On Facebook, you have the opportunity to become a fan of Aretha Franklin's Inauguration Hat:
A glimmering vision of hope outshining the sun on a certain cold wintry day in January, tears of joy and the swell of optimism bursting from two million citizens' hearts as they focus their expectant gaze in one direction... you know what we are talking about and that is why you are here. To celebrate this vision of change, this paradigm shift, this sparkling, glittering vision, yes... Aretha Franklin's inauguration hat.
;D

Greetings folks.
Jose, thanks for the news about Mill Mountain.
I sent the news to Anthony. He will be sad also.
Yes, he did Beauty and the Beast there as well as ...Forum with Nick Dalton.
The trip to Wisconsin is still on with estimated time of departure set for sometime around February 5 or 6
-
We watched the Inauguration during lunch, eating all American peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
-
It was 17 when I left the house at 6am but I have a long sleeve shirt, a flannel shirt and jeans so I'm warm.
While on Long Island this past weekend we went to the Smithhaven Mall so Anthony could return something at the Lands End Department in Sears. They were having a post-holiday sale on waterproof shoes/sneakers. They were originally $49.50 during the Christmas season. The box was marked down to $24.95 so I decided to get a pair and when I took them to the sales clerk I found they were marked down even further to $17! What a deal.

I found a used copy of the new cast recording of The Fantasticks so we can now hear the alternate abduction song. It's the same tune, just different lyrics.

DR Jane i'm reading about your library trip from yesterday.
I've never heard of self-check out for books. I don't think they would ever do that here. Does your library have a motion sensor. The librarians here have to rub the books against the sensor so they don't go off when we leave.
Also, i can't even imagine a library letting dogs in. It sounds very odd to me. What if they chew on a book?

Wednesday morning greetings! It's cold and gloomy here in SW Ohio. I'm getting ready to take my salt-covered car to the car wash and then off to Dayton for lunch with the volunteer administrators.

I don't know of any library here that has a self-check out system or a drive-up window. They both sound interesting. But i guess the latter especially is not practical because of the way most libraries are set up.
My library is in the suburb's civic center that houses skating rinks and a pool. There is really no way that you could drive up.

DR td,
Some regular DVDs I've noticed are VERY good up-converted:
HELLO, DOLLY!, DOCTOR DOLITTLE, THE KING & I, FLOWER DRUM SONG, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, STARGATE, (surprisingly) the later Charlie Chan films from Fox, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, CASABLANCA, GOLDENEYE (or any of the James Bond Ultimate Edition releases), STAR WARS IV and V, V FOR VENDETTA, GYPSY, FUNNY FACE, SUNSET BOULEVARD.

Just getting around to thanking you all for all the splendiferous birthday wishes Saturday.
These are busy times, partly because part of the time is spent drumming up new business (I coach, accompany, transpose on sight, record, etc.) which then fills more times. Yesterday, I commenced teaching a choral arrangement that will be performed February 23. I hurried the rehearsal in order to let everyone out in time to run across the street to watch the Inaugural. One "helpful" singer offered to record me playing everyone's individual part on his iPhone and then e-mail everyone an mp3. Which meant I didn't make it out in time to see Justice Roberts' flub. Oh, well: Caught the speech, and of course thought of Mr. Guy Haines when the President mentioned picking ourselves up, dusting ourselves off..

I saved LEVERAGE from last night so I could watch it today while I eat lunch. I also still have MONK from Friday night to watch. DR Elmore's negative opinion of the episode has not helped it inch its way up the priority ladder!

Busy day for me. In fact, "busy" isn't the word for it. The packers arrive tomorrow and I am far from ready for them. As I will be staying with friends for a while I must decide which things I cannot live without and condense my life into a very small space. Ugh! I hate packing!
Last weekend I "lost" my bed, then my desk. Today is the last day on my desktop computer. (What's the point of a desktop when you have no desk, you ask.) I will have my laptop, but tend to feel cramped on it.
I shall be making a little sojourn to visit a friend next week, before making the trek west. I will post as I can.

I never imagined any dogs eating the books. ;D They had to be leashed & well behaved. I could understand changing the dog rule for the new building, not the old one. Sigh, Ashland was far more dog friendly when we first moved here than it is today. We still have plenty of stores we can go into but alas, fewer outdoor restaurants we can sit at. Dogs are considered a health hazard while birds, rats, & dirt aren’t. ??? It is odd we can sit outside with Sherlock at the restaurants along the main street, we just prefer not to. For one Sherlock takes up half the sidewall & nothing ruins a meal like a big truck parking right next to you while it unloads its goods. Second it is nicer along the walkway overlooking the creek.

If the "h" is pronounced, use "a" (like hilarious or human; if the "h" is silent, use "an" (like hour or honest). Words staring with "u" and "o have similar problems- "once" and "universal" take an "a")

I am trying to recall the name of a play from about twenty years ago--it's about a famous contemporary painter who visits his ex-lover in an attempt to retrieve a portrait he painted of her years ago. The scenes with his ex (and her husband) are interspread with scenes of him being grilled in an on-stage interview by a female art critic. The play had a good long run off-B'way and then was done all over the place regionally. Does it ring a bell with anyone?

WASHINGTON POST (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/20/AR2009012004482.html)
After Flub, Experts Say, A Do-Over Couldn't Hurt
By Josh White
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 21, 2009; Page A33
The presidential oath of office is required of a new president before he can execute his powers, and the Constitution is clear that its 35 words must be spoken exactly.
Which is what makes the oath President Obama took yesterday so interesting. It might be that the more than 1 million spectators didn't actually witness Obama being sworn in.
Because of a noticeable gaffe by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., Obama transposed the words. He should have said he will "faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States" but instead said he will "execute the Office of President of the United States faithfully."
Constitutional law experts agree that the flub is insignificant. Yet two previous presidents -- Calvin Coolidge and Chester A. Arthur -- repeated the oath privately because of similar issues.
Lawyers said Obama and his supporters need not be worried about the legitimacy of his presidency, but they also said a do-over couldn't hurt. Charles Cooper, head of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel under President Ronald Reagan, said that the oath is mandatory, that an incorrect recitation should be fixed and that he would be surprised if the oath had not already been re-administered.
..
Jonathan Turley, a professor of constitutional law at George Washington University, was hosting an inauguration party at his McLean home yesterday and did a mock swearing-in of 35 children. When Roberts erred, one child shouted: "That's not right!"
"He should probably go ahead and take the oath again," Turley said. "If he doesn't, there are going to be people who for the next four years are going to argue that he didn't meet the constitutional standard. I don't think it's necessary, and it's not a constitutional crisis. This is the chief justice's version of a wardrobe malfunction."
Turley is right - do it again. I jsut can't stand the thought of 4 years of "He really isn't the President" Emails.

derBrucer: Do you happen to have a perfectly in-focus photo of a male Northern Cardinal that I could crop and use as a church bulletin cover?
Let me check.

DtM- Might it be SIGHT UNSEEN?
-
First "Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off" and now "Do it Again" - who says the new administration isn't musical-theater-friendly? :)
-
DtM- Might it be SIGHT UNSEEN?
Yep!--that's the title, DR FJL! Thanks!
-
SIGHT UNSEEN was also done on Broadway in 2004.
-
Wow--even I want to beat that guy up.
He'd probably like it.
-
Jrand - That was lots of Fun!
P.S. I loved how the speech bridges musical theater over the generations, with the "etc, etc" of The King and I combined with the "Blah, blah, blah" of Spring Awakening. Quite prescient about Spring Awakening, I must say.
So let it be written - so let it be done.
-
Laura, DR - if you go to Google, select images, and then type in "male Northern cardinal," you will have a plethora of options. :)
-
Not exactly hilarity, DR DAW.....but it certainly was laughable.
And now, you may count me among the fans of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

Now watching Susan Hayward in I'll Cry Tomorrow. Obviously Jean Ratcliffe viewed this movie before writing Frances Farmer's "autobiography."

Thanks, DAW. I like to use my own photos (copyright laws and all that), but I don't have any good enough. I was hoping if I knew the photographer and he agreed to let me use one, I would be legal.

On TV Tonight!
ABC - LOST recap show, LOST (two hour season premiere)
NBC - KNIGHT RIDER, SVU (rerun), LAW & ORDER
CBS - comedies, CRIMINAL MINDS, CSI: NY
FOX - AMERICAN IDOL, LIE TO ME (series premiere)
FX - DAMAGES
I show a new episode of KNIGHT RIDER set to record tonight.
So do I. It's the episode of SVU that's a rerun.

So Laura DR doesn't get carted off to jail?

It is a beautiful day outside if still very cold.

I watched last night's LEVERAGE while I cooked and ate lunch. Good, tension-filled episode. Always a fun episode when you have a caper on a plane. There are only so many places you can go.

I spent the rest of the afternoon with ANY GIVEN SUNDAY. It is enjoyable if, like so many Oliver Stone movies, too busy and too filled with ideas to be contained in one movie. There must be something like six different plots being told.

Blu-ray doesn't do this film any favors with the picture all over the place from sharp and spectacular to oversaturated and hard to watch to soft and indistinct. Like the story, the film is just always going in so many directions as to quality control.

Early tests of the newly installed program indicate that we are now operating correctly, and we expect it to be fully functional on January 20. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage. We look forward to resuming full service and hope to improve in years to come. We thank you for your patience and understanding,

Also, i can't even imagine a library letting dogs in. It sounds very odd to me. What if they chew on a book?

Just checking the "local news" for New York City... -I didn't realize that the Wall Street Journal building was evacuated today due to someone sending 13 envelopes filled with a "white powder" to their offices. Thankfully, the powder was harmless, and was most likely flour.
And a fire just broke out at Mt. Sinai Hospital... which seems to be under control right now. I hope everyone is out of harm's way.

Nope - Rehoboth Beach has been Ashlandized. When we arrived, dogs could go into stores, bars, and on restaurant patios - now even the cafe's with sidewalk seating don't allow animals. Of course you can walk your dog right up to the sidewalk seating and he can greet the diners. The bookstore still puts water bowls on the sidewalk, and has a walk-up self-serve counter where you can order snacks, and they provide free dog-treats (and chairs where you and the pooch can enjoy your snacks, and browse thru a book or two.)

I have been called to jury duty.
Today was the first day during which we were divided into groups. About 50 of us were sent to a courtroom where the interviewing began. I was called to fill the no. 11 juror chair during the interviewing. There were 18 chairs...12 inside the jury box and 6 outside.
We started at 10 a.m. They began with the first chair. The first person went through all the questions and was dismissed. Another potential juror was called to replace him and he took the first chair and began going through all the questions. By 11:30 a.m., we had been through 5 people total but only through the 3rd chair (i.e. three were dismissed from the top and then the person in chair 2 was dismissed right off the bat and replaced). It was a long afternoon.
By the time we got to potential juror number 7 (1st person on my row), I was certain we'd not get to me today. Instead, each person subsequently went right through all the questions (on a sheet, front and back) all the way through potential juror 12 in a little over an hour. Then, we spent the rest of the afternoon on the remaining six potentials, all of which was followed by questioning by the defense attorney wanting to dig into our answers a bit. A few folks were called on, including me, but it looks like I may be the only one of those specially questioned who is likely to be "seated". I don't mind, really.
I cannot say more than that. We expect a jury to be seated by lunch tomorrow. The trial is expected to be given to the jury for deliberation sometime "next" Thursday (Jan. 29). Sigh. My first potential jury trial.
That is all. I have a sinus headache, of sorts, and I'm looking forward to a relaxing evening of high-falutin' TV.

I don't think dogs are really allowed anywhere. And i don't think anyone would even think to bring one to the library. I guess it depends what you are used to.

We have found most people with unruly dogs do not take them out to restaurants or shopping. At home & while traveling we have spoken to various workers/owners at shops, art galleries, restaurants, etc that invite dogs to visit. Basically the response is the same, they rarely or never have had a problem with dogs, children on the other hand far too many times.
In Ashland I know of four shops with live in cats & two with dogs that go to work with their owners. Our major complaint is the crack-down on dogs eating in one area of town, the area where there is plenty of space to spread out & not have your dog bother anyone.

I was called for Jury duty a month after Bryan was born. Naturally I was excused. The next time was just before moving out of state. I was called a few years back & received a medical exemption. I should be a permanent one.

I've had to report for a jury duty about 4 times, I guess but have been summoned about 10 times. The closest I ever came to actually getting on a jury was for a guy who was charged with 3 counts of first degree murder. Knowing how tough it is to get charges to stick, it must have been pretty gruesome. Luckily they decided they had the jury and alternates with the person just before me. This was right around the holidays, and the trial was estimated to take a few weeks. I believe in doing one's civic duty, but I really didn't want to be on a trial through the holidays.

Was this a highly publicized case, Kerry?

It's 7:30 pm in January, and it's 76 degrees!
It's going to be a very long summer.
Nah, it's always nice in January around this time! Unless they schedule the Phoenix Open or some other big outdooor event!
-
Was this a highly publicized case, Kerry?
No, I tried to see if there was anything about it in the papers, but it had to with some of the Mexican Mafia in and out of prison. I am not sure how long before the trial the crimes actually occurred.

Accuweather.com says we have a 50% chance of rain tomorrow.
I always figure we do every day. Either it will or it won't.
What's your headache (or lack thereof) telling you? My ankle is telling me something is going on with the barometric pressure.

It is a good thing DRS Kerry & Laura live in a warm climate with their natural barometers.

We desert rats have it made! At least in January!

I would love to spend January & February in the desert climate.

Here's some "Life On Mars" info! According to TVGuide's Mega Buzz (http://www.tvguide.com/News/MegaBuzz-Greys-Housewives-1001901.aspx) weekly e-mail:
Is there any word on the rest of Life on Mars' first season? I want to know if it really ends differently than the British original. — Robin
MICKEY: You can wait and find out when Mars returns on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 10 pm/ET (following Lost), but all signs point to a very different reason behind Sam Tyler's time-tripping. "In this next installment [of episodes], you'll see that the mythology is not as per the British version," ABC prez Steve McPherson said at the TCA winter press tour.
This is good information! I think I'll continue to watch it. :)

Time to head home and watch "Lost"!!
Until later!

Well, what if a person chewed on a book?
Ask DR Ginny this one ;)
I've seen worse - wa-a-a-ay worse :P
And, so, goodnight!

Here's a link to the latest edition of the TELL ME WHY (http://blog.92y.org/index.php/weblog/item/tell_me_why_podcast_david_zippel_lyricist/) Podcast from the 92nd Street Y.
"In this edition of the 92nd Street Y's Tell Me Why podcast, host Julian Fleisher talks with Tony Award-winning lyricist David Zippel, whose credits include City of Angels, The Goodbye Girl, Hercules and Mulan, among others. Zippel, the artistic director for the next Lyrics & Lyricists concert at the Y in February, It Started With a Dream: Lyrics He Wrote, Lyrics He Wishes He Wrote, shares his plans for the show, what it's like working with Liza Minelli, his favorite lyricists (including Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel) and much more."

I spent a good couple of hours watching the bonus features on the ANY GIVEN SUNDAY Blu-ray disc. Most of the bonuses were not in HD and were ported over from the SD version of the movie released years ago (which I have). Glad to have those behind me.

I've been called three times to jury duty. The first time was for Magistrate Court. It was to be held the day I was to register for my final semester of classes for my Masters, and the magistrate himself excused me.
The second time I had to call the night before to see if I needed to report. My juror number was one that didn't have to report.
The third time I did have to report, and I sat in a huge room all day long as they picked and chose people for juror consideration. I was never chosen. I read a book and a bunch of magazines while I waited during that very long day.

I had time to watch the MONK episode from Friday. I could easily see what annoyed DR Elmore so much about it, but the show made me laugh out loud several times, and the case was pretty good, too.

Well, since it IS "Ask BK Day. . . "
Barbara Cook has expressed her dislike for Cole Porter once or twice. (I don't agree with her on this).
But, say that Ms. Cook employed the very esteemed BK to produce an album of her singing Cole Porter songs, my question for ASK BK DAY is:
What ten or twelve Cole Porter compositions would you have Miss Barbara Cook sing?

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nada and nada in the previews for tomorrow.

Page Ten Dance!!!

Then, I settled in to watch the two episodes of LOST which began its fifth season.
All ideas about flashbacks and flashforwards is kind of shot to hell now with the multiple time frames for the show. Exciting, perplexing, riveting: everything LOST has almost always been and is still.
-
I'll have tonight's DAMAGES, LAW & ORDER, and CSI: NY on the DVR, and I suspect I'll be ready to start on the second season of THE INVADERS tomorrow night, too.

And now for something completely different...
Remember the Patti LuPone audio clip that was posted a few days ago?
Well... Here's the REMIX!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5Wh6DAFpW4)
;D
*And I believe DR elmore knows the creator of this bit of fabulosity. ;)
And a new word enters the Great White Way vocabulary!

Since I didn't get a great night of sleep last night, I'm heading down now to give it another try tonight!
Good night!

I seem to get called to jury duty every three years. It's always during the dog days of summer on a day when there doesn't seem to be a lot of court action. For the last two times I've not only not been picked for a panel, I was not even called up to the court. I was payed $5.00 for my efforts.

Tonight's LOST

I need to read Dewey. The librarian who wrote the book will be signing books at the local library Monday night. I'm thinking about going to ask her if the kitten they found around Christmas time has moved into the library
No, the library board voted not to adopt the new kitty. But the author has adopted him and taken him home! :D
Story here (http://www.usatoday.com/life/books/news/2009-01-02-dewey-new-cat_N.htm)
LOL. Too funny that I have to get my info about Spencer IA from someone in New York. Thanks for the info

Probably the same songs we chose for the Rebecca Luker Cole Porter album.

I just reread what I wrote today, and with just a couple of exceptions hated every minute of it - I went off on some weird tangent that was so wrong - so I just rewrote seven pages of stuff and now I'm much happier.

DR Jane, I guess we are just used to the no dog rules.
I don't think dogs are really allowed anywhere. And i don't think anyone would even think to bring one to the library. I guess it depends what you are used to.
I could see a dog being allowed to eat at an outside restaurant. Although even then i would want to make sure that the dog did not disturb anyone (i.e., if someone was eating at the next table who was not comfortable with it).
Our major complaint is the crack-down on dogs eating in one area of town, the area where there is plenty of space to spread out & not have your dog bother anyone.
the only dogs allowed in restaurants, stores etc here are dogs assisting the blind, deaf etc

I actually liked March in the dessert the best

I didn't last through all of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I think part of it is I have work that I was thinking about the work I need to do,. Anyway, I wasn't the only one leaving at intermission. It was a Canadian company. They were ok, but I just wasn't at all into the show and the sound levels were kind of goofy. I could hear everything but it all seemed so muffled.

I went to the office and worked until the show got out. Mostly because I don't like being in the office late at night when no one is around. I did get a lot done. Not everything I needed to get done, but most of it

Very interesting people are friending me on Facebook.

Will we never get to page eleven?

My mom called me at 10:30 tonight. She's never called me that late so I knew something was wrong. Turns out my brother is in the hospital. He doubled over in pain today and they took him to emergency. They don't think it's his heart (He had angioplasty when he was 36 years old, so we worry) but they will be checking again tomorrow. They think it may be gall bladder, but we don't know. This is DR Samantha's dad. She's been at the hospital with him ever since he got there. Vibes would really be appreciated

Excellent vibes and xylophones for Cilla's bro.
