THE NEEDLE AND THE NUMBNESS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am girding my loins for today’s visit to Dr. Chew. He will be putting the dreaded needle and Novocain in my mouth and preparing a back tooth for a crown. I do not like the dreaded needle but I shall do my best to behave like an adult. Once the dreaded needle is done, then the rest of it is not so bad. I’m sure I’ll be numb for hours, just like the last time. In preparation for the dentist, I spent a wonderfully relaxing Sunday wonderfully relaxing. I woke up thinking it was around nine or so but it turned out to be almost eleven, which means I must have really needed the sleep, and, of course, the oafs were not working yesterday, so there was blessed silence. Then my friend, Mr. Nick Redman, came over and we went to Jerry’s Deli and had some lunch and laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more we laughed again. We talked of many things, but not of cabbages and kings. We talked of insensitive people, we talked of soundtracks, and we talked of his upcoming projects (some amazing ones) and my upcoming CD projects (some amazing ones). After that, I came home, wrote the blurb for the new release, which I’ll give you dear readers the advance word on, probably this evening, and that was all the work I intended to do and I did no more. I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched four more episodes of Mad Men. I’m told that while the show is a huge critical hit, that not a lot of people tune in. I’d guess it’s because the characters so far are really not that likeable, and it’s hard to connect to them. That said, the writing is pretty good, the directing is classy, and considering their spending two-and-a-half million dollars per episode, the show looks good. I have no idea how AMC can afford to spend such an amount, especially in light of viewership not being great, but spend it they do on a forty-seven minute show. The actors are all fine, and I especially like the gal who plays the lead’s secretary, and I like the gal who plays the lead’s wife. It’s obvious that the creator of the show is a Broadway fan, since we’ve already had appearances by John Cullum, Robert Morse, and, of course, Bryan Batt, who’s a regular. Even though it’s completely accurate, history-wise, I find the constant drinking and smoking repellent – in fact, just as repellent as I found it when I was growing up. The show on Blu-Ray looks spectacular.
After that, I decided to watch a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Blue Thunder, starring Mr. Roy Scheider, Mr. Malcolm McDowell, and Mr. Daniel Stern. I enjoyed it very much when I first saw it back in 1982, and I actually enjoyed it better this time around, which is only the third time seeing it. The script is tight, and John Badham really directs these sorts of things as well as anyone. The score by Arthur B. Rubinstein would be a lot better if it didn’t have all the cheesy synths, but I like it quite a lot. The film is expertly paced, and the cast all turn in excellent performances, including a perky one from my pal Candy Clark. The Blu-Ray looks and sounds stupendous – a great transfer from Columbia.

After that, I answered some e-mails, sent some e-mails, and then it was time to write these here notes whilst eating some dried cranberries.

Today I shall be visiting Dr. Chew, then I’ll be going to the tape transfer place to check out the latest batch of tapes for our potential upcoming releases. That’s always very enjoyable and will hopefully offset whatever pain and/or numbness I’m feeling. I also have a few more packages to ship, as all the dealers finally paid. After all that, I’ll come home and eat something soft, as I’ll have to do for the next week or so until the permanent crown is put on. I may or may not then go to the Alex to see one of those concert versions of musicals.

Tomorrow I have a two-hour casting session, and then I have a lot of work to do at home – I have to put all the changes into the Nudie script and get that to several people. Wednesday, I have some meetings and a lot of errands and whatnot, plus the official announcement of our new title, and then Thursday or Friday, can’t remember which, I have to be at a recording session for the demo of the long musical. I’ll also be hearing the Brent mixes as they are done, but we also have to do a half-day of vocal comping, which I know will happen later this week or possibly early next week.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the tango, for today is the birthday of our very own beloved DAW (formerly singdaw). So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own beloved DAW (formerly singdaw). On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN BELOVED DAW (FORMERLY SINGDAW)!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, try to do some sort of jog, visit Dr. Chew, listen to tapes, ship packages, and eat something amusing. Today’s topic of discussion: As you know, I had a blast being back in the studio recording again – so, if you had your druthers, who would get your vote for me to do a solo album with, and if you could get me back in the studio with one of my concept albums, what would it be? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I prepare for the needle and the numbness. The Needle and the Numbness – that’s the title of my next novel.
