the TOD:
I have to give credit where credit is due since the amazing Richard Raugh ran The Pittsburgh Playhouse Film Repertory for years and years; every night a different film from the classics to the contemporary. All with the best possible prints available. OH, the wonders of a truly beautiful home to film, complete with a balcony. The Playhouse was where I spent a majority of my evenings when it was up and running.
Favorite films seen there for the first time were the uncut STAR!, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (I missed it in first run), LAST TANGO IN PARIS, GIANT, A STAR IS BORN (1954), JEAN DE FLORETTE/MANON OF THE SPRING, taking a staunch Catholic to see ROSEMARY'S BABY (he clutched my arm practically the entire time), IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, MILDRED PIERCE, NOW, VOYAGER, FANTASIA, FREAKS.
Another neighborhood offered The Guild, which after ending its existence as a first-run house, became a repertory house with weekly features. My favorite experience there was seeing PSYCHO and THE BIRDS on a double bill. (I remember it well, because that same night was a triple feature for me, I followed the Hitchcock with my first trip to see THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW).
