DR George, I believe the three act musical was a remnant of the 3-Act European operetta, and many of Victor Herbert's shows were in three acts, among them BABES IN TOYLAND and THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER. By the 1920s the 2-act form became supreme: DEAREST ENEMY, by Rodgwrs & Hart, was written in three acts, but performed in two, with the short third act called an Epilogue and attached to Act Two.

Thanks for the info, Larry.  There are so many shows that are sooooooo damned long...and there are some that can be broken up into three acts in appropriately places and audience could have a little more of a break.

Then I watched WRONG TURN on Blu-ray. It's the same stalker/slasher movie that has been made a hundred times. Sure, there were a couple of scares, and the gore level was barely tolerable for me (I have a pretty low threshold for being able to stand gore.) Looks like most of the budget went into designing some really grisly make-up for the three cretins who are the killers.

There was a (dull) commentary and a few puff pieces masquerading as bonus featurettes, none lasting more than 9 1/2 minutes and most about half that time.

But at least it made for an easy afternoon.

Most intrigued by the release tidbits.

Vibes for MR BK and his foot in the door.

Ditto and Ditto!!

And I'm glad it was a pretty easy afternoon work-wise because it's been rough in terms of physical ache and pain. This time PT seems to have aggravated some of the nerve endings which were settling down because I was not feeling well at all around 1:30.

I had time to skim through today's ATWT. Nothing at all of interest though there appears to be some climactic action involving Luke and family next week.

OLTL did have good scenes with Kyle and his new boy friend and Fish coming out to his family after years of dodging the question. Of course, that latter storyline is just starting now and has a long way to go, it appears.

Then I watched an episode of NCIS, a good one with a body found in a marine's storage locker in the states even though the marine has just been killed in Iraq. The investigation is to determine if he killed the girl before shipping out or if he's being framed for the murder.

Well, I guess I'll hop off-line now and get some writing done. Then I have to decide if I feel well enough to venture out tonight. I don't want to end up having to leave due to discomfort after paying for an expensive ticket.

Good Afternoon!

Once again, Greeting from Philadelphia!

*Where, indeed, it is always sunny. Well, now it's sunny, but the overcast this morning helped to keep things cool for the first part of my "express walking tour" of The City of Brotherly Love.

And it so happens that I met up with another DR for lunch in the Reading Terminal Market. -Thankfully(?), I don't think too many ears would have been burning between Noon and 1:00pm. ;)

*Pictures to be posted later. :)

Right now, I'm taking a breather in an Orange Spot, otherwise known as an ING Cafe. $1.50 Peet's Coffee and free Internet.

I walked and walked around Reading Terminal Market. A few tastes, a few samples, a couple of notes for tomorrow, and lots of pictures. Oh, and three scoops of Bassett's ice cream.

And a chocolate-covered Whoopie Pie.

So... Then I walked down to Indepedence Mall, and basically rushed through all the major sites there. I'm back up at Rittenhouse Square right now waiting for my friend, Joe. We'll be heading to dinner, and then, I believe, we'll be going dancing(!!!).

DR Ben - I hope that when that other shoe drops, it drops gently and nowhere near your freshly-carpeted cubicle.

Oh! When I walked by the Walnut Street Theatre, I noticed that I have a few friends in there current production of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. So, I may try to catch the matinee tomorrow before heading back to NYC.

Ooh!  Oooh!  I know!  I know!   Saw it a week ago on USA, I did!  Pretty good episode, too.

What has happened to Fridays on HHW?  We are still on Page Four at almost 4:00 p.m., Left Coast Time?

TOD:
DVD: I think think in this clutter; I know the Netflix items are still here
CD: a lot of John McGlinn, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway
    VCR: this porn is stale

Is that similar to This Porn Is Too Ripe?

PT this morning was the most vigorous workout I've had since I started there. Some very long stretching sections and a final (somewhat painful) one on the floor balanced on a foam pole that was unusual to say the least.

I go again Monday morning.

A friend of mine just sent me an e-mail of what is supposed to the thirty best pictures of the year from National Geographic.  There is no mention of what year these are, so I suppose it could be last year or the year before.  It doesn't really matter, except I thought that I had read that National Geographic was going to include the "Banff Squirrel" in this year's photos.

Anyway, great photos, but I think this may be my favorite.

I notice the good news that WB finally has release Casablanca as a single release without all the things found oin the gift box. I rather just have the movie instead what they have to offer. BUT it took them 9 months to do so.

NOW
If they can do the same thing for The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind. Both of these films should look spectacular in Hi Def.

TWOZ is being release this Tuesday and only in the gift box if one wants it in BR. Gone With the WInd sometime in November I believe and also in a gift box. I hope we won't have to wait 9 months for these to show up as just disc release.

I hope they don't do this to Ben-Hur. What can they offer in a gift box. A replica of tickets to the chariot race? A replica of the chains that Ben-Hur wore in the galley? Don't need it!!

You can get both THE WIZARD OF OZ and GONE WITH THE WIND on Blu-ray from Amazon.uk. without all the doo-dads. Warners BDs play in all BD players, and the price of the two together from the UK plus shipping is cheaper that the Amazon price on one of the special boxes here. Many people are doing this.

Does that mean they are region free??

DR Dan(the Man), I'm glad you found the correct DVD of ELEKTRA. It's the one Strauss opera I don't have on DVD so I just ordered it.

My apartment now looks messy as opposed to its chaotic state of yesterday. I think it's time to begin the cleanup of myself and to contemplate the events of the afternoon. I also have things to bring to people at the memorial: several McGlinn friends who provided me with CDs of live concerts have asked for other concerts they didn't have, and John Vogel, the McGlinn estate executor, William Hicks, the secret behind John's success, and his brother and sister have asked for all of the concerts and BBC broadcasts. I've been burning up my iTunes with discs in the past week.

I'm also taking Evan, John's younger brother, his Gramophone Award for Excellence for the recording of ANYTHING GOES. His sister Lorin got John's similar award for SHOW BOAT. They're quite beautiful framed awards with the CD mounted on it. When John died 9n February, I believe it was DR Michael S who disliked the ANYTHING GOES recording; it still won a Gramophone Award for Excellence in Recording!

On no that wasn't me. I like Mr. McGlinn's work. I was listening to Show Boat this afternoon.

I have many of his recordings: Anything Goes, Thomas Hampson's Cole Porter album, Sitting Pretty, Broadway Showstoppers, Brigadoon, Kern, Gershwin, Porter Overtures, Annie Get Your Gun (Original Broadway Version), Kurt Weill on Broadway, Kiss Me Kate and Lambert Wilson  (I believe people here stated they didn't like it.) There maybe a few others.

I think I said I wasn't crazy over Kiri Sings Gershwin. I just thought her vocal stylings were wrong for the material
