Vanity production or not, the film version of Lucky Stiff stinks. The director of the film and I did not get along at Goodspeed in 1998 on a production of Redhead, and I decided that he simply was inept with musicals. I ran into him a couple of years later when I saw a comedy he had directed quite nicely. He was much friendlier to me than I was to him, and I decided that we were simply a case of oil and water. Then I saw Come From Away, which he directed, and it was brilliantly staged. I also liked his direction of the movie Jeffrey.
So I kept watching Lucky Stiff, with all these annoying animation sequences during the songs, and I kept thinking, it's Redhead Redux!
