The director called and filming is indeed on, so I am heading downtown in a few minutes.

I wonder what will happen when they find out I can't act.

They will give you your own series.

My day was very quiet. and I watched the first season of THE NANNY Around the last episode, I had two big phone calls, one from Crista Moore, and it was fun to catch up on things, and one from a very unhappy Joshie, who's working his ass ogg gratis for this Equity Fights AIDS benefit on Monday. We discussed the situation and I'll check on him tomorrow to see how the latest turn of events settled.

Now i'm going to watch the complete new BBC version of EMMA.

Actually, I saw Danny La Rue play Dolly Levi in a West End production of HELLO, DOLLY! back in 1984.

And I just double-checked with the Internet, and my memory was correct that Lionel Jeffries, who passed away yesterday, played Horace.

Love hearing all the book talk.

Well, since you do, muse Margaret just called.  She finished going through the book for flow - and she had no notes at all - until the bloody last chapter, which has been very difficult to get right.  Part of the problem this time is she was reading the old version, before I'd taken out eleven pages.  But even so, she still felt it was too dry and needed more me and that it somehow was losing the theme of the book.  We talked at length about it and I finally figured out exactly what she was missing.  I then read through it again and she was right - it was fine, it got the job done, but it just didn't feel as personable as the rest of the book - so I added about six sentences and two paragraphs, addressing that.  I also cut two long paragraphs, which I could see were dragging it down.  It was very tricky, this chapter, mostly because of what it has to accomplish.  Because the book is not a laundry list but is actually telling a story, the last chapter had to complete that story, but I had, as Margaret said, done it too dryly and that it was missing the spark of energy and joy.  And that's what I just added.  I then called her and read her the chapter from start to finish.  She loved all the new additions, which are very up and a couple of them are really funny - and that's what she'd missed and now she's really happy with it.  I'm so glad she's who she is - it would have been easy to just not say anything, but she was right about it and hopefully now it's closer to what it needs to be - it sure reads that way.  I'll probably go back later and make sure it's all smooth and see if there's anything else I want to add or fool around with, but it feels much better now.  It's amazing what a few sentences and paragraphs can do to inform that which came before and which comes after.  It made all the difference in the world.

Excellent news. I know that rewriting can be as important as writing. Looking forward to the book.

Now that I have watched the men's free skate I went back & read all the skating posts from last night.  I basically agree with everything said about the skaters.

It is a rare treat to watch a skater fall & then give a wonderful performance.  Instead of looking sad he had a big smile...what a guy.  If he hadn't fallen I wonder if he would have gotten the Gold.  Fall or no fall, he still skated rings around Plushenko, IMHO.

I assume you're talking about Takahashi. He had a sensational skate apart from the one big spill on the quad (shouldn't have done it; should have done a triple-triple like Evan did: almost the same value as a quad) and a little slip late in the program landing one of his combinations. And SO much personality! I just loved his routine ("La Strada") and his personality just burst forth at every second - very magnetic personality on ice.

Yes, I think he is an amazing skater, such style.  I was hoping he wouldn't go for it, still I didn't really expect him to go down. :(

I personally prefer the new scoring & the return to overall skating skills, for me it isn't all about jumps.

I can't remember the Swiss guy name, WOW ON HIS SPINS!

No offense to Elvis Stojko who was, in his day, a phenomenal jumper but he had no finesse and was all about the jumps and brute force on the ice. It doesn't surprise me that he'd prize jumps over any other component.

Stephane Lambiel was the Swiss champion with the terrific spins. I was SHOCKED to see that he was judged THIRD best in the free skate for almost every jump having shaky landings. Of course, he landed two quads (very off balance and ugly style, but he did land them), but he was the one who couldn't do a triple axle.

Well, when I went downstairs, I was thrilled to find all of the skating on Sports on Demand for Free! NBC had taken all of the short programs they broadcast and eliminated the commercials and breakaways for other news and they ran 69 minutes of programming.

The long programs they showed Thursday night were edited together into 99 minutes. Of course, I had those except for Plushenko, so I fast forwarded ahead to the end and there it was, the entire free skate, his scores, and Evan's backstage reaction. Also interviews with him, Plushenko, and Johnny Weir.

Now, as for Plushenko's skate, anyone who has any knowledge of skating and watched that skate and thought he deserved the gold medal is simply being blinded by the quad. ONLY. Both triple axles were tilted in the air, sloppily landed and completely lacking in any interesting entries or exits out of the jumps. Look at Evan's jumps, or Takahashi's and you'll see they do a spiral, or a camel, a spread eagle, or a semi-ina bauer and after the jumps a flourish, a turn, or some kind of movement that Plushenko NEVER did, not once in his entire series of jumps. He rattled off the jumps - just jump-jump-jump but nothing interesting to connect or introduce them.

As for the rest of the skating: footwork sequences which didn't involve intricate steps but rather posing, blowing kisses to the crowd, or Nijinsky prancing but nothing of real difficulty - all showy and grand for show skating but not for a competition where difficulty of execution is prized. He was counting on charisma and flair to make up for a lack of real choreographic zest and intricate step sequences and interpretation of the music. I am SO glad that flash didn't dazzle the judges as to their real mission: to reward the skater who best presented his arsensal of jumps, spins, and choreographed footwork with the cleanest presentation and fewest mistakes.

As for that comment about Evan slowing down, that doesn't make sense to me at all. He skated to his music which actually sped up at the end, and he didn't miss a beat of the music in that step sequence.

Anyway, with Plushenko's skate available, I was able to transfer the long program skaters I wanted to keep onto the DVD-R with the short programs I prized, and now the men's short and long programs have been deleted from the DVR.

On to the ladies on Tuesday night!

Then I watched FROST/NIXON. It was an enjoyable film with superb performances, but, once again, had I been choosing last year's nominees, DOUBT would have made the list over FROST/NIXON.

Tomorrow I'll get to see THE READER. Looking forward to that one since it has the performance that beat Meryl Streep's remarkable work in DOUBT. I'm eager to see it. THE READER was also a Best Picture nominee, so I'll see if I liked it better than DOUBT as well.

DS Betsy spotted Sarah Silverman at a Portland performance space today.  Sarah was evidently there with her new boyfriend.  (Jimmy) Kimmel must be history.
