NOBODY'S ON BOARD WITH L.A. WI-FI)
Wireless carriers shun Metro and city connections
By Sue Doyle Staff Writer
Article Launched: 04/27/2008 10:19:29 PM PDT
While Los Angeles might be the nation's second-largest city and sit just a few hundred miles from one of the world's leading high-tech hubs, city efforts to tap into the booming Wi-Fi trend are being snubbed.
Tennessee bus riders can access free wireless Internet while zipping past old battlefield sites in Chattanooga. A pay-to-use Wi-Fi system is being installed for riders on a 35-mile rail roaring past tumbleweeds and cactus from Fort Worth to Dallas.
And in San Francisco, a private company is rolling out a wireless technology to let commuters on Market Street soar through cyberspace on any wireless carrier.
But a year after proudly touting plans to study installing Wi-Fi on the Orange Line that runs through the San Fernando Valley, Metro officials have quietly dropped the effort after a call for providers came up empty.
"They came back and said the ridership, demographics and length of trip did not suit their needs," Metro spokesman Rick Jager said.
Meanwhile, while Metro had said it also wanted to see about installing Wi-Fi for its subways, it hasn't sent out any requests for proposals.

LA TIMES (http://travel.latimes.com/articles/la-tr-seattle27apr27)
In Seattle, it's all about authentic dining
In the Emerald City's neighborhood bistros, honest, authentic cooking is the star attraction. Here, it's all about the food.
SITKA & SPRUCE
Sitka & Spruce, set in an unpromising strip mall between a kebab place and a Subway sandwich shop, is even smaller than Hollywood's hole-in-the-wall wine bar Lou. It doesn't take reservations unless there are five or more in your party and you can fit at the communal table.
Propped on the bar, a child's chalkboard is scrawled with the words "Food worth standing up for." And stand up they do. People lean against the bar and the big chalkboard where the menu is written each day, waiting for one of the half-dozen tables.
Matt Dillon, the chef and owner, all of 34, in a tweed cap and cartoon tattoos, ambles between the kitchen and the dining room.
My friends and I start with Stellar Bay oysters with a pink grapefruit and Campari granita, its bittersweet bite delicious with the oysters. That's followed by a beguiling salad of warm beets and wild watercress and an order of grilled oyster mushrooms with shallots, freshly cracked walnuts and wood violets. Chicken livers sautéed with sultana raisins and a splash of rosé are wonderful and earthy. I love the fat white beans heaped with charred octopus tentacles in a bright green salsa verde too.
Most dishes come in regular and half portions, the better to taste one's way through the menu. Sometimes, there's quail or poussin al mattone with creamed celery root and leeks, hangar steak topped with a poached duck egg, or shredded braised beef shank, fried and presented with yeasty homemade lavash, and wilted radicchio.
Yum - octopus tentacles for Jane!

DR singdaw - Did Mr. Florez encore those high-Cs during the taping/telecast of "Le Fille du Regiment"?
-
DR JoseSPiano - No!! There was quite an uproar after the aria, but for whatever reason, he did not encore it.
When Renee Fleming interviewed him at intermission, he mentioned that he felt the aria coming later in the work was even more difficult - longer lines, more pianissimo, and an [interpolated] sustained high D flat. And he did it beautifully, I might add!
-
Hmm... Well, there's an WSC a few miles from here. However, with the rain-affected rush hour traffic, it would take me at least a half hour to get there, so I think I shall go a little later today.
-
He also mentioned that on days when he is singing the role, he tries one high "C" in his dressing room to make sure that he has it, but otherwise doesn't go near it. Otherwise, he said, you can "pysch yourself out."
-

Hmm... I wonder if he was under some pressure to not encore the aria since he was singing at a matinee, and they wanted to make sure to come down on time in order to get the changeover done. -Or maybe he only encores after 8:00pm? ;)

Good Afternoon!
I'm back from Jiffy Lube - My brother asked me take his car in for a long overdue oil change, and since he's letting me use his spare car while I'm here, I figured it was the least I could do. Well, once I got to Jiffy Lube, I was swiftly informed that it had been over 19,000 miles since the last oil change. Of course, they had some other "highly suggested" work that should be done, so I went ahead and called my brother so that he could talk and haggle with the "team leader". He did opt for some of the extras, but decided to take care of some of the work himself - mainly replacing some of the filters (very easily done). Thankfully, the extra work didn't take too long, and I was in and out of there in about 25 minutes. -And at least it got me out of the house this morning for a bit. ;)

-Then it was off to find where the nearest Whole Foods was since my brother's fridge is quite bare. And after all the "birthday food" from yesterday, I need to eat a bit more healthy and fresher today.
I was hoping to find some of the pre-packaged, cook-at-home meals that I find in NYC, but since this Whole Foods is one of the new HUGE ones with all the food stations - this one even has separate Fish and BBQ/smoked meats(!) counters - they don't carry those meals. However, I did pick up some sushi, salads, and some salmon for later.

Hmm.. Not really. Although, the weight loss wasn't that visible to me - at least from the outside. I have gained back some water weight - which was expected - but I'm still in the "minus" column overall. No complaints.

How many pairs of your nifty new eyeglasses did you take with you?

Like DR MattH, i was not too thrilled with the idea of unmaking Rebecca a Walker. However i'm not as annoyed about the idea as i was last week. I actually thought that they were doing it to create a new family for her. But now is seems clear that they are doing it because of the great chemistry between rebecca and her "brother".
I'm a bit more okay with doing it for that reason (even though it's sort of weird).
I thought that rob lowe turning down the VP job was kind of interesting too. Although i can't see how the public could vote for that other guy (so unappealing and sleazy). Over the dreamy and wonderful rob lowe!

Yesterday was a strange day. but I now have a brand new dishy washer. don't ask me how to use it. This one isn't so obvious. I shall have to read the manual. Apparently the lights stay on even when it's off, which makes me think it's running when it's not. Oy.

Oh DR RLP, I remember Hardy from BB2..oh yes I do!
And I am very pleased that BB10 will air this summer...although I do hope for more older contestants this time around, like they used to have.

Ok, I'm now caught up.
And aren't you sorry! :)

BK often speaks of annoying errands. I had an annoying thing to take care of, which I'd been avoiding. Said chore is now done. the dread is worse than the doing.
-
Did anyone mention Harry Hay? I believe someone mentioned him on HHW the other day?

The lights on probably mean the dishes are clean. After you open it (and leave it open a couple minutes) they will probably go off.

I think you're first today!
I threw his name out there a few days ago in reference to something or other, inspired by an episode of "Queer as Folk" in which Michael and Emmett participate in a "faerie gathering", an event started by Hay. In the episode, Emmett has a "philosophical" encounter with Hay...and then learns Hay had died two years earlier.

Let's hope for something better than this last edition that ended last night.
It always kills me at how "entitled" the jurors believe they were...so spiteful, and not a one of them innocent of doing exactly what the finalists did in their game play.
Were I to find myself in a final two position and someone like Sheila demanded to know what I thought I deserved to be there instead of her, I'd have said: "If you were meant to be here, you'd be here."
-
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

More on "How the West Was Won" on DVD (remastered):
From Warner Home Video:
HOW THE WEST WAS WON
The wondrous western historical saga How the West Was Won gallops onto home theatre screens August 26th in three new restored and remastered editions.
One of only two narrative feature films produced in the original Cinerama three-panel widescreen process, How the West Was Won is a stunning epic, following four generations of a courageous New England farm family as they travel to the fertile Ohio Valley during America's early westward expansion.
M-G-M and Cinerama, Inc. spared no expense to give this sprawling Western saga the huge vistas made possible with the original Cinerama process. After its initial theatrical engagements in theaters equipped with three synchronized projectors for Cinerama presentation, the film was subsequently presented on traditional theater screens with the three separate Cinerama panels being optically joined to form a standard 35mm 2.35:1 widescreen image, leaving most subsequent viewers puzzled by the annoying 'join lines.'
Following several years of careful development, the technicians at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging perfected a technology that could finally eliminate the 'join lines,' and unify the images into a superb viewing experience that captures the essence of the production's initial road show exhibitions, with an aspect ratio of 2.89:1.
This ultimate western film gets the Ultimate treatment with How the West Was Won Ultimate Collector's Edition ($59.92 SRP). The two disc Standard Definition Ultimate Collector's Edition is loaded with collectible memorabilia including a 20-page theatrical press book reproduction, 10
behind-the-scenes photo cards and 10 postcards, and an exclusive movie poster offer. Streeting simultaneously will also be a glorious Blu-ray Hi-Def ($34.99 SRP) version. Exclusive to Blu-ray is the "SmileBox" version of the film which presents the image with a unique curvature that virtually recreates the true Cinerama experience in a home theater. This Blu-ray Hi-Def Edition comes with a special Digi-book packaging featuring 32-pages of rare press materials and behind-the-scenes photos. The third new edition is a Two Disc-Special Edition in standard definition ($20.97 SRP).
Some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including John Wayne, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Richard Widmark, Gregory Peck, Lee J. Cobb, Debbie Reynolds and Carroll Baker star in How the West Was Won. Set between 1839 and 1889 against the backgrounds of the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, buffalo hunters, the Pony Express and the first transcontinental railroad, the film consists of five segments, with direction by Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall, and written by James R. Webb and John Gay, suggested by a Life Magazine series of the same name. The film was the winner of 3 Academy Awards (Best Screenplay, Best Sound and Best Editing) as well as being nominated for an additional five Oscars?, including Best Picture. In 1997, How the West Was Won was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the US National Film Registry.
How the West Was Won Special Features:
a. Film Historian Commentary
b. Dave Strohmaier's critically-acclaimed, feature-length documentary Cinerama? Adventure
c. The Making of How the West Was Won (Archival featurette)
d. Original Theatrical trailer

Good Afternoon!
I'm back from the gym. -Alas, no fitting, but, I keep going to the gym so that my clothes will fit better.
-And just like my local location in NYC, this location was s-l-o-w this afternoon.
I had passed this location many times, but had never been inside it. I had always thought it was two floors, but it turned out that entrance/reception area was on the first floor, but the rest of the gym was on the second floor. -The rest of the first floor space is taken up by an Office Depot store. In any case, I had a great workout - elliptical, rowing machine, ab circuit and stretching. :)
-
I spent the afternoon watching Louis Malle's luxurious THE LOVERS. Gorgeous widescreen black and white photography and a very sensual story. I'm sure it caused a scandal back in the late 1950s, but it's tame enough now to garner a G rating.
-
You be right! I confused it with Matt's Hoppity Hooper.

The film is only 90 minutes, so I was able to start on the bonus features, too (though this is one of the "budget" Criterion DVDs so there are fewer bonus features). There are two interviews with Louis Malle - one in 1963 and one the year before his death. Both interesting views of the film which, despite its huge acclaim, was not a favorite of his.
-
Next will come two interviews with Jeanne Moreau, one from 1958 and one from 1972. I haven't started the first one yet. Don't know how long either will be.

For the "single" taxpayer, the max "economic stimulus" return would be, I think, $600.
If your check is for much more than that, it's undoubtedly a "refund" check however it came to pass!*
* An exception to this would be if you filed a claim as single head of household with qualifying children. That is, if you claimed MBarnum as a dependent in your household, your check might be a bit more. ;D

From the first season of Bewitched when Paul Lynde guest starred as the guy who tried to teach Samantha how to drive. This was before his appearance as Uncle Arthur

Ya, the jurors really were a bitter bunch...except Natalie and Matt, they at least seemed to realize it was just a game and you do what you have to do (within the rules) to win.
Chelsea and Joshuaha were pitiful.
And why does CBS act as though Neil (the one who left after a just a few days) was never even in the show?

So... Just been watching the news... The kids from "The Hills" and The Jonas Brothers attended the White House Correspondents Dinner this past weekend... And now it looks like Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana may have "ruined" her career with the just published photo spread in Vanity Fair (which was taken by famed photographer, Annie Liebowitz, and also featured pics of her with her father)... And two kids in Maryland who beat up a woman on a bus, breaking her face in two places, are now sueing the bus company and school system for being banned from riding the bus which in turn has prevented them from attending school - from which they were expelled - for $10,000,000!?!?!?
Oh... And, remember, postal rates are going up again in two weeks. Time to stock up on those "Forever Stamps".

To me the photo doesn't seem right, she is just way too young. I wonder what her parent's are thinking now. After all they were there & were caught up in the whole thing. I
I would like to see Disney use this to teach a lesson, I seriously doubt it will harm her career.

But Barrowman himself? He looks, well, waxed. He needs some hair on his pecs.

A couple weeks ago, I interviewed for a part-time position in the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Manhattan Beach's Parks & Recreation Department. (Say that 5 times fast!) A week later, the woman who interviewed me... her name's Megumi (*grin*) called my reference & it apparently went well. Today she called me back and offered me the job. She's sending my paperwork back to personnel for the official OK & will let me know when I can start. This is so perfect for me. Not only the arts aspect, but that I could take another part-time job or continue taking classes. And it's close enough that I could walk to work, weather permitting. *squee*

Gee, I have one of the original books from the Cinerama showing of HOW THE WEST WAS WON. Maybe I should try to sell it on e-bay when the DVD comes out.

Did they have a reservoir?

Congratulations on the new job, Singingnymph!!!

How wonderful, I'm so happy for you!!! CONGRATS!
-
I had a nice surprise at the Men's Chorus rehearsal; the former accompanist, who left the Chorus a couple of years ago, has become a transgendered Manhattan celebrity, Our Lady J! Jonnah came to rehearsal tonight because the Chorus is doing a beautiful and moving composition she's written. We hadn't seen each other in at least two years and had a great reunion. I said to her, "You've gone from a really nelly man to an absolutely beautiful lady." It was so good to see her and to hear the Chorus rehearse her glorous writing.
As we left, she gave me a copy of her demo CD and I cannot wait to hear it tomorrow morning.
-
DR Sandra, as tempting as the prize it-sorry. Will you ever tell us what the project is?

You made him a legend.

It is shocking what a difficult time Bryan is having getting an on-site estimate from a moving company. They all seem to want to do it by phone.
Question number 1 “how many rooms do you have”. He lives in a one room loft.
Next they begin to figure in appliances-he isn’t taking any.
JMK or MBarnum, do you know anyone who has moved cross country & can recommend a good moving company?
His boxes should arrive tomorrow and he can begin packing. Sure hope nothing happens between now and closing, the place is no longer fit to show.

Jane, I moved from Arizona to Iowa, but it was a long time ago and I was fortunate enough to be moving North in January, which meant they had empty trucks from moving people south and had good discounts. I think I had NorthAmerican Van Lines. They were very good, but that was 1992

Congrats, DR SingingNymph!

Boyd Gaines was nominated for Oustanding Featured Actor in a Musical. Isn't that a little strange?
Why is that a little strange? Were you hoping he'd be put in the Leading Actor in a Musical category for his work as Herbie in Gypsy?
-
DR Jane - Sometimes those "by phone" estimates can work in the mover's favor. I remember when Steve moved a couple of years ago, he was moving from one apartment to his new condo. They based his rate on the number of rooms he had in his old place. Of course, what they didn't count on was the fact that he quite the library of books, sheet music and recordings. The moving company honored their estimate, but even one of the guys on the crew said they probably would have charged him more had they done a in-person, on-site estimate. -I think on-site estimates are truly the exception now rather than the rule.
-
DR Jane - Where is Bryan moving from and to again?
-

Banks get them every once in a while. I buy up as many as I can. I usually get them one or two at a time.

When der B and I moved cross country, we didn't really use a moving company.
Instead, we packed everything into the trailer, which was then driven for us cross country by a company that does that kind of stuff, and when they dropped off our trailer, we unloaded it again.
Turned out, this was much cheaper than a "moving company" would have been.
-
Cilla, our best experiences were with NorthAmerican. We also learned all offices are not created equal so it is best to find out which moving companies rate best in your own area-a very difficult task indeed. When it comes to placing claims on damaged or lost goods, all moving companies that I dealt with made it very difficult.

SWW, interesting concept. Will that work if you need the contents stored for two or more months?
-
SWW, either you need to fix that post or we need to get to the next page to fix this widescreen, cinerama or whatever you call it

Tomorrow is the Vixter's 15th birthday... she has long been asking to join our group so I have set her up with a avatar and will let her know about it tomorrow.... she will be monitered.... oh she will be monitored!

Woody broke the board
-
It is definitely broken. No question about that. My computer had a hard time loading the page.
DR TCB, the role of Herbie has historically been a featured role. Jack Klugman and John Dossett both were nominated for Tonys as featured actors for GYPSY.
-
Yup. Woody broke the board
-
Maybe if those of us who can post can get us to the next page it will be better

I finished watching the bonus features on THE LOVERS DVD set. Not really much extra value on this Criterion, but this is a "budget release," $10 less than their usual suggested retail price.

Next I watched another PSYCH episode. This was the one where Shawn and Gus investigate the world of speed dating. Funny episode and a good mystery.

I don't think I can hang in there long enough to get to the next page

ok, I'll do this for 6 more posts and then I'm giving up
-
SWW, interesting concept to reduce the moving costs. Will that work if you need the contents stored for two or more months? Do you have more info I can share with Bryan?
-
Looks like it will be cool with chances of rain in NYC later this week. I will pack a jacket and an umbrella
-
DR Jose, that kind of estimate would have worked for us
Bryan is in the process of reducing the volume and weight of his belongings. He would like at least one on site estimate.
He did an on-line estimate-big mistake as now every broker around is calling him, even at 7:00 AM on a Saturday. The on-line estimate included a $600 + fee to guarantee the price.
Bryan is moving from Portland, most likely to North Chicago
-
Hi Jane! You got on to post. It's an interesting experience tonight
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR VIXTER!!!

-
Ok, will this one get us to a new page or am I counting wrong
-
I DID IT!!! :D
-
Woo Hoo! The board is back in working order Yeah Jane!
-
Cilla, thanks for the email. I had no idea what had happened & never saw SWW's post.
-
Now I wonder if everyone has given up
-
It is working faster, I didn't know if moving along would make a difference.
'night for real.
-
No problem, DR Jane, glad you showed up to help push to page 17
-
Night Jane
-
Today is VIXTER'S B'Day? HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIXTER!!
-
Well, my work is done here....time to get some sleep. I have a pretty light week, but have some things that I really need to get done before I leave town.
-
I don't know what else was on page 16. My computer just would not load it.
-
Next I watched another PSYCH episode. This was the one where Shawn and Gus investigate the world of speed dating. Funny episode and a good mystery.
-
BONES had a sensationally funny and entertaining episode tonight. Sweet, too, with the baby that both Booth and Bones bond with.
-
HOUSE, I didn't find nearly as entertaining. Maybe I'm just getting tired of all the grumpiness and games playing on the show. The medical case is starting to be an afterthought with the show.
-
MEDIUM was good, however. A very slick mystery with some good red herrings.
And I knew I hated Kelly Preston.
-
Tomorrow, I'll take a day off from reviewing and catch up with THE TUDORS, COLD CASE, and tonight's CSI: MIAMI. May watch more PSYCH, too. I don't think there are many more episodes in Season 1. I'll start on disc 4 tomorrow.
-
I can't remember, but I'm assuming someone thought of Hanya Holm, choreographer for MY FAIR LADY.
-
Heading to bed now. Good night!
-
I don't know what else was on page 16. My computer just would not load it.
Mostly filler posts to get us to page 17 so the board would work again
-
I don't watch Medium, but from the promos, I've always wondered...does she ever just wake up or is she always startled awake by a dream/vision?
-
Ok, night for real....
-
Good-job vibes to singingnymph
-
Tomorrow is the Vixter's 15th birthday... she has long been asking to join our group so I have set her up with a avatar and will let her know about it tomorrow.... she will be monitered.... oh she will be monitored!
She may be monitored...but we're not! ;)
-
A Very Happy Birthday to (soon-to-be DR) Vixter!! :D
-
When I viewed Woody's post #457 in Internet Explorer, it displayed as SUPER-SUPER-SUPER-SUPER-WIDE, but when viewing it in Netscape or Flock, it wraps to the regular size and is fine. :-\
-
Ugh, people still click on the big blue e[/color]?
-
I wonder if I can take us to page 18 before Mr. Bruce gets back.

Cat's Dream, by Pablo Neruda
How neatly a cat sleeps,
sleeps with its paws and its posture,
sleeps with its wicked claws,
and with its unfeeling blood,
sleeps with all the rings–
a series of burnt circles–
which have formed the odd geology
of its sand-colored tail.
I should like to sleep like a cat,
with all the fur of time,
with a tongue rough as flint,
with the dry sex of fire;
and after speaking to no one,
stretch myself over the world,
over roofs and landscapes,
with a passionate desire
to hunt the rats in my dreams.
I have seen how the cat asleep
would undulate, how the night
flowed through it like dark water;
and at times, it was going to fall
or possibly plunge into
the bare deserted snowdrifts.
Sometimes it grew so much in sleep
like a tiger’s great-grandfather,
and would leap in the darkness over
rooftops, clouds and volcanoes.
Sleep, sleep cat of the night,
with episcopal ceremony
and your stone-carved moustache.
Take care of all our dreams;
control the obscurity
of our slumbering prowess
with your relentless heart
and the great ruff of your tail.

CSU Fullerton is doing Urinetown next year, & I want to see it.
-
I did it.
-
*throws confetti*
-
Methinks Mr. Bruce turned into a wussburger tonight.
-
social graces I learned from drag queens
-
1. Always put your best face forward, you never know who you will will see at the market, or on what side of town your will be on when you car breaks down.
-
2. Always leave the house with your hair in a 'do'; if you run into your enemy while out and about, at least you can be confident that you looked better than they did.
-
3. Always show proper respect and courtesy to people, no matter how they treat you, at the end of the day, you'll be sitting pretty.
-
4. When those you love leave, send them away with a hug and a blessing. You don't know what is around the corner for any of us.
-
5. People who spit insults, you can't change, or teach them a lesson. The only thing you can control is how long you will be around them.
-
6. A sensible shoe has its day; a fuck me pump has its moment.
-
7. Men come and go, friends stay to clean up after the party. Or at least come back the next day to help you throw away all the condom wrappers.
-
8. Don't forget to take time to relax. Not only will you feel refreshed, you'll look more relaxed.
-
9. When you gossip about others, you are telling them it is okay to share everything they know about you.
-
10. Help those that have less than you. A helping hand got you where you are today.
-
11. Don't worry about the dead, they can't hurt you; it's the living you need to watch out for, honey.
-
12. Don't wait to peep tomorrow what you can flirt with today.
-
13. Handing out backstage passes is like admitting it's your birthday on your birthday. Sure, you are assured a party, but you won't get to control the quality of the services.
-
14. Make a grocery list and stick to it! Don't get so caught up cruising that hot young thing that you forget the french onion dip, but do manage to buy 3 different types of pretzels.
-
*le sigh*
-
Oh, hi there, Mr. Bruce!
-
What the HELL is going on with page sixteen?
-
I'm back and so behind it's not funny. Run-through didn't start until nine and I just got home and must now write notes and then write ninety-minutes of actor notes.
-
We have an audience of teens tomorrow night, and I was JUST informed that our drummer has a gig and won't be there. I think you can imagine how thrilled I am about THAT. Why wasn't I told a week ago, when I might have been able to do something about it? Anyway, I'll call our LA drummer and see if he's in town and free.
-
From what I gather, DR SWW broke it.
-
I have to think of some proper way to celebrate when I officially become an employee of the City of Manhattan Beach.
-
We have an audience of teens tomorrow night...
I want to see the looks on their faces at the feel-o-rama part.
