Very well, then, the notes have been read and so, if you're game, let the posting begin.

This is a posting frenzy?  I see perusers but not posters and certainly no frenzy.  Yawn.

Well, it's now 3:45AM EST... and I'm still up...

As for Shire songs... There's not much Shire I don't like - at least Maltby & Shire wise.  I'd have to do some research to see which Shire only stuff I like, but in the meantime...The three biggies: Starting Here, Starting, Now; Baby; and Closer Than Ever.  I also like big... although, after going through some of the cut material from that show... I'm glad it was cut.  -Although, some of the "old" stuff got put back in...???  "I Wanna Gonna Home", "Stop, Time", and "Now I Want To Know" are standouts for me in that score.  "I Think I May Want to Remember" (please don't bring this in for auditions, most audition pianos don't "play" well enough for the repeated note figures - even if the audition pianist can), "I Don't Remember Christmas", "I Chose Right", "If I Sing", and, of course, "The Story Goes On" (gotta love Liz Callaway).  *And as for Closer Than Ever - that's a HARD book to play; and over the course of an evening, it's not only a technical challenge, but an endurance one as well.  Patrick Scott Brady awes me!

As for another topic...

Since we're due for some more snow today here in the DC metro area....

What are your favorite snow/winter songs?

And on another topic...

Thanks George. I have had a great day indeed. The last hour has been one of unexpected phone calls. My nephew in Queensland rang  and a friend that I have known for over 40 years but rarely see. Still nearly 4 hours to go of the day here.
I don't really know much of the work of Mr Shire but shall of course check on what I do have before I make an ass out of myself and write the wrong songs down.

The first thing I think of now with "Shire" is hobbits!
I did see a production of "Baby" which I quite enjoyed. I enjoy the OBC recording of "Big". "I Don't Remember Christmas" is a favourite as of course is the wonderful "Autumn".

First off...
The very happiest of birthdays to you, Tom!!!

Would have been here to join the festivities earlier, but I had a lengthy phone conversation with my very own sister, so that was nice.

The birthday boy said...
Quote
Copiers are such friendly animals Ann. They should be sung to to encourage their reproduction system to go into action.

Funny, the same thing works on me. :D

Now that is funny Jed. Hope there is someone there to pick up on the idea. Just had a phone call from my little brother - lives about 4 hours away. Earlier I had a call from my older brother who lives about 8 hours away in the other direction. (They don't really know each other at all!) Strange to hear from my relatives in a way. Two phone calls from natural brothers who I have only known for a little over a decade. It's a good feeling to be thought of as "family". Thanks for your Birthday greetings Jed and you have no fear - I know the boundaries - I won't sing to you!

Seems I'm more enthusiastic about Shire than any composer currently writing.  I thought of him yesterday when, during the discussion of some less grand composer, Shire's I'll Never Say Goodbye was mentioned.

DW Joy and I are the only ones we know who are very fond of Like a Baby.

Back when we were considering our favorite BK-tracks, I was thinking of Stop Time sung by Liz Callaway.

I think I Chose Right is the best love song to hit Broadway in the past 20 years.  And Miss Byrd?  I know of no better song written since.  But Travel could be my favorite.

OK, so I'm unable to be very selective here:

Crossword puzzle
I don't remember christmas
I hear bells
One step
I'll Never Say Goodbye
What could be better?
I want it all
The ladies singing their song
And what if we had loved like that?
What Am I doin'?
One of the good guys
Fathers of fathers
It's never that easy/I've been here before
Dancing All the Time
Coffee, Black

It amazes me that Autumn was written for a colelge musical (it has a nun choral background).  A song I wrote for a college musical has the same plot as She Loves Me Not.
I know it seems like a long list, but I'm sure I've left out many.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :D ;D

TCB,you really crack me up.  I can't wait to meet you sometime.

Jose:  You sound so cuddly in your boxer briefs and sweats.  I'd go on, but I'm told this a family site.  I hate it when they have NO DANCING AISLES in stores.

Jed:  No pics of you in the purple tights yet?  Are they still holding up under the massive power of your thunder thighs? ;)

I Don't Remember Christmas is a favorite.

Her Laughter in My Life is a fave too (but only sung by Guy Haines-- after all that is the song where Guy pulled a Shirley MacLaine and was intoduced to the world)

I like Miss Byrd too

Yesterday, I got stung by a bee, and thoughts of bright copper kettles and whiskers on kittens did not help one bit!!!!!!  My hand is still swollen.   Brown paper packages tied up with string, my ass!!!   TCB, don't you DARE touch that line!!!!

Favorite Maltby/Shire: unquestionably "Starting Here, Starting Now" as sung by Barbra Streisand in COLOR ME BARBRA.

But I like many of their songs from their revues and from BABY. I haven't listened to BIG enough to have a feel for the music. Sounds like something I should break out and listen to this week some time.

My favorite Maltby Shire song is The Story Goes On sung by Liz Callaway. I have to agree with Matt that Streisand's Starting Here, Starting Now is also gorgeous. The comedic song Miss Byrd done by Sally Mayes is priceless. You have to see her perform it to get all the humor of the song.
