DR MATTH - I read on the INTER-NET something I hadn't realized, perhaps you can confirm.  The new and "improved" TV GUIDE does not have regional editions.  It is a completely national magazine with only cable and satellite listings.

Can this be true??

I haven't read a single decent review of the new OKLAHOMA! set. Mine should be here in a day or two. How very, very disappointing. Thankfully, my laserdisc still plays just fine.

I've just cancelled my order for it.  I have the splendid laser of the Todd-AO version, and I'll make do with that one for the time being.

This is true. There is only one national edition now and no regional editions.

I, too, prefer the old reliable TV GUIDE, but the business of TV has changed so much that having regional editions was just cost prohibitive.

The Todd-AO version supposedly has a dirty transfer and inaccurate color rendering. Every review has said the Cinemascope version (also included) looks better, though the sound is clearly superior on the Todd-AO version.

Oh my - continuing the crime beat:

The two teen agers on the lam, the boy suspected of killing the girl's parents in Pennsylvania yesterday, were found in Indiana about an hour ago.....at the intersection of SR39 and US 40.  The same intersection I drive through twice a day when headed for the famous Putnam County Playhouse.

The sad thing about the news Matt H has shared is that there is no fathomable reason why the Todd-AO version should be suffering on the DVD.  The laserdisc of the Todd-AO  version is fantastic...sharp, clear, well-balanced color, as I recall (it was highly rated when it came out on laser).

Suddenly, we get a botch job?  Doesn't sound right to me.

BK reviewed this DVD a week or so ago and he pointed out the problems with the visual.  IIRC, he mentioned the problems were in the early part of the film, and that the image greatly improved later.

It's probably worth having.  But it's also worth fixing...doing right...and I don't want to be stuck with a copy that might be corrected in a year.

My guess is the same as it is in when the costuming (or choreography or lighting) in an otherwise fine stage production is BAD:  somebody's boyfriend got the job! :)

I want my old TV Guide back.

I agree.

After nearly 30 years of subscribing I just cancelled my subscription to it.

They keep running commercials with an  over voice saying "What do you want from TV Guide?"

and then they show actors saying things like:

"I want TV Guide to give me behind the scenes info"  ::)

"I want to feel like I've been invited to a  Hollywood Party"  :P

"I want great pictures of the hot new stars of all the hit shows"   :-\

"I want to know every friggin detail of the personal lives of people I will never meet and who will be yesterday's news before you can blink an eyelash"  ::) ::)

"Oh and while you're at it... make it bigger"

PUHLEEZE!!!!

I keep yelling at the screen "I want it to tell me what shows are on what channels and when!!!!!  If I wanted PEOPLE Magazine I would have subscribed to People Magazine!!!"

and the new size is exactly the size of just about every other magazine in the house so you can never find the darn thing any more (cause it does not fit in the remote holder anymore) on the off chance that it might actually have some pertinent information as to what shows might be expected to show up on a certain channel at a certain time

They only print  Prime Time  shows in detail and then only for the National Channels  and half of the channels (the ones WE watch)  show as  "Local Programming" or "Various Programs"  Gee, Really?  I couldn't figure out for myself that they would have local programming on the local channels?!  What I want to know is WHAT IS THE LOCAL PROGRAMMING?!!!!!   What are the TITLES of the various shows programs being shown?!!!!!

 >:( >:( >:(

Hmmmm... maybe that's where I got the laryngitis  they showed that commercial an awful lot this weekend......

Fortunately, the on-line listings of TV Guide are still very good, and you can set it for your own region, broadcast or cable service.

I just cancelled my subscription to the magazine, and I wonder how long it will last competing as just another Hollywood celebrity-hype magazine.  Will people really buy it when they can get better listings in their local newspaper?

I understand the cost of Regional Editions - but gee that's why we bought it...LOL.  As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the NEW TV GUIDE is NEVER sold out at my local grocery store, and the racks are almost always full.  My guess is they haven't been restocked because they sold.  Somebody is eating a LOT of slick pages.

Indianapolis used to have THREE daily papers!  Two of them had weekly television schedules.  Now we have ONE daily paper, and I use the Indy Star's Sunday edition television listings booklet.  It is NOT the easiest to read, but it serves its purpose!  ;D

Seems like just yesterday, though, this was what came in the Saturday afternoon paper!  8)
