I'm through the first 2-hour round of introductory libretto notes and I need an editor! I feel like I'm arranging TITANIC deck chairs.

I did a diligent search on the Inner-nets, but to no avail.     :(

Also, the documentary about the casting and creation of the recently closed [but touring] revival of A Chorus Line opens in theatres 17-April.

Yes.  ILLYA DARLING is my new favorite KRITZERLAND release of the year!

And as MR BK says, hearing the songs in "show order" makes the album a completely different kind of listen.  My favorite songs are all there....and the addition of PO PO PO and THE BIRTHDAY SONG are great....particularly PO PO PO with it's dialog and exposition.

The music is glorious...remember this is my first time hearing in in S T E R E O!!

Congrats to KRITZERLAND and MR BK on this wonderful release.  Hopefully the score - if not the show - will be rediscovered.  The arrangements are lovely to hear.  And since that cock-eyed Greek prostitute is the whole show - hearing her "vocals" in stereo is also very nice!!

Hurray!

But I still can't make out the lyric in GOLDEN LAND that follows the line:

"....seek the Achilles heel....?????????????????????....far away"

"...and kick that poor schlemiel..."

(I'm guessing here...)

No DR DtM - that can't be correct - MR BK says they didn't use ANY of Sondheim's lyrics. :)

That reminds me of how amused I was while watching the Jerome Robbins DVD: Evil Arthur certainly has lots of good things to say about the man he trashes in his new book on directing.

DR JRand, maybe someday Patti Lupone will record the song--then all will be clear.

ON THIS DAY IN THEATRE HISTORY:

The very first Tony Awards was held in 1947 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.  It reportedly had one of the lowest television audience for an awards show ever.

Thank God Cole Porter's reputation of writing witty lyrics did not depend on Ms. Lupone's recording of "Anything Goes"!!!

Is this something that we need?  A documentary following the creation and casting of the original seems far more interesting.

Apparently the filmmakers do interview and show clips of some of the original participants, including excerpts from the legendary original audiotapes of the "sessions" that led to the creation of the show.

At least in the NYC metro area, PBS is showing an American Masters documentary about composer Philip Glass on Wednesday evening this week.

Of course in 1947 there were only 256 televisions in the U.S.  Three of them tuned in to the Tony Awards....the others were watching the test pattern.

Lo and behold, and also behold and lo, the mailwoman picked up Betty B. for DAW and dropped off Melina for me!
