HOT HEAT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were too darn hot, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently suffering from hot heat prostration.

Topic of the Day:  Hmmm...the most luxurious thing I've ever treated myself to?  I don't know if I've ever gotten anything that's really "luxurious."  My car was the most expensive thing I've ever gotten myself, but that's not luxurious...especially being just a Ford Escort. ::) I'll definitely have to think about that for a while.

BK, I'm really getting excited about the "Deceit" DVD!

Is there anything that can be done to FESTINATE the release?? ;)

TOD: My binoculars. They are not the best (those would cost over $1000), but they are nice ones.

Hmmm, have to think about that. I guess trips to Europe are luxuries so our trips to England and Ireland and Wales could be considered.

I must pick up the pace on the AT&T Foundation. We are behind schedule at work and I need to push through as much work as possible before we start overtime (in August) or I will be working even more OT. It's nice for the bank account but tiresome in every other aspect.

Good morning, all!  For some reason, I misread my alarm and got up an hour earlier.  I'm about to leave for hospital, hoping my edad will be coming back with me.

My sister-in-law has headed for Indiana to check on her camper - after all the rain they're concerned about damage - and my brother will join her tomoorow for the weekend, leaving me and the dogs to deal with the noisy ghosts.  My nephew Matt will most likely be in and out; he's a party boy.  I tried to fix him up with one of the cute nurses he'd been checking out, but I think the moment has passed.

DR Jose, tell us more about freaking out.

TOD:  either the 2-volume Musical Theatre book by Richard Norton or the critical edition of the score to BORIS GUDONOV.  Both cost quite a bit and were worth every penny.  Now I want to start buying the complete set of the new Kurt Weill Edition.

I can't think of much that I consider "luxury" items.  I've never been all that material.

Mind, I really like my stove.  But that's something der B bought for me, not something I bought myself.

I think the hot heat is getting to the cats.  Walty lunged at and attacked Killbot right in front of us as Rodzinski was getting ready to go to work.  He kept hissing and growling after we separated them and then cried after we put him in the guest room.  Things seem to be okay with them now.  They are now engaged in a pattern of cautiously sniffing each other and then moving away to sit close by.  I think that means all is well, but just in case I'm going to work out at home today instead of leaving them together right now.

TOD: Does quitting my job so that I could be a full-time student count? It certainly felt like a luxury to be able to focus primarily on school- in spite of the fact that it ate up all of my savings.

I also purchased a dress once that I had seen in a window many times and loved.  I bought it to wear to a series of weddings that we were attending that summer.  While it wasn't outrageously priced, it is defintely one of the most expensive if not the most expensive article's of clothing I've ever purchased.  But I love it and it makes me feel great when I wear it.

TOD: I took myself to Hawaii when I was 25.

I treated myself to some very nice restaurants and loungeed in the beautiful aqua waters and scantily clad, muscular men brought me exotic drinks while I floated in the water.

I cannot remember why I came back

When Vixdad and I got married we didn;t have time for a long honeymoon as his out of country relatives planned their trips to arrive a week before the wedding and  their departutre wasn't unti two days after the wedding... so we took our 2 weeks vacations to coincide with their visits and  just took a Wed - Sun stay in the Pennsylvania Poconos yes we stayed inthe Champagne Towers!

http://www.poconovacations.com/Accommodations/Resorts/CaesarsParadiseStream/index.aspx#story

A fireplace, a hot tub, a sauna, a double shower that doubled as a steam room , a massage table, and a swimming pool all in your own room

and they delivered breakfast to your door!

It may be "hokey" but it was fun!!!!

TOD:  Does making a charitable donation that allows you access to great theater tickets count as a luxury?  I'd say using the Broadway Cares and Actors Fund programs that got truly great tickets for otherwise impossible-to-get shows is the most luxurious treat I've given myself (or ourselves), as well as "overpaying" for some of the Actors Fund and Broadway Cares benefit performances.

Most luxurious hotel backfired a little.  We stayed at the pricy Dolphin Hotel at Disney World, expecting a fair amount of luxury and service.  But what became clear was that as far as the hotel staff was concerned, this was just their job, and everybody at the hotel was paying exorbitant prices so the treatment by the staff was only so-so.  Still, the hotel was ideally located for what we wanted to do, but definitely a waste of money.

On the other hand, the Polynesian Resort at Disney World, which cost a bit less, was just sumptuous and the height of vacation euphoria, but I gather we got an upgrade on that room, in part because we came at an off-time.

Thursday morning greetings!  Sorry I left so abrubtly last night - while Richard and I were watching The Incredibles, we had an incredible thunderstorm during which I disconnected my computer.

TOD: Does quitting my job so that I could be a full-time student count?

Hope so, DR TPunk, 'cause my answer was going to be the time I spent as a (mostly) stay-at-home mom from 1985-1997. Walking away from a well-paying administrative job with associate professor rank totally changed my career trajectory, set me back about 7 years in the state retirement system, and took a huge chunk out of my earning potential.  Many people thought I was committing career suicide, but during those years I got to do some free-lance and volunteer things that never would have been possible had I been working full time.  I have never regretted a minute of those 12 years and often miss the unstructured puttering time that was plentiful then.

On a more tangible note, I love buying Longaberger baskets, Vera Bradley handbags & accessories, and Apple computers (I think Richard and I are going to get an iBook this weekend).

GRRRRRRRRRRR computer problems AGAIN this morning.

Oh well.

Since I was small and played Monopoly many times, I discovered that there was a  $75 tax on Luxury, I have avoided it.

Good morning!

Beautiful, hot day here with more to come. I don't think there is any more rain in the forecast, at least for now. Good! I've got to get out and mow that grass at some point in the next few days. Did not get around to it yesterday.

I'm thinking of going to see X-MEN 3 this afternoon. It has finally come to the movie theater just a few blocks from the house, so I have no excuse now for not going to see it since I want to see it on the big screen.

I'm having lunch with friends today and will go after we finish (3:40 show) unless the lkunch runs long and I can't get there in time.

I think the must luxurious thing I've treated myself to was the latest HDTV I bought last year. I didn't need a new TV. I had a HDTV that was working just fine, but the new one offered a bigger picture, more inputs, and I talked myself into buying it. Haven't regretted it either as the picture is sharper and with more accurate color decoding than the last HDTV I had.

There are specials coming on various channels tonight I will be recording for later viewing. The SUPERMAN documentary (LOOK UP IN THE SKY) that bk watched on DVD a few weeks ago is being shown again tonight on A&E (and next week on The History Channel). I didn't catch it the last time it aired on A&E, so I want to see it tonight.

HBO has a special called BOFFO about the surprising hits and flops of the movie business that also sounds interesting.

Mawnin', y'all!

Most luxurious thing I've ever done for myself... stayed in showbiz, in spite of low earnings, unemployment, no insurance, no kids, no home, etc. The trade0off's leave no regrets - I've had lots of free time, when i DO work it's incredibly uplifting, satisfying, fulfilling; my colleagues are Artists; my family respects and enjoys what I do; my friends have always shown support and love - whatta wonderful life! That's a luxury that many people have told me they covet - and some "civilian" friends have taken my example, and just dropped out of society to live a simple and satisfying existence, doing Summer Vacation the rest of their lives.

AND - years ago my parents gave me a pearl necklace as a birthday gift. Well, I lost it - right off my neck - one night when I wore it to the theatah. I never told them I lost it. And I grieved. Often. So, recently, after they died, I bought myself a pearl necklace just like the one they had given me, to replace it! Very expensive - the most extravagant gift I have ever given myself - but, actually, it was THEIR money... THEY replaced it, after death. I take it out and look at it, touch it, wear it whenever the occasion allows - which, sometimes, is when I'm sitting at my desk, writing!!!

Lovely stories, DR PennyO.  Isn't it interesting that several of us have found luxury in lifestyle choices?
