I guess the upside of being self-employed, which balances out the lack of benefits, is that I don't have to cover for someone when they're sick.

I remember some MAD parodies:

Valley of the Dollars

The Cute Rook - in the next issue they had to explain it was a parody of THE HOT ROCK

The Honey West parody...."Thirty Minutes to Kill"....which it turns out is what ABC had when it ordered up the series.

The ad parodies.

What me worry?

MattH:  you guessed it--"The Caribbean Mystery," shot entirely in sunny Santa Barbara.  ;)

Sick kids:  Well as someone with two younger children and also someone who teaches in both the public school and private school arenas, many times to snotty-nosed kids who are walking TB wards (so to speak), I must say I congratulate parents who keep their kids home when they're ill.  And when the kids are as young as mine, they don't get to stay "home alone."

I'll have to confess

I guess

I'm an "ornament" junkie.

And this pomegranate ornament was (box of 6) what put me over the edge and induced seasonal spirit:

That's definitely seasonal spirit inducing! ;D

I really enjoyed being self employed. I am much happier when I work for myself. I have toyed with going back to it often, but financially it makes sense for me to stay put.

I looked out the bedroom window, and this is what I saw:

Actually, he was sitting on the ground atop a grey bundle which turned out to be one of my squirrels!

The red-tailed hawk just sat there for about fifteen minutes; I tried to sneak outside and get a picture, but the Mail Man's truck scared him away. The Mail Man said he saw the hawk with prey in hand claws winging it back into the marsh.

I wish they'd do this Circle of Life bit somewhere else!

I've survived lunch.  It was some Vietnamese concoction...Guon Cha or something...chicken and imperial rolls over vermicelli in a bowl (with salad on the bottom!).  Yummy and nummy at the same time.

I've settled on taking Monday off.  Most of my co-workers will be out in the afternoon getting a look at an office furniture showroom and new product.

I don't "do" furniture.  I could have gone, but I'd rather BE gone.

I've checked tracking on my Ultimate Superman boxed set and UPS claims it's "out for delivery."

Sure hope it gets here today (they've missed a few times).

Yes, it was the same in teaching, too. Single teachers were always expected to chaparone dances and school trips at night since we didn't have families of our own to go home to. FOr the first few years of teaching, I let them take advantage of me over and above the call of duty, but after about five years, when I had a home and a partner, I made sure it was understood that I was NOT available for any after school activities that other folks didn't have to attend.

Mail delivery was late this afternoon, and when it finally arrived, I was disappointed that my amazon order wasn't there. I got the shipping notice on Monday morning, so I hoped it would get here today. No such luck. Maybe tomorrow.

Next week, we have those four collections of Disney True-Life Adventures coming out. My bank account is already yelping in pain, but I've loved those features and featurettes all my life, so I had to have these.

Charlie Chan Volume 2 is also out next week.

"No" has become one of my favorite words over the past year.

People still "take advantage" of me in ways that don't necessarily bother/trouble me, but in ways that occasionally irritate me.

They just assume that, because I love to cook, I will prepare a food for some function or other...sufficient to feed 20 people or 40 people.

Usually, I don't mind at all.  But when they'd rather hand it over to me EVERY TIME rather than solicit other "volunteers", I find that "No, thanks, I'm doing something else that day!" works very well.

I started this afternoon with VERONICA MARS. My local CW affiliate for some reason did not pick up the high def version of the show, so I had to settle for the standard version they showed and had to manipulate the aspect ratio of my set so the picture wouldn't be distorted. Weird.

Anyway, the solution of the rapist mystery was quite good and had me completely fooled. I had gone in another direction entirely (the professor's assistant was my guess). And the new murder mystery set up last night was also a great way to begin the next mystery arc on the show. The victim was REALLY a surprise! I thouoght for sure it would be either the dean's wife or the professor.

I used to "decorate" our common areas in our division for the holidays.

It was always something tasteful...a touch here, a dab there.  Color, some sparkle, and every year it was different.

Last year, a newer co-worker, who had really loved what I'd done the year before, decided she wanted to do the decorating.

Fine by me.

Trouble is, when she brought everything in, she expected me to drop everything and assist her in her grand scheme.

I asked her if she remembered how much help I requested the year before.  She admitted she didn't recall me asking for help.

And that's when I told her I didn't expect to "help" her.  If she has a vision, she can put it out there.  I used to come in over a weekend to decorate.  She wanted to do it during the work day (we can finish in an hour if you help).

No.

I don't mind someone else doing it.  When I was doing the decorating, it was because nothing was being done by anyone else.  If someone else wants to do it, though, I want them to do it.

Next was HOUSE with some really surprising developments amid the story of a child with mysterious ailments that seemed to get worse every time they tried to do something that should have been positive for her.

I really have no idea where the frame story of House's drug addiction is going at all.

In real life, Dr. House would more than likely be in a bed with all his limbs fractured.  NOBODY should have to put up with the shit he's been dishing out.

I watched 3 LBS. next. Two stories took up the hour - a woman with a brain aneurysm which could only be operated on with her body cooled and heart stopped for thirty minutes (GREY'S ANATOMY had a similar story last season dealing with the bar owner) and a man with face blindness.

The stories featured OK drama but nothing which makes this show unique or cutting edge, nothing to make it a must-see. I think this may be my last viewing of 3 LBS.

HELP ME HELP YOU had a humorless half hour devoted to a couple of stories: a boxer who didn't have rage in the ring and an Asian girl turned on by Jewish men so she pretended to be Jewish herself. Neither funny, neither interesting. Another show I will drop from my viewing roster.
