October 2, 2004:

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, today the person who owns the house I’m leasing is sending their handyman over to show me how the outdoor lights work (the timer) and hopefully show me the way in which the pool and spa lights work. That will be very nice, to get the outdoor lights automatic timing the way I want them – there’s only one of them that’s been working at all and that’s a light near my front gate. The porch light has never come on, nor have the lights in front of the garage. I also suspect there are lights in the front foliage. We shall see. Last night I had a lovely dinner with my pal Barbara Deutsch. We ate at an excellent restaurant called the Eclectic CafĂ©. Barbara had read Writer’s Block and we talked quite a bit about it. She’d ended up loving the book but it had taken her awhile to get into it. There was a simple reason for this: I’d neglected to tell her it was a mystery, and that is a key point in one’s frame of mind when reading the beginning of any mystery. Once she understood that, she totally got into the book but she said she would have been into it instantly had she known right from the beginning. She didn’t know what kind of story I was trying to tell without that knowledge. That is why I put the copy line on the cover (“Trying out a new musical can be murder”) – the other thing that her comments made me think about doing was changing the “A novel by” line to “A mystery by” although I don’t like that as much. But I think the copy line and the jacket flap copy makes it very clear what kind of book it is, and that’s probably enough. In any case, I was grateful she thought highly of it (she’s always very detailed about which bits she especially liked, which is very nice).

Yesterday, I finally picked up the Star Wars Trilogy box set and I’m looking forward to seeing these transfers very much. I also picked up the documentary Super Size Me, which I’ll watch soon. Today, after the handyman, I’ll be lunching with Tammy Minoff and discussing our potential coming back with What If early next year. And my Wiring Man is coming back to rewire two pieces of equipment that I’m moving around.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because soon I must hie myself to the Bank of Bur to see celebrities.

Aren’t these here notes informative today? I have learned so much from them already. And you know what they say – knowledge is power. I’ve also hear them say power is knowledge. I’ve even heard them say is knowledge power but I’ve never heard them say power knowledge is. Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Yes, Virginia, knowledge is power and I’m feeling very powerful right now from all the knowledge I have from reading these here informative notes. I am still plagued by this heinous (heinous, do you hear me) cough, but I’m hoping it will go away soon. Don’t forget, Donald will have a brand new radio show up tomorrow and don’t forget that our Unseemly Live Chat will be on Monday at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings Time. Don’t you feel powerful with all this knowledge? I personally feel so powerful that I may go out and knock down a truck driver.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must see celebrities, I must deal with a Handy Man and a Wiring Man, I must lunch with a Tammy Minoff person, and then I must relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What one thing that you know nothing or little about would you like to become well-versed in? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we continue our Octoberfest celebration.
