I spent most of the afternoon with DODES'KA-DEN by Akira Kurosawa. Very different from most of his films that I've seen since there really isn't a single strong central story but rather a slice of life in a Shantytown with at least a half dozen stories. Usually I don't find this kind of storytelling that satisfying since you don't get to know anyone really well but have to make do with bits and pieces of all of their lives, but damn if I didn't get sucked into the stories and ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.
Admittedly, some of the stories are stronger and much more interesting than others (there are two village drunks whose story really irritated me; I didn't find them endearing or funny though I'm sure they were meant to be amusing.) Others were much more absorbing, but I still wanted to know more about the man "with dead eyes" and the pitiful young girl impregnanted by her uncle.
The transfer is, as you can imagine, quite beautiful.
