And I finished my afternoon with the documentary CLEOPATRA: THE EPIC THAT CHANGED HOLLYWOOD. Watching this very informative documentary made me want to see the film again, particularly the second half which is my least favorite part of the film, but one maybe I might like more now. At some point over the next few days, I will watch the "Antony and Cleopatra" section of the film (on disc 2 in the set).

Are we talking about the Liz Taylor version of CLEOPATRA?  I really enjoyed that film, even though I had planned to hate it.

Some days ago, in my hometown (Southwest of France near the city of Cognac) I went to listen to.... believe it or not, a French Barebershop Quartet.

Of course, the theater has no air conditioning system and, being a sweltering night, it was quite a task for both the audience and the performers...

They sing in French and in English; at one moment, we were asked to guess the song: I have to humbly say that I was the only one to recognize the Vultures' Song from the Jungle Book, "We're Your Friends!"

Anyway, here's a pic of the group! Don't ask me why they dress that way! So strange and unBarbershoppy!

http://bluefish-art.com/html/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=2

Also, here's a little write-up about them I found on some site:

"The name ot the quartet is "The french Barber Shop Quartet". We sing a few barber shop songs in English and many humoristic songs in English too, and still with the Barber Shop harmony. We sing 3 or 4 songs in French to remain exotic. Cécile is a lyric singer, she sang in many operas and she is soprano. Isabelle is ajazz singer, she has sung in many clubs. She is alto. Bertrand is also a jazz singer, and he imitates many instruments with his voice. He's also an actor and he is the funny guy. Bruno is the leader of the band, he plays many instruments (clarinet, flute, guitar, banjo...). He sings the tenor part and he's the one who speaks to introduce the songs. He speaks English. The band is professional and plays everywhere in France: festivals, theaters, open space etc.. They begin to get famous because of the qualities of the voices but also because it's a real show they're providing. It all began eight years ago when four friends who were singers as well discovered the Barber Shop style(which is unknown in France) and decided to sing it for their own pleasure. To sing in America with real barber shop quartets is the top of our careers."

Hope you'll enjoy reading about a little bit of Americana direct from France!

I really must get going on dinner.  I've a chicken to prep, and a pasta dish to try out.

Thank you!

I forgot to mention that this singing group is going to perform in the US of A from October 19 through Oct. 30; Chicago then Wisconsin, Minnesota...

OKAY FOLKS, GIVE THE LOVELY LADY A HAND!

NY Timesder Brucer

::exits singing::

I hold your hand in mine, dear,
I press it to my lips.
I take a healthy bite
From your dainty fingertips.

My joy would be complete, dear,
If you were only here,
But still I keep your hand
As a precious souvenir.

The night you died I cut it off.
I really don't know why.
For now each time I kiss it
I get bloodstains on my tie.

I'm sorry now I killed you,
For our love was something fine,
And till they come to get me
I shall hold your hand in mine.

(Tom Lehrer)

Wow, did they say a nude juice bar!?

From Jose:

DR Jane - I hope your back pain abates soon.

Now... Is changing the sheets really easier than making the bed?  Hmm.... Getting those fitted sheets back on takes some effort.

Thanks, my back is improving.  In fact I was fine until this afternoon.

As for the sheets, in this case it really was easier-much easier to put nicely folded sheets on the bed than try to unravel the mess I made out of the top sheet. ;D

Cillaliz-I’ve enjoyed all the cat stories.  I hope you can substitute more cute stories for the naughty cat ones.
As for sharing the little hotel room in NY, you will need an air mattress.

Ben-the Oregon coast is very nice.

Elmore, any special treats you can take your Dad again so he will eat?

Jennifer I bet you loved having the kiddies cuddling with you.:D

Danise-they sure go back to school early in Florida.

In Dayton, OH, too, DR Jane.  I heard on the radio this morning that Dayton Public Schools start on Monday, August 7.  DH Richard, a retired teacher, says the districts are starting earlier and earlier to provide more time for preparation for the standardized tests.

Tomovoz-It’s possible we won’t feel comfortable taking our new puppy to Portland in October.  If that is the case Keith won’t get to meet you and Colin (I’ll still go, to Portland or Tacoma).  At least he got to meet MBarnum Sunday.

Colleges in this area start on August 21... It has been a warm summer and some of the buildings and dorms are going to be ghastly hot.

I think we can get the puppy around September 16.  It's going to be very hard to leave home & go back east on Oct. 1st. :'(

Had some good experiences with TV shows tonight.

I began the viewing evening with SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW on Showtime-HD. Because of the computer generated world that this takes place in, I didn't find the HD version any more effective than the standard definition version (which Showtime is showing letterboxed on others of its channels). Some of the movie is fun but much of it still irritates me. Occasionally, a film will grow on me if I see it a few times. (NASHVILLE did.) This one hasn't improved with multiple viewings. I doubt I'll watch it again.
