Title: THE LONG REHEARSAL DAY
Post by: bk on November 14, 2014, 10:29:04 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were long and rehearsed, and now it is time for you to post until the long and rehearsed cows come home.

From yesterday (even though it's really still today):
I was putting all my props away just now, and realized belatedly that I performed the entire Music Man sequence in a straw hat that still had the bar code showing.

Just tell everyone that you were channeling Minnie Pearl.

I think the Hollywood Film awards would only have been entertaining if all of the viewers had been as drunk as the people attending the awards.

It looks like this year's "Best Actor" race is going to be a tough one to call.  You have Michael Keaton, Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Eddie Redmayne.  And the Film Awards managed to honor all five with various awards.

Can't sleep. Would you believe they were drilling the street (47th) till a few minutes ago ?  I woke up at about 1:45 am and called the front desk. The guy said it took them by surprise but he could see why the city approved it since Saturday is a matinee day !  He said they had put a call in to the non -emergency number, 311.  I don't know if that's why it stopped but I hope I can go back to sleep.

While Shake Shack (http://www.shakeshack.com/location/upper-west-side/) could be fun, it will also most likely be mobbed. It is a very, very popular place at all locations (Madison Square, Midtown, UWS) and at the time of possible food ingestion it could be extremely busy. That's not to say we shouldn't go but it will take lots of work, especially if we want to sit together.

If we went early enough we could go to Artie's (http://www.arties83rd.net/) (83rd and Broadway) but we would have to leave plenty of time to eat, talk, pay and get back down to 72nd and Broadway before 7pm.

There is also Dallas BBQ (http://www.dallasbbq.com/upper-westside) on 72nd Street near Central Park. They do have salads for Kevin (vegetabletarian) and they also have a couple of vegetarian starters as well. You can check out the menu at the link. I haven't been there for years but it's just a few blocks (3) from Triad/Stage72, which would save Richard some walking (thinking of his knee).

There is also Viand Cafe (http://viandcafenyc.com/food-delivery-TW/viand-cafe-new-york-city.1953.r?QueryStringValue=FeYlzsiZczzMUeTzb5dWJQ==) on Broadway and 75th near the Beacon Theatre. The link is a little wonky (that's British)  but you can see that they have basic diner food with salads and other options for Kevin.

There is also a place called Utopia (http://www.utopiadiner.com/Location.tpl) on Amsterdam between 72nd and 73rd. The same kind of basic NY Diner food.

I have some errands to run and I must get a haircut but otherwise I'm free from the early afternoon, on. It's easier to reach me on the land line than the cell and I'll pm it to people if you want to call.

See you all in a few hours.

Well, it's time for me to go to bed.  Today will be a busy day.  At 10:00 am, Theater Artists Olympia folk will get together and move some stuff from one of our board member's garage into another space.  We've been storing flats and platforms and a bunch of other stuff for several months, ever since we let go of our storage space, but she's moving and can't store the stuff anymore.  We found another space and it requires people to move it, so those who can, will help move it.

We watched JERSEY BOYS last night.

Enjoyed it, particularly the ending number.

My only issue was that, in the 3rd act, the story lost its momentum.  It became Frankie Valli's story, whereas up to that point it had been the story of the group.

The scenes with the daughter could and should have been eliminated.

I just printed out a $25 coupon for the ICON "HighRise Parking" on 71st Street, and, as backup, $25 coupons for others on 68th and 66th Streets -- a fact which should be of interest to no one, except perhaps Vixmom who is probably parking elsewhere this time but who, like me, is only too happy to follow Other People's Parking Exploits.

Also, it was a post.  So what the hey.

Good morning, all! I slept late. I've been very tired lately.

Now that I am up and moving, I have various and sundry things to accomplish, mostly work on Paint Your Wagon and a vocal score for Jerome Moross' Civil War musical Gentlemen Be Seated.  i'm happy the Moross work came through since i hope it will help to pay my way through Christmas.

I've also decided to put up on eBay some expensive books I own and hope they sell at a good price. I hate to do it, but I've got to survive until some good paying work comes in.

I am going to go to the Healthcare.gov site to see what I can get for 2015.  I got a letter that told me my premium would go up about $48 per month, which makes it higher than my subsidy, so I'm going to get another policy that will be under my subsidy total.

I can only get the coverage until the end of August when I become Jrand65 and become eligible for Medicare, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Don't know who's planning on dinner tonight/late afternoon but I think it's Ginny, Richard, Deb, Kevin and me. Is there anyone else? Larry are you coming for dinner or just the show? Fred are you coming for dinner or you will just be there for the 9pm show?

If we do dinner I suggest sometime around 4:30 (4pm if we go to Arties on 83rd). 4:30 will give us plenty of time to eat, socialize and then get to 72nd by 6:30 ish so we can get settled for the show.

If we don't do dinner and just meet at the theatre at 6:30, that's fine too. I'm just throwing out suggestions.

Last night, I ushered a production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Excellent. Great performance from the guy playing George. The Martha was distractingly wigged to look like Liz Taylor, but not in the move of Virginia Woolf.

Only about 100 people showed up, including about 30 students, but they were quiet and attentive throughout the long three hours of the show.

I am now enrolled for 2015....for some reason even though I only worked six months this year instead of twelve, my subsidy decreased by almost $80 per month.  My new plan has a much higher deductible.....and the co-pays are a bit more.....but it's FREE for me....the best one that is available to me....so I enrolled.

I caught lots of national tours in Cincinnati, and I remember most, but not all, fondly: I was not crazy about Channing in the pre-Broadway Lorelei but i remember very well Camelot, with Arthur Treacher as Pellinore, Hello Dolly! with a radiant Mary Martin, No No Nanette, The Sound of Music, Cabaret, Godspell and The Magic Show, which I adored, as well as the Lincoln Center tours of Carousel with John Raitt and Susan Watson, and Kismet with Alfred Drake and Anne Jeffreys.  Some tours, like Man of La Mancha and 1776 didn't hold a candle to their Broadway productions at all.

My first "Broadway" show was still off-Broadway at Union Square in 1966, the original production of Man of La Mancha on Dec. 26, 1966.  I remember it vividly. Since then, I've seen the good, bad and ugly on and off Broadway. And missed several that I wished I'd seen as well!

Oh....one more touring show MASTER CLASS with Miss Faye Dunaway.....which was delayed 45 minutes because she had forgotten she fired her hair dresser in Cincinnati, and they had to find someone to come in and do her coiffure.

But she WAS fantastic in the show.....the next day she went on local television and said the delay was due to the crew working on the spot light......

I went to the library this morning.  The parking was really bad as it is in the same parking lot as the indoor skating rink and pool.  Super crowded. And it was so cold.  I wish they had parking spots just for the library. There are eight 30 minute parking spots right at the front. But they were all full today. :(

Brrr it is super cold out today!

OK. 4:15 in front of Utopia on Amsterdam between 72nd and 73rd. I don't have Deb's cell phone number so if someone who has it could call her and tell her the dinner plans then we are all connected.

Speaking of show sthat aren;t the same as Broadway, they're doing a scaled-down CAMELOT at regional theaters now.  It's lovingly being called Cam-e-Little.

Better than what we called it when I did the show way, way back in 1975. We lovingly called it Camelsnot.

Although I enjoyed LE MIZ, I  am not sure I could sit thru the show again.  I would much rather put on the CD, sit back in the recliner,  and daydream my way thru the score.  Still, I really enjoyed the 10th Anniversary Concert; the 25th and 50th, not so much.

My AARP Medicare supplement is going to increase by $55.00 a month starting in January.  Thisi s in addition to the  money they automatically take out of my SS check each month.  I was told that the $55.00 will have to paid out of pocket.  I don't really understand any of it, but all of the sources I have checked assure me that this is about hte same for everyone.  Still, it is a lot cheaper than the $700.00+ I was paying for the two years of COBRA coverage.

But if the cast is perfect, those three hours can really fly by.

Pamela Reed just did Martha at the Seattle Rep.  She is now doing VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE at Seattle's ACT Theatre.  She has gotten raves for both shows.

Just put on a Streisand album (or BB) and you will be fine.

I'm not sure how  to take that, TCB!

I hope you take it with a smile, Kevin.  That is the way I meant it.

No, dear Ben I don't overreact much, I really don't, no, I really don't.  I posted that yesterday's and today's fruit was really bad - I bought it in NY.  Perhaps it's not a good time for fruit in NY these past two days.  I have also had bad fruit in LA and I've posted about it.  Are you really taking this as a personal affront to the fruit of New York?  Normally I enjoy the fruit of New York, but not today and not yesterday.  I would say if there's any overreacting going on it ain't coming from my direction.  Not to mention the "deal with it" attitude.  Don't get it, don't understand it, and will now forget about it.

I've shaved, will relax another fifteen minutes and then shower.  At four or thereabouts I'll mosey on over to The Triad and finally see the layout of the room and the stage, chat with our sound and light guy, and then sound check at around five-fifteen.  I gather they open the doors around six-thirty for the seven show.  Really hoping we get people just showing up, but it does look like we're getting up to around sixty for the early show.

Excellent! That is fifty more than I was afraid would be there. I was there for Jacques Brel about two or three years ago and "Just Good Friends" performed there when it was Palssons around 1982, but i have no memory or conception of how many the place holds.

Larry, you may want to call the ER and tell them your symptoms. I don't know if they could do anything more for you than your doc--or just how urgent this is--but if it was me I'd be worried. I've heard of people calling 911, then when the paramedics arrive they let them decide if it warrants an ER visit. Patients cannot be expected to make that determination in all cases.

Do not assume that, Sing. I know I'm not the only one on earth who doesn't do FB. Of course, the other two may be at tonight's events.

Cilla, didn't you post recently that bought a new coat? How nice. What's it like? I saw a puff jacket online the other day that I liked. I didn't think I needed another jacket, but ordered it, anyway. I don't have much occasion to wear such things, but we do--very infrequently--have a bit of rain. That's my rationale.

This should be a link to the coat. I upsized and got it with lots of room.  I'm still very comfortable with layers underneath, something that doesn't happen when I buy the "right" size.   I should have done that years ago

But if the cast is perfect, those three hours can really fly by.

Pamela Reed just did Martha at the Seattle Rep.  She is now doing VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE at Seattle's ACT Theatre.  She has gotten raves for both shows.

I was just thinking of Pamela Reed this morning. There's a woman in my Viennese Waltz class who looks enough like her to be her sister.

Loved Reed in an old sitcom called "Grand" that was yanked before its time.

Today's move of Theater Artists Olympia's stuff went quite well and didn't take as long as I thought it might.  I got some good reading in, and now I need to take a shower, get dressed to usher for The Comic Strippers (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2014/11/15/the-comic-strippers.html), then pick up my friend from the airport right after the performance.  Hopefully, she won't have to wait too long, but it'll take me as long as it takes me to get to the airport, which is 54 miles north of where I am now. :-\

Well I dislike snow, so I did find it odd that you would be happy to see it.  There may be a bit of snow here tomorrow (when i checked earlier it said less than 1 cm). i am not too worried about that, but I think there could be more on monday which i really do not want. Maybe you can take my snow. :)

I guess I had better get out my winter boots.  I will stick with shoes until there is snow.

I told Joseph E. Levine that I had a contract to do the movie with another producer-director, and he said "I piss on this contract.....I piss on that movie....and I piss on you."

Then she tells the story of how the movie was made....and the chapter closes as she writes:

She forgot the audience.....

And I am home from a wonderful show. It was quite a wonderful evening and BK was a charming, funny host, just the kind you want because you know that with him as a guide the journey will be fun, a little crazy perhaps, and full of heart. The artists were delightful and the evening was filled with wonderful performances.  My friend Dan Callaway, whom I've known since he was in the Encores! production of WHERE'S CHARLEY, was quite demented with his song from THE JUNGLE BOOK and really heartbreaking in his song from BUSKER ALLEY. I loved Richard Sherman's performances of "Chim Chim Chirree" and "Feed the Birds," and he and our mighty host sang their delightful "Two Roads," another highlight.  It was all quite delightful, and I wish you all could have been there.

I got to see my friend Chris Denny who was the MD, after the show and my friend the great Marni Nixon, whom I'd not seen since a bus ride n the 104 bus about 18 months ago. I also got to meet two friends of our DR ChasSmith, Chrissie and her husband Nathan, who were quite delightful. I'm ready for tomorrow's event. I think it's going to be good!

Pictures were taken but not by me so I have nothing to post, picture-wise. Those will come from Vixmom and possibly others.

After the show we spent about 10 minutes outside talking to the lovely Miss Marni Nixon (a dear friend of Larry's). She, too, is a treasure.

There is a great idea.  Get Miss Marni Nixon to record "TWO ROADS."

How cool is that.  You goto see Bruce's show, you get to see the legendary Richard Sherman sing two of his most famous songs from MARY POPPINS, and on the way out the door you get to meet a second legend, Miss Marni Nixon.

Back from two wonderful shows.  There were some terrific singers.  I especially liked Sarah Uriarte Berry and Madison (don't know her last name).  It was so great hearing Richard Sherman sing and play the piano.  He and BK were great on "Two Roads."  Mr. Sherman was so nice to sign my Mary Poppins and Sherman Brothers CDs.

The second show also had a really nice turnout, though I don't know how many exactly, BK probably has the actual numbers.

Indeed.  The evening was a complete delight, and many of you have beat me to saying all the positive things I would say myself.

Richard Sherman is nothing less than a national treasure, and this show is such a wonderful tribute.

Loved BK's patter, and the duet with Hadley Miller was one of highlights of the evening.

I'll have much more to say, as I catch my breath!

Hi Jeanne!  I had a post saying "Boo" or whatever to my happy snow post on facebook. So I announce that I was deleting all negative posts about the snow.  I immediately got another negative post from the same person, lol.  I deleted it

I will stick with snows until there is snow.

This isn't aimed at you personally and I understand that others don't feel the way I do, but winter is my favorite season and summer is my least favorite.  Every year I am so happy that it snows and if I say that, people start telling me no it's bad and going off on some rant against winter.  I am tired of it and I'm not going to put up with it on my facebook page. I am also going to stop being quiet about liking winter.  I've started telling anyone who grouses about it in an elevator or walking down the halls in our building or wherever that it's my favorite season and I really don't want to hear their complaints.  Of course, they can still complain, I just don't want to listen to it.

I'm with DR Cillaliz on this! Give me snow and slush over heat and humidity any time.

:)

Jennifer, I agree with Cilla.  My favorite season is Autumn, but I love snow.  I would love it if we could have a white Christmas.

Maybe people who have mild winters and not a lot of snow want snow.  It gets cold here and we have way too much snow so I am in no hurry for it.  I am really hoping that we don't get snow till at least December.

LOL Jennifer, I've never heard an Iowa winter called mild. It's going to be 7 degrees tonight with a 35 mph wind.  It's ok if you don't like winter...there are many folks who agree with you about that  :)

Kevin, FJL and I stayed for teh second show which was just as much fun as the first

It would be so hard for me to choose  a favorite it was all so good but Dan Halloway's "I Wanna Be Liek You" had a us all rolling with laughter and the I was blown away by the talent of all three of the girls

I found it hard to believe that the same little girl that played her Mary Poppins album over and over and over was sitting there watching and listening Richard Sherman (his very self!) singing "Feed The Birds"

and then I was allowed to shake his hand  and have my pitcher took with  him as well!

And I also was able to meet the amazing Marni Nixon---
