From yesterday:

My sister has vegan cookbooks that are created without the use of eggs, so she doesn't have to convert regular recipes.

Um... I thought they had stopped using eggs to make books years ago?

;)

Umm...oops. ::)

From George:
Quote
The guy is going to be 89 years old in December, and when he very slowly walked up the two steps to the stage, he had to be helped.  But when he sat down and played, man...could he play!  It was a great show and my dad was in heaven!

Amazing!  How nice you could share the special evening with your father.

TOD:

As for a concept album, how about one featuring songs about dancing or that have the word "dance" or "dancing" in the title?  I can think of quite a few...

Dancing in the Dark
Ten Cents a Dance
Dance Ten, Looks Three
Dancing [Dolly]
Dancing Through Life (Wicked)
Waltzing Mathilda
The Tennessee Waltz
Do I Hear a Waltz?
Can That Boy Foxtrot? [the long version]
Shall We Dance?
The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing
Tango Tragique (She Loves Me)
Music Box Dancer [just kidding]
etc. etc. etc.

bk - As for "watching" "Mad Men" - Any time I've tried (re)watching a couple of episodes back to back, I've found that there was just too much "stuff" to take in.  It's a very dense show on many levels, and, at least for me, needs some breathing room in order to be fully appreciated.  Maybe you should just watch one or two at the most each day.

As for the second season - Once the main story line gets going, it's a pretty good ride.  -At least I thought it was.

A friend of mine at work was at the performance yesterday with the disruptive patron. Apparently he stayed in character the entire time. Apparently she had been delayed in getting to the theatre because of Broadway on Broadway and was told she had to stand in the back. Her seats were in the orchestra and since there is no intermission (90 minutes) and late seating for orchestra is frowned on, the house thought that was a good compromise. She didn't feel that way and loudly complained, enough that Mr. Jackman could hear. Since he's playing a hard-boiled Italian-American Chicago cop, the extra expletives and dialogue seemed to fit right in. I will try to see this show as I saw God of Carnage, on standing room.

BTW, my friend thought the show was excellent.

Title: Re: THE NEEDLE AND THE NUMBNESS

Last night DR JoseSPiano wrote:

"-The show has never been a commercial success, and AMC and the creatives have been open about the disparity between the critical and public reception.  It's been labeled as "The Best Show That No One is Watching"."

That was true until the beginning of this season. The season premiere this year brought AMC its largest audience in its history (can't remember if it was 4.3 million or 3.4 million). It seems the word has finally spread to those who are interested that it's a quality show with characters who are being developed slowly but in depth.

As for season two and season three, season two jumps forward in time a bit and we find out many, many more things about the enigmatic Don Draper. There are major changes for several of the characters in terms of jobs and personally. For me, there was no outlandish storyline that I had a hard time accepting in season two as I had in season one.

Season three has only been running three weeks, but it's continuing with gripping character-based narratives that I'm greatly enjoying.

I knew I wasn't in for a great night of sleep. Napping in the evening (though not planned) robbed me of the need to fall asleep quickly. It took awhile to fall asleep, and for the first time in days, I woke up several times during the night and each time had a hard time falling back asleep.

At least there were no pain spasms (a JMK reference), but I'm hoping for a better night tonight.

I guess I will go ahead and watch THE COMPLETE MONTEREY POP on Blu-ray today just to get it done. It comes out on the 22nd. The movie and its two follows ups are not that long (79, 49, and 17 minutes), but there are over two hours of outtake musical performances which will all take time to watch.

I should be working on this most of the day, I think. Luckily, there is nothing of interest on TV for me tonight.

I enjoy MAD MEN - it is one of my favorite shows.  Now we are in Season Three and last night's episode was very good.

Elizabeth Moss - who plays Peggy - is very good.  I like everyone in the cast....Bryan Batt, Vincent Kartheiser, Jon Hamm, and January Jones....everyone is very good.

The episode about the neighbor's birds will make you like Betty even more, I think....I am still haunted by the final image in that episode.

I've tried a number of times to get into MAD MEN (I even bought the Season One dvd set.)  But beyond the authenticity of the sets, costumes and general zeitgeist, I didn't find anything compelling enough in the stories or characters to keep up with it.

I had to call a roofer this morning. The flat part of my roof over my back porch (where my laundry room is) has been leaking. I attempted to do some patch work on it a couple of weeks ago, but when we had the mild rain last week, I noticed there was still leaking present. So, it's time for a new roof.

Call me penniless after these health issues, quarterly taxes, and now a new (partial) roof. And I'm not finished with home repairs. When it gets a little cooler, I'm going to have to have my kitchen replumbed. Oy!

SInce the roofer is coming to inspect and give an estimate at 2 p.m., I may not work today after all. I'll see how long all of that takes. I don't want to interrupt the film once it starts if I can help it.

Thanks all for the continuing vibes for Callie.  She's at the vet now. I got the warning about the things that can go wrong, so now I'm more worried that I was before, but there isn't much of a choice.  This has to be done.  They also told me she may have to spend the night tonight.  I'm not too excited about that, but if they need her to stay, well, she'll need to stay.  As the doc said yesterday, it's good that you understand everything that's going on, but it's too bad that you have the experience to understand it.

Yes, DR JMK - I think it is Luise's hate for Frances that's keeping her alive.  It is ironic that she last appeared at the Academy Awards ceremony the year that Jessica Lange was Oscar nominated for her portrayal of a fictionalized Frances.

TOD- - themes  I once came up with a "Rainbow" theme for a soloist, and I'm trying to remember what all we thought of- It was a decent variety of songs:

"Wish Me A Rainbow" (This Property is Condemned)
"Wish Me Rainbows"  (the Bergman song from "Fitzwilly")
There's A Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder
If you Want the Rainbow, You Must Have the Rain
Where's That Rainbow
Rainbow Conmnection
I'm Always Chasing Rainbows
Painting the Clouds with Sunshine ?  Well- kind of
A "Finian's Rainbow" overture!

There must be more....

I hope I get a chance to see your movie. I usually avoid things dealing with 9/11 (I was here when it happened, I may not have been downtown at the WTC but I saw the much of it from 5th Avenue and 16th Street and I have little wish to relive it) but our Dear Jose and Larry make me think it will be a worthwhile exercise.

Mark Forest is my favorite of the sons of Hercules aka Maciste.  He is a Brooklyn born opera singer/body builder with a nice face.

For those interested (I'm not), Jay Leno's new five-night-a-week program premieres today.

DR Jennifer (and maybe some others) will be watching the CW's line-up of ONE TREE HILL and GOSSIP GIRL new episodes.

If I got the CW i would definitely be watching these two. :(

Unfortunately GG used to be on CTV (the main canadian network). But now it is on their sister station which is not available in Quebec. Although I can get it next friday on Much Music.

One Tree Hill used to be on SunTv. But it doesn't look like it will be on this season for some reason. :(

Is anyone gonna watch Leno?

DR Jane, i can't wear any perfume so i can't put some on my wrist.

I have in the past sniffed some very strong bubble gum! :)

I actually got really mad at my dad for putting on aftershave right before he knew we would be driving together. He probably didn't do it on purpose. But it just felt like he did.

Then he got mad at me (because he doesn't believe it really bothers me as much as i say). And then he always says if it does then i should go to the doctor.

I wonder if there is anything the doctor could do?

I watched The VAMPIRE DIARIES pilot last night.

I will say that for those who turned it off after 10 minutes, you probably didn't get an accurate idea of what the show is. To me the beginning was not very good.

It did get better for the 2nd half. I thought Ian S (from LOST) was very good as Damon. The other guy as Stefan is okay. Although I think they should be paler.

They changed a bunch of things from the book that were sort of annoying. I find elena looks too old. And i loved her as having stunning golden locks.

And having a 15-16 year old brother instead of little sister. And the aunt seemed really young and ditzy vs in the book where she is very responsible.

There were only a few characters who were similar to what i was expecting (the spoiled brat caroline, tyler, matt).

Hopefully the show will get a lot better next week!

Really?  Hate to bury it on page four, but okay, here it is - we're very excited about this one - and given the number that one online dealer is taking, I can't imagine it won't sell out quickly.  As always, it's $19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid to kritzerland at adelphia dot net via paypal.

“I LOVED YOU AS I LOVED THE STEPPES.”

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition soundtrack.

TARAS BULBA

Music Composed and Conducted by Franz Waxman.

Released in 1962 a week after Lawrence Of Arabia, Taras Bulba, was not a thinking man’s epic like Lawrence or any of the other epics of the time, such as Ben-Hur, Spartacus, El Cid, King Of Kings – it was more of a grand adventure yarn and critics and audiences of the time were just not that interested, despite the film having two big stars in Yul Brynner and Tony Curtis, and a director, J. Lee Thompson, who’d just come off a huge smash hit with The Guns Of Navarone.  What Taras Bulba did have was an absolutely brilliant score by the great Franz Waxman, the composer who also gave us such classics as The Bride Of Frankenstein, Sunset Blvd., A Place In The Sun, Sayonara, Peyton Place, Prince Valiant, Rear Window, Crime In The Streets, Spirit Of St. Louis, The Nun’s Story, and many others.

From the rousing main title, to the astonishing almost twelve-minute finale, Waxman’s Taras Bulba is filled with one glorious cue after another, and features one of his most beautiful and incandescent melodies in “The Wishing Star” – every time that theme makes an appearance in the score is utterly magical.

The original LP release was a re-recording, as was the fashion in those days.  The sound on that release was dry and shrill, and the sonics were further compromised because for an LP release, it was longer than usual.  A CD was issued on Ryko back in 1998 (long out-of-print) – that CD was mastered from the original album masters and, while well produced, still had dry and shrill sound.  For this brand-new edition, we were lucky to uncover the original three-track session master of the album takes – in other words, the first generation tapes.  While still dry and shrill, the tapes were in perfect condition and the clarity was astonishing.  For the first time, we’ve added some subtle and necessary room ambience, so that the instruments don’t sound like they were recorded in a tiny closet with no air around them, and we’ve added the missing low-end, which basically alleviated the shrillness without losing any of the punch or the bite of the incredible-sounding brass.  We hope you’ll agree, that this is Taras Bulba sounding better than it ever has.

Also found on the three-track master was the instrumental-only track to “The Wishing Star” and a female-only chorus version of the song (on the album it’s male and female).  We’ve included these as bonus tracks.

The great Bernard Herrmann called Taras Bulba “The score of a lifetime.”  And indeed it is – one of the greatest action/adventure scores ever written by one of the greatest film composers who ever lived.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the first week of third week of October – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).

I don't remember allergy shots helped with my allergies from scented products.  It might not hurt to look into it.  While very unpleasant my reaction to perfume is not as serious as yours.

I understand why your feelings are hurt when your family members forget, don't take it personally.  They really can't understand and as they get older they are more likely to forget it bothers you.

As for a concept album, how about one featuring songs about dancing or that have the word "dance" or "dancing" in the title?  I can think of quite a few...

Dancing in the Dark
Ten Cents a Dance
Dance Ten, Looks Three
Dancing [Dolly]
Dancing Through Life (Wicked)
Waltzing Mathilda
The Tennessee Waltz
Do I Hear a Waltz?
Can That Boy Foxtrot? [the long version]
Shall We Dance?
The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing
Tango Tragique (She Loves Me)
Music Box Dancer [just kidding]
etc. etc. etc.

Could we include "Two to Tango" and "Papa Loves Mambo"?

I believe she's going to get through this, but I still worry.  It's been 4 1/2 years of medicine 3 times a day, but it's been 2 years since the last time she needed all this done.   It means back to the drawing board on her diet and even more for me to do, but since since she's only 7 years old, it's all worth it to me.

First pictures of Bugatti's 16C Galibier concept

The company is targeting a top speed of 240 mph, which would handily establish the Galibier as the fastest four-door car in the world.
...
Bugatti has no clear idea what they should charge for such a car. The Veyron costs about $1.8 million, depending on the exchange rate at the moment.  Paefgen said he was thinking "in the neighborhood" of the Veyron.

In person, the concept car -- overseen by Bugatti exterior designer Achim Anscheidt -- is stunning. It's a little larger than the Bentley Continental GT, with broad, scalloped flanks rolling into the front wings, all in polished aluminum, and the remaining bodywork is fabricated out of tinted carbon fiber. The structural chassis will be aluminum and carbon. Schreiber says the car will be lighter than any comparable four-door car, but what car he might be thinking of escapes me.

The fastback rear design strongly evokes the Type 57 SC Atlantic with a slight raised spine limned in LED, the curvature of the trunk lid opening echoing the Atlantic's trunk lid, and the quad exhausts -- two sets, for a total of eight tailpipes.

The interior is similarly spectacular, with a burled walnut surfboard-like console running between the front and rear cabin. There are only two instruments in the dash -- a speedo and tach. In front of the driver is an LCD screen with a kind of iPhone interface, allowing drivers to leaf through applications.

After the Holidays, Keith can drive Sherlock about in the luxury he deserves.

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time anyway.  :-\

"Mama, a Rainbow" from Minnie's Boys!

If you leave your chewing gum on the bedpost overnight - keep the pooch away!

Sugar-free-gum-and-snacks-can-be-deadly-for-pets

Most pet owners know that chocolate is a big no-no for dogs. But here's something to chew on: a common ingredient in sugarless gum and snacks can cause a canine catastrophe.

The culprit is a sweetener called xylitol. While you may never have heard of it, there's a good chance you have it in your house. Xylitol is common in sugarless gum and in sugar-free snacks, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Cases of xylitol poisoning in dogs have increased in recent years as the sweetener has been added to lots of new foods, Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, vice president of the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, told Paw Nation. "There definitely has been an increase in the exposures of dogs to xylitol over the last several years, simply because there's more xylitol out there."

A little xylitol goes a long way. Just two sticks of sugarless gum can be fatal for a 20-pound dog, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune, and a single sugar-free pudding cup can spell trouble for a 90-pound pooch. But those numbers can be misleading, Gwaltney-Brant cautions. Some brands of gum or candy contain no xylitol, while others contain relatively large amounts. Even within a single brand, the level of xylitol can vary from flavor to flavor and batch to batch, she says.

I had time this morning to watch an NCIS episode before I headed off to PT. It was a grisly episode where "meat puzzles" were being sent to Ducky finally figuring out that he was next in line to be killed and disected. Nice surprise ending. This was the episode where a very aged Nina Foch play David McCallum's mother.

I got to meet my "new" therapist at PT today. She kept me longer than I've ever seen kept before, but she did some good stretching, etc. I have felt better this afternoon and haven't needed any ibruprofrin (yet). She signed me up for three more sessions, the next one on Friday of this week.

Went to lunch with best friend John and had a good time talking about GLEE which he only got around to watching last night. He really liked the second episode as much as the pilot (which I didn't). Still, it's always nice to find a show we can both look forward to watching and then talking about. Our other regulars, '24' and LOST don't come back on until 2010.

I had planned to take the afternoon off since it looked like the roofer's inspection/estimate visit would eat up too much time to get MONTEREY POP watched. However, he was gone by 2:15, so that left me plenty of time to watch the film on Blu-ray (looks nice but it was never a dazzling film pictorially) and listen to quite a bit of the commentary track, too.

I'm dead meat today; I forgot to tape THE GUIDING LIGHT! I was so caught up in finishing a score, George and the shelves, etc. that I plumb forgot. I am so angry at myself. Is there any West Coaster who may have it on their tv schedule tis afternoon who can tape it for me?

It's not on until 2:00 p.m., Pacific time, so I can record it.  Should it specifically be on videotape or DVD?  I can do either, or both.

DR George, DVD would be great! I'll have everything else for Dakotacelt. Thank you.

Today I received the results of the medical scans I had a couple of weeks ago:  low risk for osteoporosis, no carotid artery disease, no peripheral arterial disease, and no abdominal aortic aneruysm.  It was the last one that concerned me the most, as my father had an AAA (detected and repaired) in his late 50s.

Yes, I too, vote that Bruce Kimmel would do a studio CD with Guy Haines. I've always really liked his voice - it's very soothing.

I, too, really really hate needles in my cheek or gums. A dentist once explained to me that it's not even the needle that causes pain - it's the novacaine pushing the tissue out of the way. So, the only way to administer a needle painlessly is to push the plunger really really slooooowwwly. That dentist is the only one who ever gave me a needle that I couldn't feel at all. Alas, no other dentist has ever had that much patience, no matter how much I begged them to go really really sloooowwwly. I imagine they wouldn't meet their daily quote of needling if they always moved that slowly. So, instead they all do that really stupid cheek-shaking thing, which doesn't minimize the pain at all because the novacaine is still blasting tissue out of the way while your cheek is shaking.

Lets just say it was an invasive procedure and leave it at that.  She's not a happy camper at all. I think she was probably so upset they decided to send her home.   She's calmed down - other than a big hiss at Boo. I moved a litter box into the guest room - where she goes when she doesn't feel good, covered up the things she could make a mess of and shut the door.  I'll check on her later, but she really needs a little peace and quiet for awhile

I'm finally back.  The dentist was sheer torture.  The shot was actually the least of it today - that didn't hurt nearly as much as the last time.  But the drilling down of the tooth that's getting the crown was excruciating.  It was like he kept hitting a nerve - he said he wasn't, but it sure felt like it - and it took longer than the other tooth.  At some point, he shot some more Novocain directly where he was working, and that really helped.  I have the temporary crown in now, but that whole side of my mouth is really sore, like someone had punched me really hard there.  And the tooth itself is sore on top of that, and I'm still a little numb on top of that, and I'm getting a headache on top of that, so I don't know that I'll be going to see that show tonight.

The Liz CD took so long because she was paying for half or more of it, and the label had to come up with the rest - I know they did part of it at one point and the rest later.  Alex Rybeck told me that the roughs sounded good, and with Liz I'm sure it will be a nice CD.

Interesting.  Thanks for the info, BK.

DR  Jane I used to get allergy shots when i was a kid. But then i forget why we stopped (my sister used to get them too).

I don't recall being allergic to perfume when i was a kid. I do recall when i was in my 20s that i would not be able to walk through the front of the department stores (they were so full of perfumes).

I don't really find my allergy that bad. But i'm not exposed to perfume that much. Smoke also bothers me just as much. But i'm not exposed to that very much anymore. Since they stopped allowing people to smoke in restaurants and shopping malls i almost never have to inhale it.

I then went to the tape transfer place.  I was there longer than I cared to be, and if I'm going to do this one project, which I really want to do, it's going to be a bit of a nightmare - the quarter-inch tape that has all the mixed music on it, and which would be the easiest to use, unfortunately is mono, 7 1/2ips, and distorted throughout.  So, we have to transfer all the circled takes from seven reels of half-inch tape, but these include a lot of overdubs that are on different tapes (everything was click-tracked, but we don't have the bloody click) - so it's all going into pro-tools and I'll have that quarter-inch as a guide as to how it all gets put together.  Hopefully everything we need is on the half-inch tapes - hard to know because the logs are very VERY confusing.  Great score, though.  Happily, one of the other two scores that would be paired with it had an album master prepared at the time of the film's release, but the album never came out - that one is in perfect shape and easy/breezy.  I have to pick up the tapes for the other title - there are five of them, so I don't know what the story on that will be.

The other tapes were very straightforward and easy.  Today's batch would be a total of three releases, one release having three scores.

For the couple of BIG BROTHER fans here i'm curious:

Who do you think each player would take to F2?

And who do you want to win in the various combos?

.
.
.

It gave me so much pleasure when jordan beat natalie in part 2 of hoh last thursday. I cannot stand the latter. And really do not want to see her in the F2.

Although it could be good maybe if jordan takes her and wins.

But i think the most pleasure i would get is if kevin won part 3 of hoh and took jordan and sent gnat packing. I get the feeling that that is what the Diary Room wants and what a lot of the fans probably want.

In this scenario i would be okay with kevin winning. But if takes nat i will be very mad and don't want either of them to win.

If it is jordan/nat i want jordan. Jordan/kevin i want jordan but if he wins and takes her then i am fine with him winning (he would be more deserving). If it is kevin/nat i will want kev but only because i dislike nat.

And speaking of soundtracks, I just ordered Kritzerland's newest!

We'll see how it goes - it's a VERY expensive release as it is (three scores on one or two CDs is not cheap), and the extra expense of transferring all these tapes is huge, and then there's the work of putting it all together.  But if it can be done, it will be, for me, the release of the year.

DR Elmore i'm glad DR George was able to record Guiding Light for you. If i had read it before the show aired here (3pm) i could have done it too.

It was a really nostalgic episode with some former residents returning. And the wedding!

I haven't thought the show was that good for the last while. But some of the episodes recently have been tear-jerkers. Friday will be really sad.

(obviously i wrote the above before getting to page 8).

DR MattH, re: the 2nd episode of GLEE.

I'm not sure i would say i liked the 2nd show as much as the 1st. I thought the beginning of episode 2 was sort of slow. But i thought the second half was really good. And i liked that part as much as the pilot.

It is interesting to me how many people are watching it. I would not have thought it would appeal to so many different types of people. My brother-in-law's best friend who loves reality shows loves it and told my b-i-l to watch it. And my parents even watch it!

Bruce I had a similar experience with my first crown.  Be glad the 2nd shot worked as nothing helped me.  I had the crown replaced several times, and the glue updated with the latest sensitive reducing glue available and I still have pain when I bite down on something.  I'm grateful the pain isn't constant anymore, only took about 10 years for that to happen.

DR Jennifer,

I am basicall in agreement with you re: Big Brother. I don't want Natalie to win. Period.

I would love to see Kevin boot Nat right out the door.

I lean towards wanting Jordan to win, not that I thought she was a great player or anything, it is just that she is such a sweetheart, and I know she desperately needs the money. But if Kevin wins, that is good too.

Mark Forest is my favorite of the sons of Hercules aka Maciste.  He is a Brooklyn born opera singer/body builder with a nice face.

He lives in Arleta California today where he teaches opera.

And in another ten years he will be perfect for M. Barnum.

My other good news today, besides George and the bookcases, is that my copy of Sondra Lee's bio arrived today. She's a neat lady and I like her very much. Given any talk shows, I skip watching the musical guest.  So far, Conan O'Brien didn't feature Tony Bennett or John-boy (Pizzarelli) yet.

I am EXHAUSTED! Doing that entire box set of MONTEREY POP today and tonight just wore me out. Was nice to see so many long gone musicians looking so young and fit. Cass Elliott, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, the list goes on and on.

I guess we all WERE that young once upon a time.

Finishing that Criterion box set, however, clears my decks completely. There is nothing here to review. Of course, Fox/MGM is releasing something like six or seven items this week. The Fox ones are mine automatically. I'll have to be told if I get to do any of the MGM ones. But whatever and whenever they come in, I'll be busy from that day on until I finish with them.

So...

My flight out of Charlotte left about 30 minutes late.  The captain had made an announcement that they had not yet received clearance to leave the gate, but that we should be departing sometime soon.  A few minutes later, two gentlemen were ask to leave the plane, but they would be put on the next flight...

The TSA was doing a random ID check at the gate, and, apparently, something didn't "look right" on the passenger manifest.

Needless to say, it was not the most pleasant way to start a flight.

Once I got past my work project, I watched another NCIS episode. In it, McGee is called in to help a computer whiz who witnesses a murder across her street (shades of REAR WINDOW). Pretty easy to guess the murderer, but it was certainly a bittersweet episode.

Next I watched my CASTLE episode of the day. This was one of my least favorite episodes of the season, the one with the teenaged kids all connected to a murder of their friend and lying and covering up for one another. A very frustrating episode.

Thankfully, we each have our own rooms here, but I may crash at a friend's place tomorrow night - and the night after - if they're still sniffling, sneezing and coughing.

As for Leno...

I've never thought that Jay Leno was that funny.  Well, he's funny, but I actually prefer a bit more edge to my comedy.  Leno's "Big Tent" entertainment just doesn't hold my attention for more than five minutes. -Thus, I usually watch Letterman.

As for today's auditions, well...

It was a pretty good batch of actors and actresses.  However... Well... Let me put it this way...

A young man walked up to me at the briefing and asked if it would be OK if he gave me some handwritten music.  He was concerned that I wouldn't be able to read it.  He had just picked a new song a few days ago (Red Flag #1), and transposed and written it out himself (Red Flag #2).  I asked him if he had given it to someone else to read, and he said, "No, since I just did it." (Red Flag #3)

-Well, just let me look at it now and I'll tell if I can read it.  And he did.  And it was readable.  So...

A few hours later when it came time for his audition, he put the music in front of me on the piano.  He asked for the first pitch, and then we would start together. Well...

I hit his first pitch. He started singing on that pitch. I started playing the accompaniment.  Hmmm, something sounds really interesting. Am I missing an accidental? Is this some sort of jazzed up arrangement? After what seemed like the longest 30 seconds in the world, he finished singing, I finished playing, and he started his monologue.  And I was trying to stifle a giggle and some rolling eyes.  Then after closer inspection, I realized what had happened...

The original key of the song was C-Major.  He wanted to sing it in a lower key, the key of A-Major.  A-Major has three sharps (#s) - F#, C# and G#.  When he wrote out his "transposition", he put the new key signature, but did not bother to lower the actual notes by the required minor third.  In essence, all he really did was slap a new key on the existing music.  So...

He sang in his key.  I played in my key.  And never the twain did meet.
Title: Re: THE NEEDLE AND THE NUMBNESS
Post by: JoseSPiano on September 14, 2009, 08:46:51 PM
*I did get his audition number, and I will be contacting the office to get his email address.  I almost went up to him at the dance call, but...

He should know that readable does not mean correct.  -And that he really should have someone else play through his music before he brings it into an audition.  (Like, DUH!)

Obama Calls Kanye West a 'Jackass' (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/15/obama-calls-kanye-west-jackass/)

Quote
President reportedly lashes out at hip-hop artist Kanye West during an interview Monday

An ABC spokesperson said, "In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview," Politico reported. "This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again."

Sure agree with Obama on this one!
