A dark but very well done movie, imho, and... I'm not into "science fiction" at all!
Kathy Griffin was funny. I was not really a fan prior to this evening, but she really gets the crowd going. Sold out Carnegie Hall. She really puts herself on the line naming names, talking trash about people. It's not like she picks on innocent folks, so it works pretty well.
tonights Chic chick tip: ( even if no one else finds them interesting!)
Most commenly miss pronouced ( NY 1966) words and how to say them!

And the word of the day is: MACRAME!
And the word of the day is: MACRAME!Heather MacRame was known for her outlandish dresses, hand-woven and quite colorful, but scorned by her fellow members of the PTA because they were made of hemp. Heather thought her dresses were "smokin'!", and that the PTA bitches were clueless.
...Fantastica (only because I work on it. The scene I did was filmed in a gay porno theater, but was turned into a concert hall for the movie)This concert hall... it had a very large woodwind section, I assume?
...
There's one that I always forget the name of, but someone here can help I'm sure. UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG always reminds me of it because it ends with a bunch of homeless people flying off into the sky on umbrellas and broomsticks singing all the while.
Black and white French film. The plot involves homeless and poor people who set up a kind of utopian society on this little section of land, and the city drives them out. Until they fly away singing a song about socialism.
I think it IS Miracle in Milan, which does end with the townspeople flying off on broomsticks.
Favorite French Films: (That's FFF!)

THE BICYCLE THIEF
GRAND ILLUSION
Hi, Elmo. Howz yer dad?
I saw THE BICYCLE THIEF in college, along with MIRACLE IN MILAN. Isn't THE BICYCLE THIEF Italian, too? I still remember walking out of the theatre dazed after JULIET OF THE SPIRITS, because I didn't know what the hell it was!
Miami man sentenced to prison on weapons charges
By Nick Hytrek Journal staff writer
Even if it is hard to understand a man's hobby or beliefs, those personal qualities can't be held against him when considering an appropriate sentence, U.S. District Judge Mark W. Bennett said Friday.
So even though James Parsons owned a vast collection of firearms and what Bennett called "right-wing nut literature," the judge said there was nothing in the record to suggest the retired chiropractor from Miami was a violent man.
"Why he's so interested in guns is beyond me, but then I'm not a gun person," Bennett said. "There's no evidence other than this individual was a collector.
"This defendant has never engaged in a violent act that's on the record."
Citing a criminal record that included only an alcohol offense in 1958, Bennett departed from federal sentencing guidelines and sentenced Parsons to 12 months and one day in prison for one count each of possession of a machine gun and possession of a destructive device. He gave Parsons credit for six months already spent in custody and said that with good behavior, Parsons would likely be out of prison in four months.
He had faced a potential sentence of 30-37 months in prison.
Parsons, 67, was arrested July 20 after officers who stopped his moving van on Interstate 29 near Sergeant Bluff found three World War II-era machine guns -- none of which was registered -- and three hand grenades inside. Another 80 rifles and handguns, plus ammunition, black powder and books about explosives -- all legal items -- were found in the truck. Parsons told officers he had retired and was moving to Montana.
Federal agents also found weapons, ammunition, a rat trap rigged to fire two shotgun shells and a bullet-proof vest in Parsons' Miami home.
With all those weapons, Parsons was a man capable of violence who appeared ready to defend his home in Montana by any means necessary, prosecutors said.
Parsons is not a violent person, said two longtime friends who testified Friday.
"I have known this man for 20 years. I've never had the least bit of indication that James was a violent person," said Kenneth Loveland, a former Miami-Dade County Sheriff's officer who said he has attended several gun shows and shooting events with Parsons.
With his conviction, Parsons will not be allowed to own firearms. The future of his firearms seized in July remains uncertain.
Bennett granted Parsons' request to release the legal firearms -- some of them valuable collector's items -- to a friend to be sold, but automatically stayed his decision so that the weapons would not be disposed of before federal prosecutors could appeal his ruling.
If Bennett's ruling is overturned, the government would retain possession and likely destroy the firearms.
The machine guns and hand grenades will remain in government possession and likely be destroyed.

I better get going. We have a snow storm predicted for later tonight and into tomorrow. I have errands to run and some work to do at the office. I still want to catch the movie The Queen, but we'll see how the day progresses, I may have to do that some other night this week
Wow, I am no longer alone...3, count them, 3 DRs just popped in!
The Topic of the Day:
Amelie
La Cage Aux Folles (literally, The Cage of Fools)
Drôle de Félix (a.k.a. The Adventures of Felix)
The Return of Martin Guerre
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
and "The Triplets of Belville"
I'm off to work to make up a few hours. After that, I'm working concessions for a performance by Ladysmith Black Mambazo (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=809)! I don't doubt that it'll be a full house! When working concessions, I don't get to see the whole show, but they have the music on speakers in the lobby. I can pop in every once in a while, but if I'm ushering, I ususally would get to see the whole show. Oh, well...it'll be a fun night, either way. :D
I'm not much for French Films,
Not on topic at all but we watched Peter Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures" tonight. I've not seen it since it was first out. It stands up very well indeed.
I needed to do what you did TPunk. Unfortunately, with my schedule I couldn't stay home.
Tonight I'm going out to celebrate my friend's birthday. He just turned 24. I feel old.I'm going out to celebrate a younger friend's 60th birthday today. I FEEL OLD.
Thanks to my cough, I sound old.

I saw "Children of Men" tonight [last night, now] and have been home for a couple of hours. It was...interesting. Has anyone else seen this? It's about the world of 2027 where no babies have been born since 2009 or so (I think it was a flu pandemic, but they never say why no one is able to conceive after that, unless I missed something) and all illegal immigrants in England (where the movie is set) are rounded up and sent away...or killed. Anyway, Clive Owen gets contacted by his ex-wife, played by Julianne Moore. She wants him to ask his cousin (someone in the government) to get papers to get a girl out of the country and she'll pay Clive £5,000 (he really can use the money). He gets two sets of papers (he's going to escort her, for some reason) and it turns out that the girl is pregnant. The first pregnancy in the entire world in 18 years! They have to get her to some people who are part of a group called The Human Project and I guess that they will protect her. And that's the movie.
I just watched Ballet Russes....what a fantastic film!
I am very grateful to whomever brought this documentary to our attention here at HHW. Thank you!!!!!!!
DR MusicGuy - For the audiobook of "Kavalier & Clay", who was the reader?
Frankly, I would like to see it done as a mini-series of sorts, or at least a mega-movie - some five or six hour deal.
Hmm, I've never had a NY egg cream. Should I put that on my list of things to do during my next trip?
JRand, probably the funniest part of Kathy Griffin was her recounting her various run-ins at different parties with Lindsay Lohan, who would one time behave like she was a big fan of Kathy, then the next time like she had no idea who Kathy was.So, Lindsay is still playing identical twins?
Rather than the usaul suspects, here a list of French films I have enjoyed recently:
Strange Gardens
8 Women
Nelly & Monsieur Arnau
Les Miserables (The Jean-Paul Belmondo version)
Train Of Life
Etre et Avoir (Documentary)
Wow! You mean they did LES MIZ in France, too?
I must now be on my way to sup and opening night, after which I shall return. Keep the home fries burning until my returning.
Will we ever get to page eight?
Jane - the plot of CHILDREN OF MEN vaguely reminds me of the TV movie THE LAST CHILD, where no family was allowed to have more than one child. Is it possible that's what you're thinking of?
However, I am intrigued by the sneakers in the punch bowl? Is it an Oregon religious rite or ritual?
We have our work cut out for us, DR Elmore!
It must be some strange Wyoming rite.
I'm assuming that that "typical" "Quel fromage!" English expression means "Quel dommage!" (What a pity!) in French! I'm assuming!
Of course it is! I had temporary insanity. I meant to type THE 400 BLOWS. Just goes to show what happens when your mind is on something else.
And speaking of Wyoming rites....Mark, James, Digger, Herbie and Fat Cat are all movie to Wyoming next month :'(
I loved the doggie pictures, DR MBarnum, but Mark and James are also fine male specimens themselves!
...taught me that I can even be friends with a conservative Republican...and Mark learned that liberals are human too. LOL!Hey, don't forget, der B and I are moderate Republicans. And we value knowing you.
I am the ONLY vote for 8 WOMEN? And Tati has several? Where is le justice?
Quelle frommage.
The recipe that der B brought with him to the store had a few problems.
The taters (chips) came out sorta OK.
The fish itself was very good.
The batter, based on beer and rice flour, was...
:P
I need to go back to the drawing board. This is clearly something he wants in the repetoire, but not in it's current incarnation.
Alton Brown, help me!!!
Anyone have a good recipe for something with turkey thighs? I usually roast them, but I'm thinking I might like something a little more exciting
Good evening, fellow Dear Readers. I got up at 6 am, went to the airport and flew to Ontario, CA, for an exciting day of meetings, then flew home again. And boy are my arms tired.
I have to say that using that saline nasal spray seems to have ended my sinus pain and runny nose. Who would have thunk it. Well my mother, she told me about it, I just didn't listen at first
OK... I'm afraid I'm going to have to cry, "Uncle" - or "Oncle". I need sleep.
Bonne nuit.
The only thing I can say about French films is that most of them are better than most Ingmar Bergman's films.
Dear BK,
I can no longer eat the Chinese food my DH brings home. I have been spoiled by Genghis Cohen.
Here 's a great review of Sacco and Vanzetti http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/yates211206.html

DR Cillaliz, Peter told me to send you a big "hello" and wishes you luck when you take the plunge back into the freelance world. We both think you'll do great!
I know what you mean Laura! That food was good!!! AS was the company!
DR Cillaliz---you must indeed have an egg cream when you're in NY, made by Jose at Eisenberg's. Yummmmm! And say hello to Josh, the owner. I hope we will make him famous!
Here's the address---it's near the Flatiron Building.

DR Edi- thanks for mentioning the Hotel Edison way back when. I have a reservation there and am looking forward to dining in the cafe. I saw some photos on the net. Looks like my kind of joint
It's good, and relatively cheap! The waitresses are nice; some of them look like they've been there since the Edisno was built!
If you notice the staircase on the southside of the lobby, it goes up to a recording studio where they recorded "The Producers" OCR, among other things.
A movie that touched me was Au Revior, Les Enfants. It is a gut wrenching movie.
I forgot about that one, as well as La Letrice!
Welcome back, François!
Now, here's a question for all - why do we pronounce the word thermometer as ther-MOM-eter? Given that it is two words portmanteaued together, shouldn't it be THER-mo-ME-ter?
In honor of Ron:ARE YOU ON THE LIST?
Welcome back to you too!
I was wondering where you'd gone!
I'm happy the film is making such an impact! And I'm one of those people who do think that editing is crucial to the quality of a movie and as important as good direction!
A movie NOT TO MISS from Canada I deeply enjoyed recently: CONGORAMA! It's a comedy that takes place in Belgium and Canada!
