Why not walk to Levain?

Well... We actually walked past Levain... And past Magnolia... And past Buttercup Bake Shop... And past Grand Daisy Bakery...

The cruise coordinator who hired me two years ago for the Quacker Cruise is in town this week, and he's treating all the "Quack Tones" to dinner tonight at Becco!  So, I'm saving my major caloric consumption for later... burrata, ricotta with honey and black pepper, grissini, osso buco, farro, gelato, grappa, bracchetto, etc., etc., etc.  :)

I was just stunned (stunned, I tell you....just STUNNED!) to learn that "The Ritz" has been available on DVD since January 6th.

I remember folks writing about it last year and saying it was supposed to be released this year.  It was.

Ordered it, I did.

Was I asleep at the wheel....again?

I am imagining, in my mind's eye, what a "Quacker Cruise" might consist of.

Also a "Quaker" cruise.

My friend John and I went to get doughnuts this morning. Imagine our surprise that the Krispy Kreme place near my house and closed its doors. So we headed down South Boulevard to Dunkin' Donuts and had our breakfast there. They seemed to be doing very steady business.

I think you will find that almost all of the Krispy Kreme stores will be closing their doors.

Again, more typing and typing just to hide the possible spoilers - and, frankly, I really do think this is getting out of hand.

Things I think I want to know:

Hey DR George:  Did you see my question yesterday about your having seen "Jumbo"?

And, since it was proposed here, were you able to ask your friend about DR TCB's step son?

Sorry, but I missed your "Jumbo" question...No, I haven't seen "Jumbo."

And thanks for reminding me about Buzz, TCB's step-son.  I talked to Jeff last night and he said that the last time that he'd heard from Buzz was maybe 3, 4 or 5 years ago (he can't exactly remember how long ago), but he'd gotten an e-mail from Buzz saying that Buzz was either Texas or New Mexico (Jeff couldn't remember exactly, but more than likely Texas...and probably a big city).  Buzz had written a book and asked if Jeff could tell people about it.  Buzz said that he'd written a...and I'm quoting Jeff who was specifically quoting Buzz...a "porn novel."  Not "erotica," not a short story, but a "porn novel."  Jeff said that he would NOT tell people about it and that was the last that he'd heard from Buzz. :-\

You must have been.

I discussed it after watching the dvd - and made mention of the EVITA connection.

bk discussed it several days later in his notes.

I just checked one of the library's databases (OCLC) and there are several videotapes from Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park of their productions that were produced by someone named Buzz Ward, but I don't think it's the same Buzz Ward.  Here's his picture from their website:

DR George, in connection with SIDE SHOW, have you also taken a peak at WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, a novel which superbly captures the time period and milieu associated with The Hilton Sisters?

It has been mentioned that someone is tampering with BRIGADOON.  ( I have an opinion on that, and it's not positive).
It seems also that SIDE SHOW is being revised by its creators with an assist from Bill Condon.

I've heard of the book, but I haven't read it.  Our library has it and there are 111 requests for the it!

TOD's Media Check:

ITunes:
Liza Minnelli in VICTOR/VICTORIA
Judy Kaye in ON THE 20TH CENTURY

CD Players:
HEIRONYMUS MERKIN/MERCY HUMPPE original soundtrack
IL ETAIT UNE FOIS - French soundtrack to - -
ENCHANTED  (the former is every bit as good as the latter, and the song sung at the ball is done by a more polished singer)

DVD PLAYER(s):
ENCHANTED - Promotional disc, which Mum has now watched thrice; myself, twice.
DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL - Indian/British film about football, race relations and southern London.  Quite a good film, with maybe only three songs. . .
CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE - finally watched this Val Lewton production, after reading the current issue of VIDEO WATCHDOG
SOUTH PACIFIC - The Roadshow Version with Richard Barrios' commentary track.
SOUTH PACIFIC - at Carnegie Hall with Reba McIntyre
VIVA LAS VEGAS, while listening to Steve Pond's commentary track.
Both of the commentary tracks I listened to this week were very fulfilling, I really enjoyed Mr. Pond's look at VIVA LAS VEGAS, and all the times he pointed out Teri Garr.

BOOKS:
Finishing Graham Greene's THE COMEDIANS, which the film, surprisingly, adheres to.
Robert Goddard's PLAY TO THE END - a mystery set in the theater world of Joe Orton and Brighton.

I have to share this perfectly wonderful review of the movie "10,000 BC" with y'all.  The reviewer's name is Ken Hanke and he was a wonderful wit and appreciation for what he has seen on the screen.

Check it out!

SOUTH PACIFIC - The Roadshow Version with Richard Barrios' commentary track.

Great version of the film, lousy commentary.

Ken, since he is a friend I don't have to be formal, is one of the greats!  He's been associated with Scarlet Street magazine for a while, too.

Is the commentary on the general release print any better?  It doesn't feature Mr. Barrios.
