In other news...

I tried to catch up on posts and post when I got in last night, but by the time I got in last night, all I really had the energy to do was to get in my bed, turn off the lights and go to bed.  -Just barely.  However, I had a very nice day yesterday.  Spring was most definitely in the air, and everyone seemed to be smiling, happy and generous.

Really!  How was the reservoir?

When we were growing up, I don't believe we ever locked a door to the house.  If I lived in Ohio now, I'd have double locks on every door.

Sure you would.  You would be afraid that the Macbeths would come visiting.

I guess I'll give the head's up for our new release right now, and then again at midnight for those who miss it.  I suspect this one will go very fast.  You know the routine - it's $19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  We're very excited about this one.

“FEEEEEEED ME!”

Kritzerland is very happy to present a new limited edition CD:

THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Music Composed by Fred Katz

Long before the words “cult movie” existed, Roger Corman’s 1960 film The Little Shop of Horrors came along and pretty much defined those words.  Filmed in only two days (on sets left over from another movie) on a miniscule budget that today probably wouldn’t pay for the craft service table on a movie set, somehow all the elements—a truly witty script by Charles B. Griffiths, a wonderful cast, including Jonathan Haze, Mel Welles, Jackie Joseph, Dick Miller, and a young Jack Nicholson, and let’s-get-it-done direction by Corman—came together to make an inspired and hilarious comedy.  Little Shop was originally released as the bottom half of two double bills—first playing second to Mario Bava’s Black Sunday, and, a year later, playing below The Last Woman On Earth.  But it wasn’t those lower-half showings where it found its success—no, it was local TV broadcasts that made Little Shop a cult movie phenomenon.  That’s where most people discovered it, and over the years, thanks to endless video incarnations (the film is in the public domain) it has become a true classic, seen by millions of people.

“I’M HUUUUUNGRY!”

The score to Little Shop was written by Fred Katz.  Katz, born in 1929, was a child prodigy on both piano and cello, but would become a well-known cellist in the Los Angeles music scene of the 1950s—the first really to take the cello into the jazz arena.  He became part of the very unique Chico Hamilton Quintet and was both heard and seen in the film Sweet Smell Of Success.  At some point in the late 1950s, Corman found Katz or Katz found Corman and the two collaborated on several films, including A Bucket Of Blood, The Wasp Woman, Ski Troop Attack, Little Shop, and Creature From The Haunted Sea.  Katz’s score perfectly accompanies a film that is occasionally worthy of Ionesco in its surreal weirdness.  In fact, Katz’s music is as much fun as the film—it’s funky, jazzy, beat, hipster music, with occasional horror touches, that will keep a smile on your face or conjure up wonderful memories of Seymour Krelboin, Gravis Mushnick,  Audrey Fulquard, Burson Fouch, Wilbur Force, and, of course, the great Audrey Junior.

The CD is in mono, as recorded, and is in as close to film order as we could get it.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the last week of May – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Time for lunch.

I think I'll make a Kumato sandwixh on whole-grain bread (Arnold's Flax & Fiber Whole Wheat), dressed with Hellman's Lite Mayo.

These fellsa are butt-ugly - but really very tasty (from Mexico)

The bread is great (once you realize the bit of flax seed is not a speck of mold) - the seed adds a nice crunch to the bread.

I am between services right now on a very stressful morning.

I awoke this morning to discover Betsy had left the garage door open and the garage light on, evidently from when her parents left last night.  I soon realized our cars had been broken into.  My cell phone, a work name badge and perhaps a garage door opener to the new house are all missing.   My car was in total disarray, which was the most disheartening thing.

I'm sorry.  I'm sure Betsy was a bit out of it from the meds.

...Seymour Krelboin...

Well, I was about to make a bitchy remark an "editorial comment" until I discovered that the Musical version  changed "Krelboin:" to "Krelborn".

Now must order same.

And I'd also like to sit and watch something like WONDERFUL TOWN (the televised Roz Russell version from the 50s.)

I am not old enough to remember that version.

Well, I'm old enough that I saw the original Broadway run! (My first B'Way show)

I'm sorry to hear this, and I know how invasive and terrible this is, but I do have a question. You moved into a new place and don't have an alarm system?

We're not in the new place yet, Larry.

I was certain you'd moved. I cannot keep track of anything. I hope you will barricade the new house.

DAILY FINANCE

Quote
Anger Mounts as Sea Lions Are Killed for Eating Endangered Fish

At Bonneville Dam along the scenic Columbia River that divides Oregon and Washington states, a battle is raging between two species of mammals at very different levels of the food chain. At the top, of course, are humans, who say they are trying to prevent depleted populations of endangered Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout from coming any closer to extinction. Lower down, are hungry California sea lions, who've discovered that the dam -- located about 37 miles east of Portland -- is an excellent place to feast on the fish during their annual run.

Not so surprisingly, the sea lions are losing. Year-to-date, six of the portly pinnipeds have been euthanized by state wildlife officials under a special federal program that basically allows them to be killed if they are caught eating endangered fish. But as the sea lion death toll mounts, so too does the anger over their deaths.

Leading the protests has been the Humane Society of the United States. The animal welfare organization takes issue with the fact that area fisherman are allowed to catch and keep up to 16% of run -- expected to be a record 470,000 fish -- while sea lions are estimated to be munching on 4% of the run, says Sharon Young, marine issues field director for the organization.

"This is about the integrity of the [fisheries] management program," says Young. "You can't sensibly say that a 4% take by sea lions is unsustainable and yet at the same time allocate up to 16% for fisherman. It makes no difference to the fish who eats them."

Before a sea lion is killed, several criteria must be met, according to the program, which is administered by the Oregon wildlife officials, their counterparts in Washington state and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Among the requirements, the sea lion must be individually identified, must be observed in the Bonneville Dam area on at least five days, must be seen taking one salmon and must have been present during one hazing operation.

In other words, officials are looking for "chronic offenders." Swart says the sea lions are "humanely euthanized" by a veterinarian.

The situation at Bonneville Dam could get even more complicated soon, says Young. Stellar sea lions are showing up in greater numbers to feed on the fish, she says. Because Stellars are protected by the Endangered Species Act, they cannot be killed.
...

"...euthanized by state wildlife officials ..."

Not to be confused with "slaughtered" or "executed". ( I guess by grandson "euthanizes" the deer we eat.)

"...It makes no difference to the fish who eats them."

And I suspect it makes no difference to the Sea Lions how they are dispatched.

And what Legal group allowed Fish to have more rights than sea lions?

Ah, what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive - Mother Nature.

der Brucer

Just how difficult would it be to control Sea Lion entrance to the river to begin with?
