TOD

Bands:
Artie Shaw
Benny Goodman
Duke Ellington
Count Basie
Glenn Miller

Singers:
The Andrews Sisters
Tex
Ella with Chick Webb
Peggy Lee

Special shoutout to one of my all-time favorite songs: Cole Porter's Leader of a Big-time Band

And say what you will of the movie, but the soundtrack to New York, New York with Georgie Auld on sax is killer.

Lovely notes.  I feel for Mr DOUG.  I go through the same thing every year with the group I have been with since 1979.....

There are so many IDIOTS.....and when I suggest a couple of shows like BUS STOP and SEND ME NO FLOWERS.....they argue and complain and gripe and we end up with THE MOUSETRAP and BAREFOOT IN THE PARK....and of course ANNIE.....not to mention BEAUTY & THE BEAST....

Oh well....maybe I will still be sick....HA.

Shameless self-promo plug - Maybe they should do THE LAST STARFIGHTER musical, now that the "suitable for all ages" Family version is available

https://youthplays.com/musical/the-last-starfighter-family-version-by-skip-kennon-fred-landau-472

So there is also an "adult" version as well?

Shameless plug part 2 - The regular version, which is the one preserved on the Kritzerland cast album, is labeled "Suitable for middle school audiences and older"

Psst, it's on the HHW calendar.  I had to look, because I thought it was a much younger milestone.

Thursday morning greetings!  I slept better last night than I have in a week, but still not ready to set the world on fire.  Maybe I'll do a little grocery shopping today and this evening go to the August meeting of my book group.

or maybe discuss doing LAST STARFIGHTER, and wind up doing ANNIE!

This would be the result, I have no doubt DR FJL.

I saw the National tour of Something Rotten last night.  Very clever and fun.  Act one seemed tedious, but the rest was great.  Nice to see an "original" show for once.

I'm up, I'm up - six-and-a-half hours of sleep and have already picked up the Freshly package.  The cold packs were fine and working so I suppose it's all fine.

I remember offering to do The Last Starfighter at LACC a decade ago.  There was no interest from the authors whatsoever.  :)

That was then, this is now.  :)

IIRC, we were even trying to get it done through the L.A. New Musicals Festivals back then.

Maybe it was a matter of not having the materials ready (???), because this was quite a major undertaking by the YouthPlays staff to get the materials ready for licensing once they'd accepted the show.

Could have been done easily, my friend.  But, that was then and now is now :)  This was after the Festival, which BTW, was never a Festival like NYMF - they're still around doing the nothing they've been doing for a decade now.

I looked back at old emails.  When the Village Theatre in Washington State did their workshop in 2008, and had an option on a production, they had originally wanted that production (if they'd done one) to be a West Coast premiere.  But they never went on to do that production.  Maybe that was part of the decision?

The talks with the L.A. festival were in 2009, which I remember only because the talks were at exactly the same time as B.D. had done Skip's show HERRINGBONE in La Jolla, and the Festival had tried to make some arrangement to associate HERRINGBONE and STARFIGHTER with the Festival.

But even in talking with the festival, that L.A. festival was just talking about doing STARFIGHTER at a high school, and we were interested in that as a step towards seeing how the show could work from a licensing point of view.

L.A.C.C. would have been much more prestigious than a high school, I would think.  Or was it that we would have had to raise the $$$ for LACC?
