The first time I stood in line to get a book signed, it was at a science fiction convention, and there were two (count 'em, two!) authors signing: Robert Bloch and Samuel R. Delany, both of whom I hold in awe, and their signed books (Bloch's was a limited-edition hardcover of Psycho II, and Delany's was a first edition of Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand) are books I'll keep with me 'til the day I...well, you know.

As to on-line dating....

Michael and I are living proof that it can work.  I met Michael after he answered an ad that I placed on-line.  My ad went something like this.

I am a big geek.  I'm into old horror and science fiction movies, musical theater, pre-1970 science fiction novels, comic books, film music, and "Star Trek"...in short, if geeks have a reputation for liking something...I probably like it too.  I look like a geek, talk like a geek, and dress like a geek.  If this doesn't put you off, and you actually know who Bernard Herrmann was, or if you wouldn't feel out-of-place at a "Star Trek" convention...well, answer this ad!

Actually, I got quite a few answers, and after some perfectly hideous dating experiences, I unexpectedly met Michael, who turned out to be The One.  Who'd'a thunk it????

WEL...I think Greg Louganis made an appearance at the Gay Games a few weeks/months before his book came out, but I could be wrong....I have been before.

I would just put my picture at the online dating service and an email address....  And then just wait.  In fact, I am still waiting.

Yes, but if you used that current photo, the only person who replied would be Frankie Avalon.

Greg Louganis actually sat two rows in front of me when I went to see LES MIZ years ago. It was while LES MIZ was still at the Broadway Theater, and Greg had three other people with him. I noticed that he was sitting and talking with a man before the curtain went up. At intermission, I did walk up to him (I'm not sure most of the people there knew who he was) and tell him how impressed I had been to see him in three different Olympics. I think he was stunned that anyone remembered he had been in three different games.

I remember going to a few book signings in the early 1990s. The signer looked very much like me a decade ago. I don't think the line was that long - well not on my side of the table.

You'll just have to do a search at HHW! I think "readers digest" might be the key words.

Since the name Greg Louganis has been mentioned a couple of times, I thought I would put my 2¢ in.

I totally supported Mr. Louganis coming out (not that everyone didn't know anyway), but I deplored the timing.  He did so the same week his book went on sale and it seemed to me like he was coming out to sell books, turning a brave statement into a cheap stunt to sell books.  Had he announced he was gay even a month or so before the book was published it would have been so much better timing.  Instead it was like "well, I want to sell books so I'll wait to come out until people can buy them".  This cheapened the whole thing for me and I didn't buy the book, which I probably would have otherwise.

Greg Louganis was already "quietly out" before his book came out.  And there had been so much speculation about what his upcoming biography would be about, that his homosexuality was pretty much an open secret at the time.  -At least in my little corner of the world.

As for the money angle...  Well... I'm sure the publishers had something to do with that too.  And aren't most "major announcements" tied together with some sort of major media blitz?

As for Mr. Louganis, if I remember correctly, the timing of his public coming out and the book were on purpose mainly so that people would be able to get all the details and "dirt" directly from him via his book rather than further speculation from so-called "reliable sources".  Yes, he did a ton of interviews around that time, but there's no way all those sound bites could have covered all the information that people wanted to know, to find out.  And didn't Richard Chamberlain just go through a similar situation?

In any case, just be glad that such a public figure did have the courage to come out, to set the record straight (sorry, I just couldn't avoid the pun).  I'm just hoping that now more public figures will come out while their careers are at their height, while they are still active in their careers, rather than after the eyes of public have started to drift away from them.

As for my 2-cents:  I lost some admiration for Greg Louganis when I learned that he smoked cigarettes.  -He would take cigarette breaks at some of the signings - not the best example for young athletes.

And on a related note... Did anyone else watch the Men's Olympic Diving Trials this past weekend?  When did they start Synchronized Diving?  Very cool... And, actually, very sexy. ;)

A QUESTION FOR ASK BK DAY:

If you were to join an on-line dating service (not that anyone here would ever need to) and write a discription of yourself to attract that special someone (as if those attributes aren't self-evident, which they are), what would you include in your discription?

No "Well, I would never do such a thing" replies, please!  We already know that none of us would ever need to!  But, for the sake of being silly, just pretend, and give us your best on-line come-on.

 :D

Actually, I also placed an ad.  I went to love.com (I think that now you have to be an AOL subscriber, which I wasn't at the time) and my tag line was "Chubby Seeks Chubby Chaser."  I got a few responses, e-mailed a couple and spoke with and met only one.  It panned out!  He lived (and still lives) in Seattle (I live in Olympia) and we sent e-mails back and forth, chatted on the phone and eventually met.  We pretty much dated for three and a half years (until last year) when the long-distance got to be too much for me.  He has a job that takes him out of town for a week, every other week and he doesn't have a car.  I had to drive up to Seattle any time that we wanted to see each other and try to find parking.  About half the time, I had to pay for parking.  So all of that hassle, plus the time away from each other, didn't add up to a situation conducive to a developing relationship.  We've stayed friends (which is a good thing) and we still call each other and visit, just not as often as when we were "seeing" each other.  That's my story. ;D

What is halvah?

Here's a short answer:  It's basically a "sweet" made from sesame seeds and sugar.  It has a texture similar to the filling you find in a Butterfinger candy bar or a Zagnut, Clark, etc., only finer.

I first came across at it a small breakfast gathering that some theatre friends had hosted.  Once I tried it, I knew I liked it, and I've liked it ever since.  You can usually find it among the Jewish and Kosher foods in your supermarkets.  It's sold in small bricks - almost like cheese is sold.  Some stores and delis also sell it "fresh" where you order big slices off a big brick of it.  It's not strictly a Jewish food, more middle-Eastern I believe.

Joyva is the most common brand you can find.  And if you go to their vendor website, you can get a more accurate description of exactly what halvah is - as well as order some if you'd like.

www.halvah.biz

AH!  According to the site, halvah is of Turkish origin.

-I'll stop now before I share any more possible mis-information...  However, there is also Indian halwah which is a concoction of grated carrots, almonds and honey - usually served warm.  And it's very tasty too!

Jose, Thanks for posting the halvah site.

They also offer tahini (sesame paste), which is the key ingredient of halvah. You can buy a drum of tahini - 460 pounds. Now, considering that 4 oz. of tahini is 600 calories ....

However, it's cholesterol free.

Good Afternoon/Early Evening/Dusk!

Whew!

Well, after three hours of some major cleaning and organizing, all I can say right now is...

"Wow!  I have a LOT of sh*t, crap, junk, memorabilia, souvenirs, books, CDs, etc..."

There were more than a few moments in the past three hours where I would just stand in the middle of room in awe of just how much stuff I have accumulated over the past couple of years - even over the past year alone!  I started feeling a little like Charlie Brown: "This has been a most discouraging day."

So, for now, I'm mainly organizing the mess, and after today I really do have to just take it one box at a time.  Sort, purge, sell, give away, E-bay, etc.  And if I do one box a day, I should be done by the end of July.  (Ugh!) Thankfully, some of the boxes are small, so I can take care of two in a day, but I also have three big boxes, so... Ah, well...

"So, Jose, what did you this summer?"  "Well, let me tell you..."

Even while shuffling the stuff I did today, I came across a few items I thought I had lost, items I didn't even know I had, and, of course, those dreaded duplicate items.  Oh, and a lot of plain old junk.

"I'm not a collector, I just don't throw anything away."

Oh, and the dust bunnies!  The Dust Bunnies!!

So, I'm taking a little break now just to clear my head - and to take a break from breathing in all the dust I've been stirring up.  Watching the news, and I'm gonna head out for a little walk in a bit too and get some dinner.

BUT I did empty a few bags, and even a box or two.  And I even consolidated some crates.

OK - I can feel my blood sugar starting to get low...  Suppertime!

Laters...

Bruce I’m leaving Friday morning.

Today was not a good day.  This morning I had an early dentist appointment, so instead of taking Echo hiking with her friends in the mountains Keith walked her here.  He went extra early before it got to hot to go and unfortunately went at the same time as a neighbor.  Their dog attacked Echo.  We treated her wounds on her ear and thought she was okay.  This afternoon we found what looked like a puncture wound on her side.  I just returned from the vet.  It turned out to be a cyst that somehow, with or without help, burst during the commotion.  It was flushed out and our pet sitter will watch her closely for any infections.  We have an antibiotic on standby and Neosporin for the wounds.

Keith and Echo were rather shaken up from this, and worse any stress speeds up the progress on Echo’s condition.  (If you don’t know what I’m referring to, please read my June 12, 7:02PM post).

My question is this:

When you record an instrumental album like the Ennio Morriconne album do you mike each instrument separatly in case a musician (god forbid) hits a bad note and therefore can just go back and do an insert with that musician instead of recording the whole orchestra again?

Aside: On the Fistful of Leone track on th same album. What makes or who makes the "wow wow" sounds when it comes to the Good, The Bad and the Ugly theme?
