Since Randy is one of my favorite songwriters, singers, film composers and all around nice guys, it's hard to chose. But "When She Loved Me" is, I think, one of the all-time greatest songs ever written for a film.
I love bk's verson of "Marie", and the new Randy album has turned out to be one of my favorites; Randy at his sarcastic best. I have been a fan of his for over 40 years, since I was in Jr. high school.
Favorite album: RANDY NEWMAN (produced by Van Dyke Parks) FAUST, LAND OF DREAMS
Favorite film scores: AVALON, AWAKENINGS, PARENTHOOD, PLEASANTVILLE...so many great ones. I use them as temp tracks all the time. I became friends with his music supervisor, Michael Roth, and he has done a wonderful job of scoring our baseball film. If anyone knows how to knock off Randy's style, it's Michael! We even got to use "Short People" in the baseball film.
When I was working in LA with him last month, he played me a demo that Alicia Keyes did when she auditioned for the role of the princess. She wasn't chosen because her speaking voice was too deep and didn't sound young enough, and the song was cut from the film, so it only exists in the demo Michael did with her, but it's wonderful. I hope it ends up being recorded for an album some day. (bk---hint...hint....)
