Anyone remember MAD's On A Clear Day You Can see a Funny Girl Singing Hello Dolly Forever, with Bubby Strident?

C-O-L-D!

That's what it is here in Oakland CA.

It's currently F 41!!!  High may reach F 55.

Truly C-O-L-D....for Oakland.

Tonight will be colder...around F 36.  Brrrr-r-r-r-r-r-r.

For Oakland, that's an anomaly.

Things are looking up, though.  Temps should increase a couple of degrees through Sunday.

I'm "toying" with taking another day off between now and my vacation (my last work day this year will be Dec. 8th).

I may take either Friday or Monday.

I didn't do much of anything last night (either).  I was so contented sitting by my fire that working up any enthusiasm to watch a DVD was out of the question.

As it happens, I did watch "Friday Night Lights"...and despite the fact that I find Kyle Chandler a very interesting actor (and he has the Texas patois down cold), and despite the fact that the show captures with gritty realism the all-football mentality that besieges the majority of small town residents, I truly don't give a rat's patootie.

Nothing happened in the show at all.  Some character development...some emotional outbursts...some stereotyping of a black player with a drug problem (that's my opinion, the stereotyping bit)...all of it just FILLER to get us to next week's "game" show, I suppose.

YAWN.

I didn't know Frank Loesser wrote a song called Edisaurus  ;)

Do you know one called "Once In Love With Amy"? (Better that than the Pure Prarie League song "Amy" (What you gonna do") which was sung relentlessly to me by friends back in the '70's....)

My cousin said that she fixed her DH a bowl of popcorn and a coke and he was settled in his recliner watching TV when she went to bed. When she got up, he was still in the recliner but had passed on sometime during the night. They were getting ready to celebrate their 40th anniversary. It all seems pretty unreal.

I loved MAD magazine, especially Spy vs. Spy and the musical parodies. I'll have to see if I can find some of these compilations you're talking about. I knew Grant was a huge fan---I think we talked about it at our scoring session.

You didn't read my post correctly, DR Jennifer. What surprised me is that there will be another episode next week.

Ah okay I get it. It's just when you said the ending was a surprise i thought you meant in content.

I think i mentioned on monday morning that this week's show was one of the last few new ones.  I believe there is just one more.  Should be good.

Hmmm, wonder if this could be part of the problem here at work...

One thing that always occurs to me when I read such stories is that since it IS a heavy shopping season, store employees come into contact with many more people and are far busier than normal.   This means the employees are more likely to be more tired/run down during this season than any other.

Add to that the fact that it is now "flu season" and the likelihood of employees becoming sick more frequently is exponentially greater during this shopping season.

Every time I read a story about this it always casts suspicion upon employees....never the more obvious/more likely reason for higher sick day occurrences.

On the other hand, I sympathize with the employers and other employees left "holding the bag" when someone calls in sick.

Yes, it's hard enough doing your job during this season without having to do someone else's, too.  That often leads to resentment toward the absent employee.

And, yes, I agree that there are instances of goldbricking (i.e., calling in sick when you aren't sick at all).

But still...

Don't get me started on THIS subject, DRRLP.  One of the things that annoyed me most was the extra work I as a SINGLE person ended up with when there was "something at school" or there was a "daycare" emergency or one of the kids was sick....  My guess is that was so about 50% of the time.  :P

I went to Tower yesterday. The going out of business sale has been on for quite a while but it's the first time I was able to get there. Well, it's pretty slim pickins'. I did manage to get a copy of Manhattan Transfer Live, the first live album, recorded at the Hammersmith in London in 1978. I had it on cassette and transferred it to CD but since it was on sale for $9 I went for it....

Ben, let me know what you think of the sound quality.  I got that CD also and it seems to have some audio problems that I don't think could be on the original recording.  Something must have happened when they made the CD.  An Internet buddy of mine sent me a copy of the Japanese-only CD release (from several years ago) and it sounds so much better than this US release.

....But maybe whatever I dismantled and put back together in the hallway wasn't a smoke detector because I couldn't find a battery anyway....

....Now, just what did I take apart in the hallway that had no battery?

That kind of sounds like what my sister had in her house (that she just sold).  We couldn't figure out what it was, so she just disconnected it, took it down, put a cover over it and called it good.  We bought some battery-powered smoke detectors from Costco and put them up in the three bedrooms and another in the hall/living room area, but we never could figure out what that other thing was. :-\
