October 9, 2009:

MAKE IT ANOTHER OLD-FASHIONED, PLEASE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I sometimes wish I had an automatic notes writing machine so that I could just push a button and voila – notes. But alas and alack and alack and alas I do not have such a machine and therefore I must write these here notes the old-fashioned way, buy pushing buttons on a keyboard, which then make words on my screen and the words form sentences and the sentences form paragraphs and then voila – notes. So, here I sit, writing notes the old-fashioned way. If I’m writing notes the old-fashioned way shouldn’t I be wearing a straw boater and spats? Shouldn’t I be sipping a Nehi Orange Soda and sucking on a Charm’s sucker? Shouldn’t I be smoking a pipe (epip, spelled backwards)? Shouldn’t I go brush my teeth with Dr. Lyon’s Tooth Powder? Shouldn’t I make myself an old-fashioned? What the HELL am I talking about? Shouldn’t I be writing some notes the old-fashioned way right about now? Shouldn’t I be saying that I was awakened at eight-thirty in the morning by the ringing of a telephonic device? The early telephone calls are really going to have to stop – I don’t answer them, but once I’m up, I’m up and I did not want to be up at eight-thirty in the morning. CDs arrived at nine-fifteen in the morning. I then spent the next ninety minutes putting CDs into packages, and there were a lot of packages. I then drove all of it over to the postal office and dropped them off on the loading dock. I then came home and put postage on the packages that were getting multiple CDs and then I put the CDs in those packages. I also put all the CDs in the overseas packages and left those for Mr. Cason Murphy to do. All that took a couple of hours, and then I had some errands and whatnot to do, which I did. Then Cason came over, did the overseas packages, and off we went to the post office, where we dropped off those and some big dealer packages. We then went to the Studio CafĂ© and split some wings, and I had a pulled pork sandwich that was very disappointing, and a little teeny-tiny salad and we split a small order of fries. After that, I had to write and send a little eBlast for LACCTAA, and by the time all that was through, it was already seven. I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Big Trouble In Little China, a film by John Carpenter, starring Kurt Russell. This film is beloved by everyone who saw it when they were children or teens, which is typical – no matter that it was a huge box-office disaster and received very poor reviews. Nope, like other 80s films that have these love-fests on the imdb, if they saw it as a kid then it’s one of the greatest movies ever made. It’s pretty clear why the film flopped – its plotting is hard to follow and is basically a tongue in cheek “homage” to Chinese action movies – in that regard, it was actually ahead of its time. It’s heavy on the self-deprecation, fantasy, and the flying through the air martial arts fights – the latter are very well done. It’s all pretty silly, but Mr. Russell is having a good time, as is Mr. Carpenter, and it all goes by pretty quickly. The Blu-Ray is fine – I’m sure the film looked like this back then – it’s got that typical 80s look to it. So, at times it’s very sharp and at times it’s a little soft. The sound is nice and punchy.

I feel these here notes, which are being written the old-fashioned way, are not nearly old-fashioned enough. Perhaps if I sing an old-fashioned love song, comin’ down in three-part harmony – maybe that would help. Maybe not. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst I step up to the bar and say, “Make it another old-fashioned, please.”

Today I must be up bright and early and also early and bright to do the final mix on Brent Barrett’s album. I’m hoping this will not take more than three or four hours. I’ve heard the rough mixes, which are all very good for the most part, so I merely have to tweak and make sure I’m jiggy with everything. Then we’ll send it to Brent – if he has any little quibbles we’ll do those fixes early next week and then that will be that. I’m actually hoping to announce Brent’s CD concurrent with our next soundtrack release. It will be Christmas in October.

After that, I’ll get something to eat, and then I really must write the liner notes for our new release – I have a little research to do on the second film involved, so that will take a little time. Otherwise, I’m hoping I can get some relaxing in. If not, I have all day Saturday and Sunday to do so, as I have no plans at all other than finishing the liner notes, and starting the liner notes for our Holy Grail release. I’ve got a fairly busy week next week, so I really do hope I can spend a restful weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finesse some mixes, I must do some errands and whatnot, I must eat something amusing but not too heavy, and I must try to relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, various and sundried upcoming Kritzerland projects. DVD, a French motion picture from France entitled Rider On The Rain, and then the Blu-Ray of A Hard Day’s Night. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and make it another old-fashioned, please.
