Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not the end of an era, and now it is time for you to post until not quite the end of the cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  in Lacey, there used to be a drive-in hamburger joint called Norm's and they had the best burgers.  There was no indoor seating, just picnic tables outside, so it was an actual drive-in.  Norm's closed more than 20 years ago, but people still remember their burgers fondly. :D

I will be off to the office soon.

I'll probably be there for 5 or 6 hours then I have some errands to run.

Anthony will do the laundry today and then we will probably go to the diner for dinner and then come home and watch Hobson's Choice with Charles Laughton

There is an interview with Michael Ball and Doris Day during the program.

TOD: When I lived in Port Charlotte, Fla., I would frequent a place called Thai Cafe and became friends with the owners, Sam and Nancy. The food was fantastic, especially during stone crab season, when they would make their usual dishes with tiny stone crab claws.

Nancy also made these amazing Thai donuts using rice flour and they were served steaming hot from the fryer. You'd then dip them in a vanilla glaze with peanuts in them and practically gorge yourself on the richness.

They moved to Sarasota and then on to LA about a year after I moved to San Antonio. That's about when I lost touch with them.

I remember the Painted Horse restaurant as one we always wanted to go back to whenever we visited the Miami area, which seemed to be often in the 1960's and 1970's.

My favorite sandwich shop was called Warners in Venice, CA. I think it was actually on Venice Blvd. Their sandwiches were made on absolutely the best bread. At one point they came out with two new sandwiches, tongue and headcheese. I had the tongue a couple times and it was quite good, but just a couple months after they introduced the new sandwiches, they were gone from the menu again because obviously everyone else thought tongue and headcheese were gross. I remember the surprised looks on their faces when I ordered the tongue.

Good morning, all! I slept late, and I am cleaning the apartment. This will continue tomorrow, as I try to put everything back in place. The bathroom and kitchen rugs are in the washer and I will very shortly mop the floors.

I'm listening to the final mix, and I think it's sounding very nice. I'm grateful to Judy Sherman, Jeanne Velonis, and John Kilgore in Manhattan, Brian Masterson, Naomi MacLeod, Joe Csibi, and Jonathan Ford in Dublin for making my life easier and production so smooth! I'm also very grateful to all of you who sent vibes for the emotional support. I'm keeping the names of those who didn't for the next time they ask for vibes.

DR TCB, I am quite fond of RENT, which surprised me, since I went into the theatre prepared to hate it.  There are a couple of dud numbers ("Over the Moon"), but I like a great deal of the score, I liked the original staging, and it moved me. I much prefer it to La Boheme over Disney's version of Verdi's Aïda.

As to Light in The Piazza. I thought it was quite beautiful but I preferred Floyd Collins, which was stunning. I am not a great fan of Adam's music; I don't think he's as good with a tune as his mother and grandfather, but he writes in a completely different mode, and I prefer it less.

TOD (preview version):

VERY difficult to answer; in fact, choosing one restaurant would be impossible.  I will have to narrow it down to a few places in each of the areas I've lived in or visited a lot -- and believe me, that's still almost as difficult as going for only one.  There's something very special about the way our long gone favorite eateries touch us.  The first posts here have already been helpful, and of course you KNOW from my various postings over the past couple of years that the Hamburger Hamlet will make an appearance.  For now, I'm about to start another crazy day, so won't be around till much later.

To Be Continued...

Yep! I asked the super on Thursday, and he said the landlord is aware. I'll send him an email on Monday. I suspect that their appliance repair folk are answering demands for air conditioner repair at the moment.

There was a restaurant on the Sunset Strip that I liked.  I don't recall the name, but the building it occupied used to be John Barrymore's guest house.  Indeed, Barrymore pictures adorned all the walls.

I had not read the article yet, only the headlines.  All I can find now is that it is closing.  Where did you read it is temporary?  I can't find anything that says it will reopen?

Never mind.  I see where that was by word of mouth to you :)

DR TCB, the same thing happened in 1980 with the Central Park production of The Pirates of Penzance. I was leery going into it, and fell in love with it. Sawit twice in the Park and twice on Broadway. Go figure!

I think ROBERTA's going to be good. After listening a couple of times to it today, I credit the HHW vibes and support for it and the ceiling repair for taking what was okay, maybe a little more than passable, after May's mix to something really special. I'm very grateful.

This weekend is the famous, or infamous, Taste of Tacoma.  It began yesterday, but it was overcast and a little stormy with some showers off and on all day.  It didn't seem like attendance ever did pick up, and last night around the time it closes for the night, there was no rush of cars leaving the park.  Today, our newpaper politely noted that the festival started slowly!

This morning the Taste opened at 11:00, but it was pouring rain.  Finally the rain has stopped and we are starting to get blue skies, so hopefully the crowds will start turning out.

The Berkshire Record Outlet was selling the DVD of the park production, not the movie, for $4.99. That's the one with Patricia Routledge instead of Angela Lansbury. BerkshireRecordOutlet.com.

I thought it was Estelle Parsons on Broadway?

DR TCB, the same thing happened in 1980 with the Central Park production of The Pirates of Penzance. I was leery going into it, and fell in love with it. Sawit twice in the Park and twice on Broadway. Go figure!

It was Patricia Routledge (in the park) and Estelle Parsons (on Broadway). Angela was in the filmed version of that production.

Linda Ronstadt starred as Mabel, Rex Smith as Frederic, Kevin Kline as the Pirate King, Patricia Routledge as Ruth (replaced by Estelle Parsons for the Broadway transfer), George Rose as the Major-General, and Tony Azito as the Sergeant of Police. Kline won a Tony Award for his performance. Smith won a Theatre World Award. The Papp production was turned into a film in 1983, with the original Broadway principal cast reprising their roles, except that Angela Lansbury replaced Estelle Parsons as Ruth. The minor roles used British actors miming to their Broadway counterparts. The film has been shown occasionally on television. Another film based loosely on the opera and inspired by the success of the Papp version, The Pirate Movie, was released during the Broadway run.

T.O.D.

There was a restaurant that opened in Tacoma in the mid-Seventies called Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker, but everyone called it the BBC.  They opened three of four other restaurants around the Northwest in the next couple of years, all but one of them called BBC.  The food was wonderful and the service was good.  The prices were pretty reasonable for the times.  They had a great steak and lobster.

After ten years they all folded, except for the sister reaturant with the different name.  It is still open today, although under different owners.  In fact, George and his family went there the other day for the anniversary dinner.  It is called Falls Terrace.

I know it's a unique thing, but perhaps one of the people reporting this on the actual news sites, might have actually picked up the phone and found out for themselves, but that's not the way it works anymore, I'm afraid.

Very annoying, kind of like the news reporting about the little girl who wasn't permitted to go to the bathroom and not one single article verified JetBlue's statement that it was according to FAA regulations.

Have you noticed that it's often the better eateries that close, while the rather mediocre chains survive? One reason may be that the chains are well-capitalized. They also have the advantage of being better known, and thus, predictable. If you agree that the better eateries generally use better ingredients, which tend to be more expensive, then they're more at risk when commodity prices rise.

DR John G, your insights? Other DRs?

I think the chains survive because a growing number of people expect consistency no matter where they are. I'm not a fan of that.

There are so many reasons restaurants don't make it, though. Some of the family places don't survive because of something that happens outside the scope of the restaurant. It could be a family illness, divorce or fight. It could be they lose interest. I've dealt with so many.

It's just sad because we do form attachments to places, to the people there and to the food. I would love to have some of Nancy's Thai food again.

Thunder and torrential rain here at the moment...

We had that tonight too!!!  I think we must be up to about 14 inches of rain this month. We usually have about 3.5

Some friends threw a graduation party for me this afternoon. Quite fun. Bought a pack of strip steaks from Costco, which we grilled. Love that flavor.

The rest of the afternoon was just sitting around and talking. Very nice.

I went to a Fur-stival at the SC Animal Adoption and Rescue center  aka the pound today.   The silent auction items were so good I kept bidding on too many and got most of them.  But I got some really cool stuff and only a few dog things I'll need to give someone else.

Yesterday I said something I shouldn't have about an issue in my family.  Luckily it seems to be cleared up today.  I have to remember "Not my Circus. Not my monkeys"  I actually told my brother to stop telling me things about this issue until it's totally resolved.   I'd rather not know than say what I think when it's definitely not welcomed

That's been the plan the past couple years.  Instead of traveling, I'm getting my entertainment here.   There are an amazing number of things to do here if you just do them.

I can't wait for the 4th of July.  I'm going to be in a parade in a nearby time and several of us will be playing "Yankee Doodle" on our piccolos while riding down the street in the back of a pick-up truck.  Now if that's not an Iowa 4th of July I don't know what is

Started watching Catskills on Broadway. Sadly the jokes haven't changed and haven't aged either. Louise Duart is doing jokes about Prince Charles, Madonna and Cher while impersonating Joan Rivers.

Well, it (the family situation) was unpleasant.  I didn't know how it was going to resolve itself or if it was going to resolve itself, so I was going to go out to eat with Paul. He wanted to go to the opening of the sound garden (quite cool) at a local non profit music school...it's a cool outdoor space...but when it was time to go to dinner he wanted to go with a big group including someone I don't particularly like or get along with, so I claimed a headache and came home.   It was a bad enough day without having to be civil to someone I wasn't in the mood to be civil to

Thanks!  It's in the Ice Cream Capitol of the World, so I'm sure there will be ice cream involved.  I'll play for ice cream any day

when I was in my teens and twenties and my folks still had their boat we used to spend our 4th of July on Fire Island -- no cars are allowed on the Island  so the parade contained  marchers, bicycles and the  floats were little red wagons.. there was always one guy dress liked the statue of liberty being pulled in a wagon -  his  torch was a painted conch shell

Unfortunately, I really have that headache I made up last night.   Maybe I should have a bowl of fresh peaches on vanilla bean ice cream with a side of Aleve.   That ought to make it better

Good evening, all.

Just got back from BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON.

Now, whatever else they say about me, they'll never be able to say I didn't see BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON.

Love it!  I decided a while back I'm not going to go home for the usual family drama this year.  I'll miss seeing my great nieces and nephews, but I want to be able to play in the parade and do some of the other fun things going on here.  Instead of worrying about it, I just said no, I'm not coming.  It was much easier and no one was upset by it
