DR Ben, well knock me over!  I feel like Lorelei Lee when she first saw that diamond tiara ("I love finding new places to wear diamonds") when I look at those two covers.  I thought I knew everything about Chad Mitchell Trio releases!  I would love tapes, and now we have to get them on CD to complete our collections, dammit!

Since JoseS is about, this is for you, dear:

This is a picture from a Cukraszda
Cukraszda means Cafe where many kinds of pastry are sold as well as ice cream, coffee, and tea. The pastries are AWESOME, and I haven't had better ice cream than in Hungary. You need to find those ecpecially great places for the ice cream, but I garantee that you will keep going back there.

I'm tired; it's early; I didn't get enough sleep.  I want to go back to bed. But i thought i'd say, "Hi" and cheer you all up.   So now you all feel better, meanwhile I want to go back to bed.  Could you all go to work for me and pretend you're me?

Three LPs come to mind instantly, but I'm sure there are scads more once I put my mind to it.

1. TWO'S COMPANY with Bette Davis

2. BRIGADOON studio cast with Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy

3. STARS OF THE SILVER SCREEN 1929-1930. This was an RCA compilation LP of studio recordings by movie stars who were breaking into sound films, so there are people like Gloria Swanson, Lupe Valez, Everett Marshall, Bebe Daniels who sang in early talkies. They aren't soundtrack recordings (which were often interrupted by dialogue), so they're complete renditions of songs, and they're still wonderful.

DRMATTH - I think Two's Company has made a recent appearance on CD!  I am sure someone else can confirm or deny such.

The Chad Mitchell Trio....they made me laugh AND think, sometimes both at the same time.

Well, I know Davis' solo album MISS BETTE DAVIS was recently released on CD, but I haven't seen any release information on TWO'S COMPANY unless it was pressed in England and imported over here.

You're right DRMATTH - I just looked at the cover at Amazon and that is the one I am thinking of.

So - Two's Company is still among the CD missing.

Ah, yes, the Christopher Plummer Cyrano. I have that on vinyl. I remember seeing it at the Guthrie Theatre where it began. I know that by the time it got to NYC it was a completely different show, but I still love the album and the show that I saw in Minneapolis.

I saw it in Toronto (closer to the Minneapolis version) and loved it. Also have it on vinyl and wish it would be released as a CD. The composer Michael J. Lewis wrote the music for the Katharine Hepburn/Yul Brynner Madwoman of Chaillot. Lewis also did the music for Vincent Price's over the top "Theatre of Blood," which, unlike MWOC, I'd really like to see again.

I'd like to see the Lincoln Center 1976 THREEPENNY OPERA on disc as well.

I forgot about this one, too.  The one unfortunate thing about a CD release for this recording would be another case of marvelous cover art being reduced to a size where it's not as appreciatable.

Speaking of Vincent Price, are there any Dr. Phibes fans here?

http://eurekatreasures.com/rare2.htm

(it doesn't seem to work with www - use the http//)

This site lists OCRs that have not been released on CD. It may not be up to the minute, but it reminded me that I'd like to see the following:

Mexican Hay Ride
Hazel Flagg
Spoon River Anthology
Secret Life of Walter Mitty
A Time for Singing
The Mad Show

(as well as the already mentioned Cyrano, In Circles, and New Faces of 1956 & 1968)

I can very happily do without Let It Ride.

As they sing in "I, Jupiter" in Out of This World:
"Wekk, wekk, a-wekka, sex!
Wekk, wekk, a-wekka, sex!"

Most desired recording on CD:
The '73 revival of Candide.

AMEN, Brudda!

*****WARNING*****

PEDANT ATTACK AHEAD

Those repulsed by the violence in "The Passion" or who would be repulsed watching a 65 year-old Born in the USA grandfather attack a charming not-yet-chronologically-challenged immigrant Hungarian screenwriter should read no further!

[Sets and Costumes from Prisoner of Zenda; staging ala "The Rape" from "The Fantastics"; weapons, brochettes (a "Camelot" reference); music - the Hungarian composer of your choice (Ferencz Liszt , Bela Lagosi Bartok, or, my choice,  Zoltan Kodaly (the Great Hungarian Composers  website says: "He is also the author of books on pedagogic and historical subjects. - My kind of guy!)

Here is the exterior establishing shot for the duel:

Background:

Yesterday Dan of the North made reference to chicken Paprikash. Our soon to be vanquished heroine, Panni, bewailed:

Quote
I can no longer stand by in silence and watch or I shall explode! Explode, I tell you.  -- It's Chicken PAPRIKAS (no H). In Hungarian, "s" is pronounced "sh"...

"S" as in the word "sit" is written "SZ"...

That feels so much better.

Our resident gentleman (TCB) rose to the defense:

Quote
My apologies, DR Panni, but a Google search turned up 279 entries for Chicken Paprikash -- and that doesn't include my friend Lorna's recipe, which is spelled the same way.  They must have all been from the wrong side of Budapest.

The Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth:

In Hungarian the dish is:

paprikás csirke
[PAH-pree-kash CHEER-kah]
Also called chicken paprikash

Noted Hungarian Restaurants, like Pearl of Budapest are a bit schizoid in their verbiage; their menu offers:

CHICKEN PAPRIKAS:
made with sour cream and served over homemade spaetzle $14.00

PÖRKÖLT: DELICIOUS PORK PAPRIKASH
made without sour cream and served over spaetzle $15.00

(I'm sure Panni will view with delight the omission of sour cream!)

The delightful Jo Reggelt Kivanok on her website offers a recipe for:

Chicken Paprikash over Egg Noodles ( Paprikas csirke tesztaval)

And, now, the dénouement:

If you're of the Hungarian persuasion it is:

paprikás csirke! (Please note the use of the diacritical mark! -[My personality makes me inordinately fond of diacritical marks!])

If you are of the English Language persuasion (with allowance made for both Americans and Canadians) it is:

chicken paprikash

But no way, never, no how is it:

Chicken Paprikas!

der "Eternally Vigilant Guardian of Mother Tongue" Brucer

PS Photo is of The Vajdahunyad Castle (taken from Ms Kivanok's site referenced above).

"This is a very unusual building designed by Ignac Alpar. It was originally planned as a temporary structure for the Millenary Exhibition which opened in the City Park in 1896. It was built to present in one building the different architectural styles which could be found in Hungary. Styles represented include Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque. The structure was rebuilt in a permanent form in 1907. "

Another RCA LP release in their Vintage Collection were studio recordings of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy from their films made at the time of their films' releases. (They many years later went into the studio and rerecorded their old hits in stereo, but I'm not interested in that.) I was reminded of it because ROSE MARIE aired on TCM last night, and I recorded it on the DVR to make a DVD-R from it later today.

DR Jenny:  When I read those lyrics from Cops: The Musical last night,  I was about to say, "Please!  Remember, there are young people here!"  Then I looked at the poster's name and realized that you is1 a young people.

Never mind

Donald has another excellent radio show up.  Now how would I have ever discovered "You're Awful" without Donald?  It sounds like a long lost Cole Porter thing, dashed off extempor at a party, natch.

I would add Cry for Us All, and agree with The Mad Show and A Time for Singing (I tried to do both Cry and A Time for Singing, for VS and the other joint, but could never work it out).  And a big yes to the Baroque Beatles Book, a great album.  Thankfully, with the exception of the Bill Evans movie album, almost every commercially released Evans album has found its way to CD.  But not Brubeck - a key want for me is still his ballet Points on Jazz as played by Gold and Fizdale.  The music, at least, is now available on CD in a new recording - it's fine, but Gold and Fizdale were unique and brilliant.  Of course, there are many many Warner Bros. albums we need, especially the soundtracks to Dead Ringer and Inside Daisy Clover, but I'd also like Sex and the Single Girl and Any Wednesday, too.

Good Morning!

I was such the Wussburger last night!  After watching "The Sopranos" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm", I found myself waking up just in time to catch the weather on the news... Then I dragged myself off my couch, plopped into bed... The next thing I knew it was 9:30 this morning!  I guess the weekend had finally caught up with me.  So... Time to catch up, I guess...

-As for a particularly errant and truant and truant and errant Dear Reader who still works at MTI - although not at MIT ;) - and at the Metropolitan Opera, and continues to audition, and is actually assisting with some other projects right now...  In other words, Jason is doing fine.  He's just Busy... With a capital "B" - like I just typed.

-My favorite scene from What's Up Doc?... Ryan O'Neal in white boxers.  :P

-DR WFO - Thank you for sharing.  Again.  And it's soooo nice to know that your Joe will be home soon.  Very soon.

-DR DERBRUCER - Thank you for the pic of the Hungarian dessert repast.  Hmm... I haven't had lunch yet...

Those of you who wish to console Panni could offer some of her favorite:

"BULL’S BLOOD" OF EGER - "EGRI BIKAVÉR"
One of the most famous wines from Hungary. Bull’s blood is a very unique dark red wine. Best served at room temperature with red meats, game, casseroles or cheese.

Or you could send her a gift certificate to Otto's:

Okay, DRs, has any body ever heard of ""Kinder Tojás™"?

Sounds like what Jewish parents spank!

Otto's offers:

KINDER SURPRISE
CHOCOLATE EGGS
"Kinder Tojás™"
A famous milk chocolate for kids and adults.  Kinder Eggs are holo egg shaped chocolates wrapped in foil and have unique center egg pod which contains a very unassembled secret toy.   (Do not give toy to kinds under 4 years old.)

A favorite among kids collectors, and adults, Ferrero Kinder Eggs and mini-toys are collected by thousands of people throughout the world.
