By the way, I very highly recommend FRESHWATER ROAD! It is about a sheltered black girl from Detroit in the 1960s who decides to travel to Mississippi to help with registering black voters. Unfortunately, she finds out this is fraught with danger.
The author is Denise Nicholas, who many of you will remember from starring in the 1970s tv series ROOM 222. I suspect some of this book is based on her work with the civil rights movement. There is a lot in this book that is reminding me of the voter suppression that has been going on lately.
Here is Denise with her handsome co-star, and one of my favorite actors, Lloyd Haynes.
