Last night, after I finished PINKY, I played it again to listen to the commentary track. It was very interesting, and I enjoyed it.

PINKY has a fairly grainy transfer with some light spotting running along the right side of the frame.

Its grain was all the more noticeable because after I finished it for the second time, I put in FOR ME AND MY GAL which has one  of those silky black and white transfers that is astonishing to look at. Wonderful film.

Not having gotten enough Judy Garland with FOR ME AND MY GAL, I put in THE PIRATE and watched about 15 minutes of it until my eyes started to get heavy. I'll finish it today before launching into something else.

Very sad for Michelle Kwan, but I appreciate her willingness to give a spot to an up-and-comer, and I wish Emily Hughes the best of luck with her first try at the Olympics.

Michelle has won two Olympic medals in her career, something very few skaters have ever accomplished. She has nothing to feel bad about.

I finally got through to the bus station in NYC. They said they are closed till tomorrow morning. I had thought that perhaps they would have had buses going out at midnight. But I guess not.

I wonder if my parents will have to sleep at the bus station. :(
Or if their cruise made arrangements for them.

Sheesh, I feel so stupid, cause I'm going to pick them up but I totally forgot that they were coming from NYC. And here I was listening to all of you talk about the storm, and I'm thinking "how cool". :(

I recorded ROSENCRANTZ AND GILDENSTERN ARE DEAD off one of the cable channels yesterday morning, and will probably watch it at some point today. I'm not sure I've ever seen the film version all the way through.

And I'm glad to see that ABC is not falling down and playing dead by showing nothing but reruns opposite the Olympics. New episodes tonight of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and GREY'S ANATOMY.

Did they sail out of NYC?  Or were they flying from somewhere into NYC?  And then bussing back home?

Well... They just said that all three New York City area airports are basically closed... Hold on... Airport update coming right now...

Ah, all airports are still open at this time, but most carriers have cancelled all flights for today.  Call your airline.

Oh, which bus system are they taking?  The public transit systems have basically suspended bus operations right now.

Hope your parents make it back safe and sound.

Actually no airlines. They are coming from a cruise. I wonder if the cruiseships will even be able to make it into NY? Actually that would be better if they were still on the ship.

I guess it is Port Authority - Greyhound bus which they will be taking.

No snow at all here, just frigid weather (-20C).  I had to turn on the car and lock it. Cause I want it to heat up before I go in.

Oh well I guess I won't have to pick them up tonight (which is okay). But now I'll be worried until I hear something. I don't want to think of them wandering around NYC with all their luggage.

I wonder if I can find out if the cruise arrived. I do feel bad for those people leaving again today (i think it's today). I'll bet many won't arrive in NYC. :(

Great snow pictures, DR JOSE.  I imagined you last night coming home from KISMET looking something like Lillian Gish in WAY DOWN EAST!!

Yes, DRMBARNUM, DRRODZINSKI has in his collection, in addition to anything you may have sent him....Miss Allison Hayes' magnum opus - her personal favorite of ALL of her films - COUNT THREE AND PRAY with the irritating Joanne Woodward front AND center!

Hmmm....when I was little, I would sometimes get names mixed up.  I always thought Katharine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn were sisters.  I was really confused about Van Heflin and Van Johnson.

And for a LONG time I thought Howard Hawks was Howard Hughes!

Oh, my, that's some snow in NYC!  We have "decorative" snow, just on the grass, rooftops, trees, but the roads seem to be clear.

DR Jose - thanks for the photos.  I hope you and all the other New Yorkers stay safe and warm and that travelers like Jennifer's parents are not too hampered by the conditions.

I, too, wish Michelle Kwan all the best.  Olympic silver and bronze medals are nothing to sneeze at and she has acted with class by stepping aside in time for Emily to savor her first Olympic experience.

So, my topic for discussion today:  What is your favorite moment from the Winter or Summer Olympics?  Mine was Paul Wylie's no-expectations trip to the 1992 games in Albertville and his silver medal.  I've always thought of 1992 as the last year of figure skating's "innocence," before the Harding-Kerrigan debacle.

Mayor Bloomberg is giving an update....

I didn't realize the New York City Parks Department has a First Day of Snow program... They provide sleds, hot chocolate, music, nature walks, etc. at various parks throughout the city on days like this.

-Oh, and at this point, all Broadway shows are scheduled to go on today as scheduled.  Hmm... Could be a good day to snag a cancellation ticket.  I wonder if some shows will be "inviting" people in. Does that ever happen? -just to fill the seats?

Kenneth Geist did the commentary on PINKY. He also contributed commentary to ALL ABOUT EVE and THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR.

There is NO street visible. And half our window sills are covered in snow.

I'd also like to get to Agatha Christie's THE PALE HORSE on DVD today. I only saw it once years ago on A&E and am looking forward to seeing it again.

Elias Koteas and Christopher Meloni are often mistaken for brothers. They are not related.

My favorite "snow days" were the 3 days leading up to Christmas 2004, my first Christmas here at HHW.  It started snowing here on Wednesday morning, Richard and I went to the grocery right away, and we didn't get out again until Saturday, which was Christmas day.  Richard, Rob, and I had 3 lovely days of Christmas cocooning.  Here's one of the photos from that time - the snowplow stuck at our corner.

My favorite Olympic skating moment: well, I had two.

1. Dorothy Hamill winning at Innsbrook. She skated with such freedom and joy (to Korngold music) and after winning silver medals at the previous two world championships, was considered a favorite for a medal but not necessarily gold since she was skating against the previous two world champions.

2. Brian Boitano winning the gold at Calgery with a stunning, perfect program. Again, skating against the defending world champion Brian Orser, the odds weren't in his favor.

I get cold very easily, so I'm not one who likes snow all that much. I love the pictures of snow, and it's undoubtedly one of nature's loveliest creations, but I never enjoyed playing in it as a kid as I'd get too cold too quickly and have to come inside. I'd almost always get the flu soon after, too. One time I got pneumonia after playing in the snow.
