NEW YORK ADVENTURE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have survived day one of rehearsals – barely. Tomorrow will tell the tale, really – if I awaken and am fine, I think everything will be dandy. If not, I may consider seeing Dr. Kohn for a little help tomorrow. I feel good, certainly, but my voice is not used to singing this much in so concentrated a time. I was very hoarse by the end of the rehearsal, but I’ve got all day today to rest and relax and hopefully we’ve been through the roughest part of singing stuff over and over again. The creative team couldn’t be nicer or more supportive, though, and I’m having a good time. FJL was even thoughtful enough to have a Diet Snapple for me. I got a reasonable night’s sleep the night before and hopefully that will be the case tonight. I’d still like to find some jogging shoes for jogging, but yesterday’s hunt revealed no store with a size ten running shoe unless said shoe cost over $100. I did walk a lot yesterday, so that was good. I also had a lovelier than lovely meal at Joe Allen and I’m certain I’ll be dining there again, perhaps even this very evening. Meanwhile, I’m trying to keep up with developments back home – answering e-mail questions from The Brain creative team, and stuff like that there. But, I am enjoying my New York Adventure.

I’ve got a bunch of people to call, but I probably won’t get to that until I see how my voice is faring later today. After I got home from dinner, I must say I was flipping around the TV dial and came upon a how entitled Conversations with Michael Eisner on CNBC. If this is where that sorry cable network has devolved then they should just go away quietly into the good night. I mean, honestly – Conversations with MICHAEL EISNER! And, as you might expect, he is completely inept as a person hosting conversations.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must shortly hit Ye Olde Bed because frankly I am all in.

I was happy to see that our friend Mr. Harry Groener is now playing the lead in Spamalot. And our very own Miss Michele Pawk is in a play at the Roundabout. Have I mentioned that my hotel is next door to the theater where Sweeney Todd just closed its run?

Before I left LA, I did manage to bank a couple of DVD thoughts. I finally got around to watching Paths of Glory, which I’ve had on my shelves for years. What a fine motion picture Paths of Glory is. It is masterfully directed by a young Stanley Kubrick, and the screenplay by Jim Thompson and others is just great. And the actors – Kirk Douglas is terrific, Timothy Carey is totally unique, Joe Terkel and Ralph Meeker are both wonderful, but the two performances that always put me away are George MacReady and Adolphe Menjou. The movie still packs an incredible wallop after all these years – and unlike his later films, this is one of Kubrick’s tightest – a mere eighty-eight minutes, without a frame wasted.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, rest my voice, I must try to find jogging shoes for jogging – if I’m successful I shall jog immediately, I must answer e-mails and I must attend a rehearsal and then have a nice meal. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could give your very own Academy Awards for ten movies that you consider absolute perfection in every way, what would said motion pictures be? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I continue my New York Adventure.
