).  I like to leave that one percent for the times my memory inexplicably fails me on these things, but I'll be shocked, shocked, if BK or anyone says this one isn't right.

Last night. we started watching BARRICADE, which I'd recorded off of TCM.

It's a Western remake of THE SEA WOLF, but instead of taking place on the ocean, it's set in a remote mine of some sort.  Raymond Massey plays the Edward G. Robinson role, Dane Clark does the John Garfield part and Ruth Roman stands in for Ida Lupino.

It was really a terrible picture and we turned it off after about a half hour or so.  But, the Technicolor was gorgeous.

Back in the 1970s when I was writing my book on movie remakes, I interviewed the writer, William Sackhiem, and he said "To this very day, I have absolutely no idea why they called it BARRICADE."

Laura, you get together with people you love and celebrate the blessings you've received and the year's harvest. That's about it for the real celebration in Oaxaca. They supposedly parade into town with their prized radishes, but they don't eat them. I eat them. I made a radish salad this morning to take to a party. Just sliced diakon with salt and lime.

DR Laura, the doc decided I had high blood pressure at a pre-op exam (tiny surgical thing, just had a cyst removed).  He diagnosed me as suffering from White Coat Syndrome at the same time (totally true), but said the blood pressure should be lower anyway, so he started me on the medication.  That was eight years ago and it's totally in control and doing better than ever on one li'l pill per day.

DR JANE is enjoying the flora and fauna in Texas. Linked from BookFace, so if you're not a member, you may not see it.

Well, goddam!  The new tenant above me just had a flushing problem, and my bathroom is now flooded with water.  I've lost a lot of books to water damage and I can only hope we caught the problem before the ceiling falls in.

Oh my god!!!

Thank George.  It is very Christmasy.  My favorite photo of the trip, so from, is with my new cowboy hat.  I have always wanted a nice cowboy/cowgirl hat but they have always been too large for me.  I went back to the store 3 times before deciding to buy it.  I used to wear nice hats all the time.  Now I mostly wear caps.

Had bacon and eggs, did some stuff, and am now thankfully back home.  I'll go to the mail place around two.  This has not been my favorite day thus far.  Hoping that CHANGES.  Like now.

Oh, Elmore! I am so sorry to hear about the water problem. I hope it gets fixed with a minimum of hassle.

Our new super, Val, is really good, and he was on top of the leak.  After he stopped the flushing and flooding, he went into my bathroom with a ladder and pail and opened all of the bubble pockets of water in the ceiling to drain them. I've now washed the towels and rug in the bathroom, and it all seems to have dried okay.  He said he'd be back in a couple of days to see how the area was drying and to set any more repairs in motion. He and his wife are a lovely young couple from Albania, and we are very lucky to have him.  He was an English teacher in Albania and his English is wonderful.

I loved our late super Steve but he had a hard time with the English language.  Tomorrow I will go over to Holy Trinity Church and pray for his soul along with that of my family.

Richard and I went perilously close to Dayton Mall for me to pick up a book at a branch of my former employer.  We got into just the edges of the traffic and that was bad enough.  Had lunch at a deli we like in Springboro and now we're in until we have to leave for Lima early tomorrow afternoon.

Had the little work session, picked up one little package and came home.  The mail person was arriving and I saw he had a green envelope, which I willed him to be delivering to me, which he did.  The little green envelope is always from the Writer's Guild - the last one had a check for The Faculty royalties for nine dollars.  This one, while it isn't earth shattering, was a VERY pleasant out of nowhere surprise - very grateful to have a little extra unexpected cash at this time of year.

I am definitely ready for some downtime. Every year I promise myself some time around the holidays, but other things, i.e., LIFE, tends to intervene. The same is true this year. Although I'm putting next week mostly aside, there just won't be enough time to take care of all I need to do or want to do. Last year I was recovering from the eye surgeries, plus I had to catch up on taxes and some other things. At least I have those things behind me.

It's for my dance instructor. She loves it more than anything, so I have to make a few times a year for her. It has lemon and lime gelatin with heavy cream, mayo, cottage cheese, pineapple and pecans all in it. It actually tastes much better than a list of the ingredients makes it sound.

The Robby Award nominations have been announced.  I'm happy to say that L.A. Now and Then is up for four awards - best production of a musical, best director (me), best choreography (Cheryl Baxter), and best projection design (Tesshi Nakagawa and Vern Yonemura).  And three Kritzerland shows are up - the Sondheim, the Flaherty and Ahrens, and the Rodgers and Hart.

Spent the entire evening slicing and dicing and mincing, making two helpings of tuna pasta salad, and doing the last of the clean-up as I listened to music.

I had to go back to Gelson's but there wasn't anybody there shopping so I was in and out in three minutes - I needed more oil, mayo, and I bought another thing of rolls, just in case we ran out.  I also got three tiny drumettes for a snack.

I have spent many a year mincing, but it never resulted in tuna pasta salad.

I also need to get some whipped cream.  I won't get that at Costco, though.  I only need (and can really only use) one can and not a 4-pack, so I'll go to Fred Meyer, which is next door to Costco, here in Tumwater.

Be back later!

Fred Meyer had whipped cream, too, so I got most of what I need for tomorrow, except for some cheese.  I didn't realize that I needed some until I got home tonight, but I need to get gas tomorrow, so I can get some then.

You buy your cheese at the gas station?

But, of course!

;)

I have to go to the store first thing tomorrow morning.  Better 8:00 a.m. than noon.

Thank you very much.  I am crazy about this hat.  Avatar experts, would this work?  If so I will try to change it.

You could Jane, just crop it to the same ratio as 110x150 pixels.

For some reason, I am fighting back a wave of depression tonight.
