I just spent a satisfying hour and a half watching WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, which has to be one of the more unnerving movies ever made. My nerves were thoroughly unned.
What a great rediscovery. For me it's a companion rediscovery to Walter Hill's THE DRIVER, with which I recently reacquainted myself, as they connect in certain great, and gritty, downtown L.A. locations. Did I say gritty? The whole film is gritty. The first 20 minutes, and the end, are classic. But I was happily along for the ride throughout. Even got a couple of surprises, because (cue the cliche department): they don't make 'em like this anymore! The modern day ripoffs are predictable in ways that sometimes the originals aren't. I love 1970s thrillers, and what an incredible example to bring a decade of them to an end.
