When I was at Western Washington University and was studying to become a high school choir teacher (before reality set it), I took a class on how to pronounce foreign language, so that we could at least sound like we understood what we were singing when, in fact, we had no clew. Anyway, pronouncing Latin, Italian and German was very easy, but French was the hardest for everyone in the class.

Edward R. Murrow was CBS for me for many years. His See It Now and Person to Person were great pleasures. And he used to host a Friday evening program that followed The Twilight Zone....that may have been See It Now...that was taken over by Walter Cronkite.

I have read one good Murrow bio....but forget the title....

Almost ALL bios of Murrow deal with his professional life and not much with his personal life. And like many pioneers in communication, CBS eventually treated him as some type of dinosaur whose time had passed...shuffling him all around the schedule and reducing his budgets until he finally became a victim of his own success and ego.

Good Afternoon all!

I hope no one has their bathrobes in a twist!

It is cold. Not cool as the newscasters would have you believe. IT IS COLD!

When I was a little girl, my grandmother on my fathers side, spoke German to me. There is a tape somewhere of her and I playing Old Maid and talking in German. Now, I barely remember two words of it.

I took Spanish in Jr. High and passed on the condition that I would never take another foreign language as long as I live.

I can sign a little--I think I can "sing" Happy Birthday in sign and I can speak a little bit of Klingon. Got myself in a LOT of trouble at a con once doing that.

There was a guy dressed up as a full Klingon. To be cute, I used a Klingon phrase on him and he (thinking I spoke full Klingon) behaved like a Klingon male and threw me over his shoulder! He thought I was trying to start a Klingon mating ritual!

Luckily, I remembered one other Klingon phrase which translated to something like, "I would rather go wash my hair"--a BIG insult to a Klingon male and he sat me back down.

Some of the other "Klingons" started to laugh at him because I insulted his “manhood”. Those guys take their personas VERY seriously.

It was both scary and funny at the same time. All I know is that I will NEVER do that again. In fact, I don't even remember how to say what I said.

Eric Paddon is an insult to the human race. I've had many run-ins with him (he's also a staunch defender of joecaps) - I don't see him posting much anymore. Knowing he is McCarthy's lover is not a surprise, since that's how he tends to take people on that he doesn't care for - he casts scurrilous brickbats gleaned from things he can find on the web - taking them completely out of context like, well, just like Mr. McCarthy used to do fifty years ago.

Well, your take is identical to my own. Although, I'd throw in a few cherce descriptive vulgarities in my references to him.

I once asked him if he was the real Eric Paddon or whether he was using his father's e-mail address because I found him very juvenile.

Supposedly, he teaches at Wheaton University. There are various treatises by an Eric Paddon findable via Google in which he "alters history" with his own unique perspectives.

I've likened him to an anti-christ, which threw him into a rage, of course.

DR Ron.... sometime these people just don't really believe it could be them causing your condition.

When I first met my then to be FIL I discovered that in honor of our engagement (vixdad & I were already engaged before I met them as they were still living in Coventry England ) for which his parents threw us the equivalent of a wedding reception in his mum's restaurant (she owned a restaraunt on the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in Stoneleigh, near Stratford Upon Avon)

Anyway, In honor of our engagment Dad had invested heavily in cigars for the men to enjoy after the meal. Unfortunately after checking I discovered that there was no "other room" to which the smokers would retire to indulge, and I am desperately allergic to cigar smoke. I asked vixdad to convey this information , which he did, and it was received as meaning that I "didn't care for cigar smoke"... a few days before the party Dad lit up a precelebration cigar along with an Uncle who was visiting and I had to leave the room, my eyes streaming with tears, my nose pouring..., I retired to the bathroom with the window open and mopping my eyes with a damp washrag until Mum came to find me.

She wanted to know whatever I was crying about. I explained that I was desperately allergic to cigar smoke, that I was not "crying" and I had no control over the condition. Needless to say the cigar smoking at the enagement party was cancelled, but I suspect that Dad really believed that had I "chosen to" I could have overcome my problem.

My favorites are still the Linz family--I like their energy and I think they're a fun group. My least favorite is the Weavers--they've revealing themselves as the truly dysfunctional group in this race. The father and three daughters are okay but not very involving. The four sisters are also okay, but I was a little turned off by the self-produced drama during last week's show. The Loud Italians are just annoying.

DR Vixmom, I think you are right. Most people tend to think that people who cannot stand smoke or perfume simply do not like it. They don't really get the symptoms that go with it! I am a little bit better now. But for a while i could barely go through the front of most department stores (perfume department).

I would have to hold my breath and run through the store. I'm not sure if they are spraying less perfume in the air. Or if my allergies are a bit better. But I really try to stay completely away from perfume. Although some cologne and shampoos also bother me. That is one reason i was so thrilled to find the Secret Vanilla body spray. I can use that and feel like a grown-up!

Tuesday greetings! It is a blustery fall day here in SW Ohio.

TOD - I took 4 years of high school Spanish and what I remember best is that one of my textbooks had a house plan in it that I liked a lot. Something must have sunk in, though, because I placed into second year, second semester Spanish in college, thus completing my 2-year language requirement midway through my freshman year. In my senior year, I decided to learn a little French, so took first-year, which helped the old GPA immensely!

Can't speak either, but what little reading knowledge I have comes in handy in my reference work.

I may have to learn some German soon, because DS Rob plans to co-op in Germany in 2008.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

Sorry to have been errant and truant so far today, but...

7:00 - Woke up. Watched a bit of "The Today Show".
7:35 - Headed back to the mechanic.
8:00 - Arrived at my mechanic's shop. Waited in the car for a while while they got all the lights turned on. -I told them I would be there when they opened! That also gave me a chance to listen to the news on NPR.
8:05 - Went in and dropped off my key.
8:06 - Started watching the last half of "Win A Date With Tad Hamilton" on HBO. -The TV in their waiting area has cable. Also started reading some of "Interview with the Vampire".
9:00-ish - Started watching that "Pancho Villa" movie on HBO. Also continued multi-tasking by reading bits and pieces of "Interview".
10:20 - I noticed that one of the supply drivers came by with the part for my car - a tire rod end, I believe.
10:50 - I saw my car being wheeled out of the service bay.

*Of course, I was still charged for 90 minutes of shop time - even though a good chunk of that time was spent waiting for the part. However, I managed to get out of there for about $130 - which was actually lower than the estimate I was given yesterday. So, no real complaints.

Then it was over to Ukrop's for some lunch - Tomato Basil soup, and a Tuna Melt. Then over to my storage place to dig out my winter coat. Then back here to get cleaned up, and catch up on some e-mails...

I'm gonna go ahead and stay here tonight too. Steve had Men's Chorus rehearsal last night, so we'll head out for dinner tonight. And then I'll head back up to Fairfax in the morning. *There's also some construction planned for 95 tonight, and I don't feel like sitting in traffic right now.

All in all, a good day so far. Not great, but good. -And I've said it before, but... It's just amazing how much day there is when you get up before 10:00AM!

Topic of the Day:

I took two years of French in high school. When I got to college, I tested into French II. Well, after the first few weeks of that class, I realized that I should have started back at French I (well, college-level French I

). I ended up taking five semesters of French in college.

I also took one semester of German. Unfortunately, I happened to take German 101 at the same time I was taking French 301. Not a good idea. I finally realized what they meant by "Romance languages". -"Dative case", c'mon?!?!? I squeaked out of that class with a passing grade.

I decided to take German as part of my musical education. -Most Music History majors were required to take German. I was big into my "vocal coaching" mode, and just figured have the extra language facility could only help. I had even planned to take a semester of Italian just to get a basic understanding of the language. Well... I decided my two semesters of Lyric Diction were all I needed at that time after my French/German debacle.

I can still read in French - I do have to look up words, but I can understand most basic texts. And if I happen to be around "it" for a couple of days, I can carry on basic conversations in French. I can pronounce German. I can pronounce Italian. There was even a time when I could pronounce Russian - there's a great Russian diction book put out by Di Capo, breaks down the Cyrillic alphabet in plain English, so to speak. -Thank you IPA!

I've said it before... My Ford Escort Wagon is a 1993 model. It still runs very well, and the gas mileage is still "silly good" (averages about 40mpg on the highway). I'd have to say that over the 13 years I've owned the car, I've put just about $3000 in major repairs into it besides the usual maintenance stuff (oil, filers, etc.). Not bad at all.

And now that the car is "good" until next October, this morning's visit to the garage will most likely be my last one since I'll be selling the car once I make the "final" move to NYC in February.

OH! And the gasoline prices... WOW!

When I filled up in Fairfax Sunday afternoon, regular was at $2.79/gallon. When I arrived in Richmond Sunday night, most places had regular at $2.69/gallon. -Gas is usually ten cents cheaper down here in Richmond (compared to DC). Well...

Yesterday, when I went to get my car inspected, I noticed that some stations had dropped to $2.49/gallon.

And when I was leaving the garage this morning, I saw places as low at $2.39/gallon!

I had heard the news reports that gas prices had dropped a quarter over the last two weeks, but 20 cents in two days?!?!? WOW!
