Congrats to DR FJL on winning the Unseemly Trivia Contest and his small gain at the casinos (and all in one day!)

TOD:

Not a huge fan of this genre, but I'll go with:

JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS
CLASH OF THE TITANS

At 6:50 the phone rang and someone said they were looking for All Saints.  I told them they had the wrong number even though I try, Lord knows, I try.

DtM - Thanks for the alert regarding the Atlantic City fire.  I hadn't seen it on the news before you posted, and it was helpful to have known about it in advance.

That's very sharp, considering you were just awakened!  I hope the caller appreciated the humor.   :-\

I have the phone ringer in the bedroom turned off for just such  circumstances.

Congrats to DR FJL on his win in the Unseemly Trivia Contest and to DR DtM who got the correct answer.  I was off on the wrong track in several areas.

Thank you, DR ELmore, for the crash course on all things CANDIDE. One of the things that keeps me coming back to this site is the limitless knowledge of many of the posters here. Simply amazing.

I saw the 1973/74 Broadway version (at the "renovated" Broadway Theater, in fact) and thoroughly enjoyed it even though I knew it wasn't the same as the Barbara Cook cast recording I had.

TOD:

All time favorite of this genre is the Steve Reeves version of THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD. It was made in 1961 and filmed in Cinemascope although all I have is a pan and scan videotape of very inferior quality.

I don't know how many musicians were in the pit for the original production and recording, but the orchestrations for the 73/74 revival are considerably reduced.

I am really looking forward to my series of gay-themed movies recorded off TCM last night. I'll start with STAIRCASE and follow it with Dirk Borgarde's VICTIM.

I still have the remaining 30 minutes or so of SEMPER FI from last night to watch, and being gay-themed, it will fit today's theme just fine.

I also got THE HILL in the mail yesterday, and I hope to get to it at some point this week. Getting several Criterions in the mail this week, though, so they will get top priority.

As for the Topic of the Day...

"Jason and The Argonauts" - is the only one that comes to mind.  However, as DR Pogue mentioned, it is actually almost too good to be considered a S&S flick.

Yes it is already 80 degrees here.

Didn't Steve Reeves and Mickey Hargitay play Ephemera and Detritus?  Or were they in the musical version?

On the phone with Fed Ex Revenue Services.  The overnight package I sent to Miss Emily Skinner for Saturday delivery arrived yesterday.  I called last night and was told that I'd sent it overnight delivery (on Friday) and that it was delivered on time.  I said what was this waybill I had in front of me with SATURDAY DELIVERY clearly checked?  He looked up the waybill and said "Oh."  Then he said that I, in fact, hadn't paid the proper Saturday delivery charge.  I said how is that my problem - I paid what was asked of me and I clearly stated Saturday delivery and even asked the person if I had filled out the waybill correctly for Saturday delivery.  He asked me what he could do to make me happy.  I said refund my dough.  He said I had to call revenue services.  I can see that getting a refund out of Fed Ex for their obvious screw up is not going to be as simple as walking down to the USPS and geting my money back.  If the USPS screws up, you just take your receipt down there and they give you cash on the spot.  Apparently, Fed Ex can't be bothered to do that.  I'm on hold while this person is doing "research."

I've had Duel Of The Titans here for some time (under its original title of Romulus and Remus) and I even began watching it - I'll have to finish it after Rhodes.

And as for Candide...

I happen to like all the versions, warts and revisions and displacements and all.  I do agree with DR elmore that Bernstein's concert/studio recording on DG seems to take itself too seriously.  -And I had always wished for a younger Candide on that recording other than Jerry Hadley, and June Anderson's tone has never sat well on my ears.  But it is nice to have all that music.

And I guess that Barbara Cook does sound "mature" on the 1956 (OCR), even though she was far from "mature" at that time.  -I also love her stories about that whole process, and to think that she was basically just "opening her mouth and letting the notes come out" during "Glitter and Be Gay" since she didn't really know the proper way to let them "fall out".

The woman just confirmed that it was a Fed Ex screw up and that she put in a request for a "credit" because it takes five to seven days for them to get billing info.  I said that if she'd been able to see the waybill (she had, which is how she saw that Saturday delivery was checked) that the billing info was clearly on there.  She said someone would be calling me by July 1st, but if I hadn't heard I was free to call back.  Seems very amateur and like they're hoping I'll forget.  I will not forget.

Hmm...  Here in New York City, at least, I've just taken my copy of the Airbill back down to the office I sent the package from, and they've issued me a credit right there.  -Of course, this was only after I had called Customer Service to make sure that the credit was in their system - they can't seem to take care of those things at the Ship Centers.  ???

bk, I understand your frustration with FED EX, I have also had my share of troubles. Debating whether or not to use regular mail, UPS or FedEx or even DHL to ship some tapes back to a freind.

I've gotten some Craig's List apartment info, but boy are they expensive if you want to stay for five weeks.  However, for short stays, they seem to be MUCH cheaper than hotels, although I have no idea what hotels are going for these days?  Can someone find out, for example, what the Hilton Gardens (where I stayed last time - on Eighth) is going for end of July?

You mean to say that you would not want to stay on DR elmore's fire escape too?

I must be off to cause mischief at work and send pleasant nasty grams to errant and truant patrons with overdue books.

If it is quiet I will sneak in and say hello. Take care one and all and have a very pleasant day!
