DR Ben, I know a few people who attended the York Theater reading of Little Women. They thought that the original score was far superior to the score that they ended up choosing for the Broadway run.

BURBANK, Calif. - Actor Frank Gorshin, the impressionist with 100 faces
best known for his Emmy-nominated role as The Riddler on the old
"Batman" television series, has died. He was 72.

Gorshin's wife of 48 years, Christina, was at his side when he died
Tuesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, his agent and
longtime friend, Fred Wostbrock, said Wednesday.

"He put up a valiant fight with lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia,"
Mrs. Gorshin said in a statement.

Despite dozens of television and movie credits, Gorshin will be forever
remembered for his role as The Riddler, Adam West's villainous foil in
the question mark-pocked green suit and bowler hat on "Batman" from 1966-69.

"It really was a catalyst for me," Gorshin recalled in a 2002 Associated
Press interview. "I was nobody. I had done some guest shots here and
there. But after I did that, I became a headliner in Vegas, so I can't
put it down."

West said the death of his longtime friend was a big loss.

"Frank will be missed," West said in a statement. "He was a friend and
fascinating character."

Gorshin earned another Emmy nomination for a guest shot on "Star Trek."

In 2002, Gorshin portrayed George Burns on Broadway in the one-man show
"Say Goodnight Gracie." He used only a little makeup and no prosthetics.

"I don't know how to explain it. It just comes," he said. "I wish I
could say, 'This is step A, B and C.' But I can't do that. I do it, you
know. The ironic thing is I've done impressions all my life — I never
did George Burns."

Gorshin's final performance will be broadcast on Thursday's CBS-TV
series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

(Note from me: No mention of the film of BELLS ARE RINGING)

For the A.I. crowd, a question:

Would Bo be in the top 3 if he had a crew cut?

I've made a reservation at Joe Allen's at 8:15 pm.  I have no idea how many will show up, so I made it for 6 people.  Any DRs besides Rodzinski and Ben, let me know if you're planning on showing up, and when I get a better count I'll change the number or move us to Angus.

I never liked the Disney voice choices for WINNIE THE POOH, but then I never liked the Disney Americanization of Pooh either.

DRRodzinski, are we still on for INVASION tonight?

The Riddler was my favorite Batman villain because of Gorshin's manic glee. The way his speech would begin to choke off with the sheer joy of whatever devilish thing he was blabbering about. A really great portrayal.

In the longer obit I saw, they mention BELLS ARE RINGING. As mentioned recently, he was also good in the old movie HOT ROD GIRL. And excellent in a really weird movie from just a few years ago by Candian maverick Guy Maddin, TWILIGHT OF THE ICE NYMPHS with Shelley DuVall.

I remember him being very gracious in a local pre-Tony TV interview I watched a couple years ago.

Here's to Frank Gorshin, a guy who we should have seen a lot more of.

I can't remember if this has been asked before, but...

Is there any artist/group whose catalog of songs you think would actually make a good "jukebox musical"?  Something with a real plot and not just a revuesical?

I vote for The Mamas and The Papas.

I would also like to see the Duran Duran musical, just so they could recreate on stage that huge windmill/water torture thingy in the Wild Boys video.

I meant to comment on the passing of Frank Gorshin:  I only worked with him  once, for the Roxbury recording of GIRL CRAZY.  I thought he was a kind, friendly and very talented man.  I'm sorry to hear of his death.

Re: Bo on American Idol

I wish he would at least get a trim or use some conditioner!

Btw, anybody else find it weird last night that Simon was praising Bo way more than carrie.  I thought he wanted Carrie to win???

I dunno, maybe he could sense that Bo was maybe not going to make top 2 and that carrie was going to for sure.

I'm assuming vonzell is gone tonight?

Any other predictions?

Who knows which way the voting wind blows?

I thought Carrie lackluster in the extreme last night (third or fourth time in a row, actually).

I like Bo and Vonzell for the final 2.

Simon made his Carrie prediction on the second or third competition.  He has since lauded Bo virtually every time Bo has performed.

In recent weeks, he's told Bo he makes the others look like amateurs.  When Carrie has been "on," Simon has praised her, but he has told her that she is "robotic" a couple of times.  I think he genuinely wants Carrie to be better, but he's backing Bo because he's performing better...up to a level Simon hoped Carrie would rise to.

But that's just my personal observation.

DR SANDRA - my Jr High 8th Grade Science Project was on Heredity!  I cut pictures of grown-ups and children out of magazines like the Saturday Evening Post and created a family tree of two sets of grandparents, a husband and wife, and a child, and showed dominant and recessant genes.  I got an A!

And by a strange coincidence - two of my younger brothers and one of my  younger sisters did the SAME project when THEY were in the 8th grade.  They also got A's!

HMMM, I wonder what they inherited?

I watched ALL three Idols singing last night.  I don't like them at all, but that's okay....maybe ALL of them will go home tonight!

Stanley Holloway is NO prize either.  His lip movements NEVER match the vocals in "With a Little Bit O' Luck".  But Sterling....well...well....WELL as Cass Daley used to say!

DR Jrand, i'm not that thrilled with the Idol contestants either.  I mean they are all fine.  But I don't love any of them, and don't really want any particular one to win.

DR RonP, interesting observations about Simon. I wonder if you are right (and that he has switched his vote to Bo). I still thought he was backing Carrie.  Although like you said, he has been harsh on her on occasion.

Btw, I thought that Clive Davis' song selections last night were the best.  I loved what he had each person sing (and that was my fav performance for bo and carrie).

We didn't have a Science Fair in Junior High.

In the 9th grade I did a project on extracting third and fourth roots of numbers, I didn't win anything in the Denver competition, and I thought the whole thing was terribly unfair.

In the 10th, 11th and 12th grade, I did projects on functions of complex numbers, concoids, and... hmmm, I forget what one of them was.  But I place first in Denver every one of those years.

In my senior year I was sent to the National Science Fair in Seattle, but it was part of the World's Fair that year (the year they built the monorail and the Space Needle), and we got sort of lost in all the hoopla.

I did win a prize there, from the US Navy.  They sent a lot of Science Fair winners for a week at the Naval Base in San Diego (it was supposed to be a week on an aircraft carrier, but none was a vailable), with lots of cool tours of military things, a nuclear submarine, and ... stuff.

And that is my science fair story, Sandra.

Good Afternoon!

Back from rehearsal... And what a great rehearsal it was.  Really.

Since the show is sitting down in DC for a while - two months - they have the "luxury" to take the time and tweak things in the pit and in the house, sound-wise.  The conductor's biggest concern was getting the balance correct between the two guitarists, one of whom is new (a local).  However, even the "veteran" had some adjusting to do due to a new amp, pedal system and the acoustics of the theatre.  It was a very neat, but not at all tedious of process, of "building" things up from the bottom.  He would start a number with just the drums, bass and guitars playing.  Adjustments would be made.  Then the percussion was added.  More adjustments.  Then the keyboards.  More adjustments.  It was very neat hearing how everything fit together.  It was sort of like a rock 'n' roll version of "A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra".  :)

I actually got to sit back and listen for the first hour, and then after the break, I was recruited to play Keys 2 while the conductor sat in the house.  Lots of fun.

And we finished 20 minutes early too!  And since it was a three-hour minimum call...  $$$... Well, more like $, but still $.

;)
