I ended up liking but not loving Two Gentlemen of Verona. The tone shifted a little too often for my tastes from comedy to drama to romance to whatever. He did better with the love story in Midsummer, the woman dressed as a man in As You Like It, the man with a dog in Much Ado, the foolishly strange lover in Twelfth Night, etc., but it's nice to see where so much of those stories or touches came from.

I've been reading a Harlem Renaissance novel called Romance in Marseille, by Claude MacKay. It's a shocker. Written in the late 1920s, the language is unapologetic about everything. His lesbian characters aren't suffering. His whores don't apologize for the life they lead. The pimps are low lifes, but not in need of psychological study. They're all there in service of the story. About the only thing the novel doesn't have is a genuine romance. And you don't really expect it.
