PITHY POSTS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, how it can already be Friday I have no idea, and yet, Friday it is. Just like that. First it was Monday and now it is Friday, and entire week since I attended the Ray Courts show. In any case, it’s Friday and I must write these here notes in a hurry because I must get my beauty sleep and be up very early to ready myself for today’s editing session at ten. I must not tarry nor must I dally. I must not sit here like so much fish writing sentences without point. Of course, if I stop writing sentences without point then the notes will be very short indeed. Speaking of very short indeed, I had quite the busy day yesterday, what with a two-hour session with Miss Linda Purl (very productive), what with typing up all my editing time code notes, and printing out everything I’ll need for the session, and writing three pages of the short story, and taking some telephonic calls. The day was here and then the day was gone, just like that. I then toddled off to the theater, where I picked up our new postcards and saw our new poster, which was very striking. The big theater was opening a show so there were lots of people at the El Portal, which frankly makes parking a terribly difficult thing. We had our smallest audience yet, about twenty people, but funnily they were very vocal, things got big laughs and they were with the play from start to finish. We had several set weirdnesses – the bathroom door had trouble “sticking” for some reason. Because the door needs to stay open and because it never would, we put Velcro on the sink and on the door, and it’s worked every time except for last night, although it finally did stick. I believe our stage manager put some new Velcro on it after the show. We also had a problem with the VCR on the set. The machine went wonky and kept clicking away and then would not eject the tape. Now, the tape is not really practical – there’s nothing really on it, but it has to eject because there’s a key bit of business with it at the end of the act. The actors were thrown by it, but got through that little section, and then Tammy was quite brilliant and at some point turned the power off on the VCR. Then Matt turned it back on and voila, it ejected the tape so we were, thank goodness, safe. From now on, we’ll have a backup tape hidden behind the VCR, just in case of an emergency. Live and learn. There was also something amiss with the rain curtain, which was making very loud dripping noises – kerplunk, kerplunk, the whole second act. But, for the most part it was an excellent show. And we had a surprise audience member – our very own dear reader Laura, who drove in from Arizona to see the show. I had no idea she was going to be there. I’ll let her post her thoughts on the show, but afterwards we went out and had pancakes at Du-Par’s. We laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed again. And then the evening was over. Just like that.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because these here notes are taking far too long to write and I must get my beauty sleep so that I don’t look like a 100 year-old gazelle.

Last night, I did manage to watch the first of the Barbra Streisand TV specials, My Name Is Barbra, on the new DVD set. I must say, it’s one of the great TV specials, and Miss Streisand was really something – that voice, and that face, and that materiel, and that staging. Really quite brilliant. It’s sometimes hard to remember just what a breath of fresh air Miss Streisand was, and just how unique she was right out of the gate. It’s also hard to remember how beautiful she was and how sexy she was and how funny she was. I don’t much care for her now and really cannot even watch her, but these early specials are truly wonderful, and breathtaking to watch and hear. The quality of the video is pretty terrific, too. I’ll be watching the others in short order.

Today I shall be editing all the livelong day, and then heading directly to the theater afterwards. However, I will have my handy-dandy laptop with me, so if they have wireless (which they should) I can probably stop by from time to time to make some pithy posts.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, make some pity posts, I must do some pithy editing, I must perhaps wear a pithy pith helmet, and I must attend the evening performance of the play. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, the British cast of Little Me, thanks to dear reader Ben. DVD, living room has the Barbra Streisand DVDs, bedroom has Silent Star, the original German/Russian film that was edited and dubbed and became First Spaceship on Venus. I’m enjoying it very much. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely pithy postings, shall we?
