I'm back from my first part of the day, and now I have a bit of work to do. While I edited this morning, I listened to SIMPLY SONDHEIM; I know a couple of people on the recording through San Francisco's 42nd Street Moon Company, so I won't say much about the recording. I would have killed to see the great Guy Haines' number because of the laughs and I get great pleasure from Mr Haines' way with a musical phrase and a lyric. Unfortunately, I think there are several voices I didn't particularly enjoy hearing on the recording, one of them being the producer of the event. I do like Steve Rhyne's voice and the young lady who sang "I Remember," and I really enjoyed the band.

May I vent? ...I was working away writing and received an e-mail with the title line "Urgent prayer request"... Didn't recognize the sender, but opened it anyway, thinking I'd better check it out in case it was someone I knew writing from another address. I, too, found a couple of the voices marginal (at best).

Is the young lady who sings "Back in Business" also the tap dancer in that number?

The show seems to end somewhat abruptly and not with a bang.

Had a smashing good time with the video viewing this afternoon.

I began with SHANGHAI EXPRESS. I hadn't seen this in years, and what astonished me was how wonderful the laserdisc looked. I was expecting lots of dirt and spotting and garbage, but it looks like Universal took some pains with this release all those years ago and did a good job with it.

Dietrich, of course, was stunning looking, probably the movie where her glamour and allure are at their zenith (it was certainly the biggest hit of her Von Sternberg films). Clive Brook has the physique for the male lead but what a sad sack he is! I don't think he cracks a smile during the entire film. But what a grand adventure of the old school!

Next came EASY TO LOVE. I sure DR JRand would enjoy seeing Carroll Baker's first film (wasn't it?) No doubt you have it already.

The Technicolor was very rich in this film, and the print TCM broadcast looked grand. I wonder if this one isn't going to be part of the Esther WIlliams DVD boxed set due next year. It looks like it's been remastered for such a release.

Then I watched the first of the two Katharine Hepburn-Dick Cavett interviews. Both of them were nervous as could be at the start of the interview. Finally, once they got into their rhythm, the conversation flowed beautifully, and I remember at the time being so entranced with her stories, the first time I had heard most of them. Subsequent biographies both in print and on video have covered the ground she covers over and over again, but it was revelatory at the time, for me anyway.

BTW, what she's there to publicize was the American Film Theatre and her film of A DELICATE BALANCE. I had forgotten about all of that. She gave an interview with 60 MINUTES and Morley Safer when she was drumming up an audience for THE CORN IS GREEN.
