If you think your boyfriend has been killed in the war, and you are a pianist, then you need to get hooked up with a famous composer and have him buy you clothes and a huge New York apartment.

Then when it turns out that your boyfriend was only slightly killed and he comes back, marry him, and then shoot the composer.

At least that's what Bette Davis did today in Deception.

Works for me!

elmoore my Scarlet Street arrived today...so if you haven't mailed the other copy, you don't have to.

If you did, I owe you something!

WEL - there is a package on its way to you....mailed it this morning.  Get your turntable warmed up!

DR JRand, I have to find it in this dump I inhabit!  I'll offer it to another.  If anyone would like a copy of the new SCARLET STREET, I've got a copy to give away.  My subscription copy arrived after (1) I bought a newsstand copy and (2) I buigged their office so much they sent me one, which I did try to stop after the subscription copy came in, I swear I did!

But even Merman, Martin, Julie Andrews, and Barbara Cook (to name a few) made regular visits to TV on variety shows, specials, and spectaculars.

Quote

Live television drama from New York helped, too.  I remember seeing Barbara Cook in a tv drama in the early 1960s.  My first memory of the Lunts is Lynn Fontanne's narrating Mary Martin's PETER PAN broadcast in 1954 or so.  I still remember how much I loved them in THE MAGNIFICENT YANKEE broadcast, and my first memory of seeing Gretchen Wyler, whom I met when I moved to New York, was the Gary Moore show.

Dear Friend BK, if she'd said half a cast, no orchestrations, records Friday, she'd be describing some of the sessions we've been through!

Rosie didn't give Broadway in general a boost.  She gave shows she liked a boost.  I remember the day that she had a number on from PARADE.  She was not a fan of this show, so merely presented the number with no comment and no interviews.  She merely introduced it and mispronounced Carolee Carmello's name.  On the other hand she plugged TITANIC alomos daily, and  presented numbrs from the show on a regular basis.  The FORBIDDEN BROADWAY spoof of TITANIC featured Rosie as saving the show.

WEL - SO glad you said this.  Saved me the trouble!

We're moving through page three faster.

I used to love when Rosie featured Broadway shows.

I think that she did help all of Broadway.  And no she didn't promote every show equally.  But she did invite most shows to appear.

Yes there were a few shows that she loved (Titanic, Lion King ...) that she promoted more.  But wouldn't anyone talk about something they love more than something they didn't care for?

It happens on every talk show.

I first saw numbers from AIDA on Rosie....and numbers from TITANIC.  She pushed certain shows - but I couldn't have seen numbers from a LOT of shows if she hadn't had them on.  And of course, after seeing some of them, I was certain I didn't want to see the shows!

Have just come back from coffee with a dear friend who's visiting LA and happens to be staying 5 minutes from my place. We went to Aroma, a fave coffe shop/book store on Tujunga. He's left me the galleys of his huge new book. I'm looking forward to reading it - and have to carve out time - in the middle fo the night probably - to read.

I finished watching ALIAS this afternoon, and there were certainly some nice surprises. Can't say I was all that surprised about the identity of "The Passenger" since the wonderful national media had been blasting for a couple of weeks about this person. (To say more would give away certain crucial information. Those who watch the show know what I'm talking about.) But I love the set-ups with Sydney, Vaughn, Lauren, Sark, and Sloane to play out over the next three episodes.

COLD CASE also had a wonderfully affecting hour of drama last night. Though my family's never been involved in a murder, there were certain elements of last night's show with a mother and son that hit very close to home.

Hello!

Well, "Where's Charley?" is done, over, fini.  It was a good run, and the second weekend went remarkably well.  The cast party was fun too!

After this post we need 16 posts to get to page 3.

I'm listening to Donald's show right now and hearing John Cullum in On the 20th Century just makes me realize how much better that musical was than this current revival of the play 20th Century on Broadway now w/Baldwin & Heche. Cullum is magnificent

"On the Twentieth Century" really should have been revived.  I've been listening to it a great deal lately, and the score is phenomenal.

There are a lot of Broadway stars who I love and think SHOULD be huge stars.

Women--

Bernadette Peters
Patti LuPone
Donna Murphy
Carolee Carmello
Kristin Chenoweth
Audra McDonald
Marin Mazzie
Rachel York (who I think is extremely underrated, and I hope Sly Fox helps to change that)
Emily Skinner
Julia Murney
Sutton Foster (amazing voice, but needs to work a little harder at being natural, as oxymoronic as that sounds).

Men--
Brian Stokes Mitchell
Brent Barrett
Brian D'Arcy James
Patrick Wilson (who seems to be heading for stardom very rapidly)
Norbert Leo Butz
Marc Kudisch

I think of the current crop of Broadway stars, Melissa Errico has the best chance of mainstream success.  Not only does she have the looks, but she seems to have a very good idea of how to market herself, and she's already made forays into other media.

Good vibes to Jennygarde!

Interesting that in the UK there are still "stars". Michael Ball, Michael Crawford, Elaine Page, Ruthie Henshall and probably now, Maria Freidman would be known nationally. (Crawford was known to older generations for his TV series "Some Mothers Do Have Them"). Maybe it's just the size of the country.

After you have listened to our own Donald Feltham's sparkling new radio show (he has a new photo up, at least go and look at that if you can't listen to the show), hie yourselves over to BBC Radio 3 and listen to Stage and Screen. They are doing a two week retrospective of Lerner and Loewe. There are some nice sequences with the Sexiest Man Alive (or the Sexiest Man in the World, I forget) Brent Barrett. The presenter plays a sequence between Barrett and Rebecca Luker with There But for You Go I. It's wonderful.

His official HHW title is "WSMA," which is "World's Sexiest Man Alive."

THE TOPIC OF THE DAY:

Who are my favorite Broadway performers of the day?  I think that just about everybody who as already been mentioned is pretty darned fabulous.  I'd add Betty Buckley and Alice Ripley to the collective list.

As for who I feel is "poised for real stardom," probably Kristin Chenoweth has the best shot.  Even though her TV show tanked (I liked it) the show was built around her and she played a character named Kristin.  Also, since she’s so small and has that incredible voice, I think that people will want to know more about her.

Several actresses once poised for real stardom have shown up as  Martin (Frasier) Crane's girlfriends:

Alice Playten (small and incredible voice)
Anita (Mr. President and All American; and cut from The Gay Life) Gillette
Emily (lovely in Hello Dolly) Yancy (playing Brian Stokes Mitchell's mother).

DR MattH: I had not heard any buzz about the identity of the "passenger".  So I was totally surprised.

It just doesn't make complete sense to me, given what Sloane told the shrink.  Very confusing show!
