Title: I HEART NEIL SIMON
Post by: bk on June 08, 2013, 11:59:01 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes hearted Neil Simon and also spoke of a book signing, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently performing Mr. Simon's special version of The Odd Couple for cows - The Odd Cows.

BK, that's too bad about the Parisian cake (and the "friends"), but it sounds like the reading itself went really well!

Well, yesterday was a good two-show-and-cast-party day!  First, I went to my sister's to drop off a box of stuff and then I went to the theater.  David, the sound designer, was going to come by early to troubleshot mic problems that happened the night before, but he wasn't there when I got there at about 11:15 a.m.  He eventually did show up, but I pretty much figured out what happened on my own.

Post by: George on June 09, 2013, 01:27:38 AM
One actor's mic just wasn't working at all (it was fine at the pre-show mic check), so he had no amplification at all during Friday night's show.  Another actor's mic was popping and crackling during the entire show, and I forgot to check on his during intermission (my bad).  So yesterday, I swapped microphone cords and microphone heads and determined that Harrison's mic problem (the mic with no sound at all) was the cord.  I swapped it out with the last spare cord and it worked perfectly.

Post by: George on June 09, 2013, 01:27:49 AM
Xander's mic problem (it popped all throughout last night's show) was the connection between the cord and the mic head.  I switched his cord with another actor's mic cord and the other person's mic was perfect.  Xander's mic did pop a couple of times...but ONLY a couple of times.  It was otherwise a success!

Also, there was a plan to re-record a couple of songs in between the two performances because Ben, who plays the King and a King's servant (not at the same time, though) and Royce (the man on the bus), had no microphone at all during the run, and he has several featured moments during some of the songs.  They only had access to nine mics for ten actors.  Since Ben had trained to be an opera singer, he didn't really need a mic for the live audiences.

Post by: George on June 09, 2013, 01:36:27 AM
As for the plan to record during the two shows...evidently, no one told the band.  A couple of band members had to leave during the break between shows and so they'll have to do something else.  One idea was to record Ben singing over the existing recordings and add him to the mix.  They felt like it was a possible option and a fairly inexpensive idea.

BOTH performances were sold out and today's last show is completely sold out, too!  After the second performance yesterday, we had a cast party that was just a lot of fun...fun conversation, good food (and even a couple of casseroles that are mentioned "Cinder Edna") and a whole bunch of good people.  It was a fun way to end the day. :D

I am back, an hour later! And so is the dog. No new posts, though.

I woke up this morning, and this crazy melody/lyric from my remote youth just popped into my head:

"If you sit on his lap today,
A kiss a toy is the price you'll pay..."

I'm guessing it is from one of those old Rankin/Bass animated Christmas specials, but does any DR know which one?

Good morning, all.

A decent sleep, which is lucky considering the shape I went in upon retiring last night.  I didn't over-eat, but however I did eat yesterday afternoon gave me a good old fashioned stomach ache which persisted throughout the evening.  I fell back on an old home remedy that almost always helps an upset stomach:  a spoonful of sug peppermint oil in a glass of cool water, sipped slowly (because it's very strong)...and just lie down and let the healing commence.  It finally did, and I slept soundly, with only one of my trademark weird dreams about my little studio apartment on Clark Drive in Beverly Hills, the unholy cluttered mess it was in, and a guy I'd called in to clean the carpet who tried to sell me a wildly expensive carpet shampooing machine and who wouldn't even complete the job he'd started.  Oy!

More Dunkin' coffee!

I'm reading Legends, the infamous play by James Kirkwood that starred Carol Channing and Mary Martin. It's from 1986. It played for a year all over the country and never opened on Broadway. As I'm reading it I can see why it never opened. IMHO, so far the play is DREADFUL!!! I will read his book about the whole brouhaha, called Diary of a Mad Playwright, when I've finished the play.

I know there were many reasons why the show never made it to Broadway but I really think that one of them was the play stinks and even two stars couldn't save it.

Today, some cleaning up around here (those dreams always inspire that), then the Tony Awards broadcast at a friend's house.

I'm sorry to be E&T for this one, but I've wanted to accept their invitation to join for one of these for the longest time, and am finally doing so, and there's no way to be online from there.  I will look forward to getting back and ketchuping on the whole thing in one fell swoop.  I do love a fell swoop.  Don't you?

I'll have to get that Blu-ray of THE ODD COUPLE.

After just having watched THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE, I can only imagine Robert Evans putting forth the same attitude in ANY documentary about ANY film.  That's a hoot.  But it's unfortunate that so much of the material included is so lacking and unbalanced.

Does any film or video exist of any of the original stage productions?

From my recollection of reading this (lo, many years ago), it had some of the same problems that did in Moose Murders - a bad script to begin with, plus at least one star that could not learn their lines.    :P

I should mention for DR Ginny's reading pleasure that I fondly remember first seeing THE ODD COUPLE on a delightful evening out with my family at the Mariemont Theater.

Those, of course, were the days with packed theaters full of people of all ages loving and laughing their arses off at the latest Neil Simon film.  Some magical times were had.

Good morning, all! I have lots to accomplish today, so we'll see how far I get. I slept late, so my schedule's screwed up, but I must head down to Toyland for a bit of work. Then, I must stop for a birthday gift and stop at the market to pick up something I'm taking to tonight's Tony party.

As I posted last year, I believe, I once looked forward to the Tony Awards, but the further I get from working on Broadway, the less I care about them. My friend Peter Lawrence was gven one yesterday in the awards ceremony they feel no one cares about, and I'm very happy for him.

I saw a scene from Kinky Boots and didn't realize that the lead female was Billy Porter until I saw a list of the Tony Nominees and pictures from their shows!.

Is this the same Billy Porter that recorded Where's Love on Liz Callaway's album: The Story Goes On?

DR FJL, you are correct about that! FINIAN'S RAINBOW happened after I'd decided my chances of being involved with a Broadway production were nil. Still, given what's playing and being optioned, I think my chances of another are very low.

And greetings from Toyland!

Last night around midnight, the raccoon was back by my window. It scratched and scratched and I could tell it was trying to get in. I went outside several times to try to see where it was and to chase it away. Boo got out one of those times, at 2:00 AM and luckily I grabbed her in the yard, but that was a huge scare.

When I got back in I could hear the raccoon in the wall or at least I'm pretty sure she was in the wall. I banged on the wall and made noise trying to show this isn't a good place to call home. It finally got quiet and we went to sleep. This morning I looked out and the eaves over the front door (right under my bedroom window) have been pulled away and so has some of the facia (sp?) I'm pretty sure that it made a big enough hole to get in the walls. It would make sense from the sounds we were hearing. The cats were wound up and frankly so was I. I think it was the first time the raccoon actually got in

This morning after chasing down the paper carrier in my pajamas to get my newspaper, I met Paul at Panera (after forgetting about a detour between here and there and having to go back) I asked some police officers there (getting coffee) what to do, they said call animal control. Animal control called me back and said all their traps are rented out, but if I found one they would empty it. They did give me the number of a private trapper and since it's not raccoon season he has to release them. I called him and he said he'd be here in an hour! That was about 1/2 hour ago. He's not cheap, but he'll take care of it. Now I'll need a carpenter to fix the damage.

It's been one thing after another for the past 10 hours. Luckily I have a sense of humor. Oh did I mention that the Journal put a photo of me in today that looks like I'm constipated? LOL! I sent them a photo the first time they published this one and said I'd prefer they use it. It was just a quote about immigration no biggie, but it was one more thing to laugh about.

I can't wait until the trapper gets here. I've had about 2 1/2 hours of sleep and really want to take a nap.  The biggest scare last night was Boo running outside in the rain at 2:00 AM. I knew there was at least one raccoon around and they can be very vicious when cornered.  Plus, she's an inside cat.  Anyway, I flew out the door and down the steps and got her right away.  She was wet, but safe

It wasn't amusing last night as the raccoon was ripping a hole in the wood and pulling the eaves off, but once I knew he wasn't going to chew a hole in the wall and come into the living area of the house I was able to sleep.  This morning it all seems quite amusing.   So JRAND is there some astrological reason that everything is bonkers for me right now?

Paul's sister lives about 6 blocks from here.  They have trapped 30 raccoons so far this year.  I'm really hoping we don't catch that many, it could get very expensive for me to have the trapper man do it

Mark and I had a fabulous time at the reading yesterday. Bruce was his usual very funny self. And it was a happy accident for Mark that the cake wasn't available because that prompted Bruce to get a strawberry shortcake, which Mark had two pieces of. Normally, Mark doesn't get any cake because he's allergic to chocolate. Anyway, there was much back and forth discussion over where to dine, Granville or BJs. As soon as we got our menus, Bruce started obsessing over the calorie counts of everything. Jenna announced, "I always order the wrong thing in restaurants." She decided on the pot roast and Bruce immediately blasted her over hour many calories it was. And this girl is so skinny! Then Bruce is muttering, "the calorie counts at Granville aren't this high," which I found hysterically funny. Anyway, I'm sorry to read Bruce wasn't happy with his seafood, but Jenna was very happy with her pot roast (finally, she ordered the right thing!) and my turkey club sandwich was very nice. We tried to pay for our meal, but Bruce would have none of it! He was very entertaining and sang to us a couple selections from the last Kritzerland show we missed. We will be sure to attend the British invasion because Bruce is threatening to take away our beloved reserved table up front. Nooooo!!

Thanks Elmore.  There are tons of coons around here. Animal control told me they use the storm sewers as a highway to get around town. The best part of this is the trapper does it all outside.  My biggest problem will be figuring out when there are no raccoons left in the walls so I can patch the hole.  I don't want any to die in the wall, that would be very unpleasant for all of us

Yes, Ben, you are correct.  The play really sucked.  And actually neither actress did anything to help the show.  The whole thing was like watching a car wreck, where both drivers are at fault.

The trapper is a DNR Certified trapper. He does trap and release during the off season (it's the off season). He's already been here and set the traps. They are live traps, won't hurt whatever gets caught in it. We'll release anything that isn't a raccoon here and the raccoons he'll take away and release far away from here. I feel much better, but I know this is far from over

That's one of the legends Kirkwood couldn't tell while Martin was alive.

Love the Mariemont Theater!  We don't go there often, though, because it's quite a trek from our home.

Hard to understand that it was even revived with Joan Collins and the blond with wings, whatsername from "Dynasty," Linda Evans?

It's kinda like the book from the author of Moose Murders who blames the show's failure on Eve Arden.

From my recollection of reading this (lo, many years ago), it had some of the same problems that did in Moose Murders - a bad script to begin with, plus at least one star that could not learn their lines.    :P

Yeah, so what was June Anderson's excuse? Or Kristin Chenoweth's? Both of theirs are dreadful. I will admit I haven't paid attention to too many others' names, because I haven't enjoyed their performance, such as the woman on the 1974 revival cast recording or the New York City Opera Recording. In our second Michigan house we had to set traps in our attic for red squirrels.  I think it was red ones.  We had a service set the traps though most mornings Bryan climbed up there and we took the trap to school with us and let the squirrel out in the fields near the school.  One day I could hear a squirrel in the trap but by the time I was able to climb up there, not easy because the distance between the stool and the attic was a bit high for me, the squirrel had escaped. :(

Once the squirrels were all gone we had the holes they entered through closed up.

In this house we had a problem with ground squirrels under the house.  We purchased a couple of traps and drove them far away from home.  Keith waited by the car (not wanting to leave it) on remote roads while I released the squirrels.

Trapping and releasing isn't fun but it is better than killing & much better than having them scurrying around the house.

Just tried to grow up, avatar-wise, and discovered that you can't modify your profile from an iPad.

I like this photo of you & am glad the iPad didn't work so we can keep it a little while longer.

As I posted last year, I believe, I once looked forward to the Tony Awards, but the further I get from working on Broadway,!

Larry, whatever its commercial fate was, FINIAN'S RAINBOW was widely considered an artistic success.  Maybe the next artistic success will also be a commercial success.

And I still can't believe that it wasn't a bigger commercial success.  Personally, i would have gone to see every performance, just to see Cheyenne!

I hope my sister is currently enjoying her birthday present.  Her birthday is not until the 19th, but a couple of months ago she said that she wished she could see the New York Yankees play against the Seattle Mariners.  She has never been to Safeco Field in Seattle, which is one of the most beautiful ballparks in the country.  So, I bit the bullet and bought her tickets for she and her husband.  I won't mention how much they cost, but I could have gotten a couple of good seats on Broadway.  The good part is that you don't have to worry about the game being rained out, because it has a retractable roof that can be closed anytime the weather turns bad.

My dad does that with ground squirrels.  One time he was driving one out into the country and it got loose in his van.  He said all he could picture was the squirrel going up his pant leg.  He was able to stop the car, find the squirrel and get it out of the van, but I really wish I could have seen the look on his face when he realized the trap was empty

Or Harolyn Blackwell's.

That's defensive, I think, and I didn't mean to put you on the defensive. The number is one fantastic number and hard to pull off.  It requires wit and subtlety, and those who push it miss the joke completely. Damrau is working too hard, and Chenowith fools a lot of people with her "operatic" voice that she doesn't maintain; she's sloppy vocally.

I can think of only three singers I like performing it, and none of them beats Barbara Cook. The three are Barbara Cook, Roberta Peters, and Marilyn Hill Smith.

And I am home from the party. There were far too many people.

And I didn't obsess about the skinny girl's calories.  I was noting the huge difference in calories between certain dishes - pasta dishes that you'd think would be around seven or eight hundred calories were 1800 calories, and a fried chicken breast on mashed potatoes in country gravy was eight hundred calories - it made no sense to me.

You should read the Facebook comments about the opening number - BEST OPENING EVER says Lucie Arnaz - and others can't wait to agree.  GENIUS.  BRILLIANT.  And anyone who doesn't think so hates theater and is a jerk.  We shall see which camp I'm in.

Shot of the audience from the back of the house revealed MANY MANY lit screens of people tweeting and Facebooking.....

I was very happy for the Best Supporting Actor; I've always liked his work. I was rooting for Spike; I liked Billy when he was on ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

I wonder, DR Cillaliz, if DROOD wasn't mentioned in the opening because it's no longer running. This show has become all about getting tourist butts into theatre seats and the cast coildn't be a part of the opening's routines.

That makes sense --- you are probably correct  Elmore

I think, if you want to see MATILDA, you should all watch the wonderful Danny deVito film.

I thought you'd made that clear already!

Oh, good. We get to see Victoria Clark show us how hard she acts next.

"The crowd loves it" - they're back at Radio City, where 90% of the audience are teens and musical theater FANatics who are told to scream for their favorites - I hate Radio City for these awards and it's just like American Idol crap.  Oh, for the days when the awards were held in normal B'way theaters and the theater community was the audience - not rabid, screaming kiddies.

Last year they went back to a regular theater, but I guess they didn't make enough money.

The Tonys more than any awards show, at least for the past decade, is all about the wrong things - little of it is about the awards themselves and a lot is about promotion and is paid for by the producers of the shows themselves - that's why Drood isn't there.

From inside the wall?

Not exactly sure.  It may just be the house creaking.  I don't hear it anymore. I'm a little paranoid.

As I posted last year, I believe, I once looked forward to the Tony Awards, but the further I get from working on Broadway, the less I care about them. My friend Peter Lawrence was gven one yesterday in the awards ceremony they feel no one cares about, and I'm very happy for him.

That's a great gift, Tom!

I hope I win a Tony Award tonight!

I've given up on that.  I never win anything!

I win drawings and such, but this sort of award, if there is one award, I come in second. If there are three, I come in fourth.  Quite irritating actually

OK, this is petty, but we've been winning a lot of awards and great reviews for the new doc, just won one today, and the person who did the most work (moi) and had the most creative input is rarely, if ever mentioned. I worked harder on this than anything in my life and think it's my best work, so it's just a little unmotivating reading how beautifully crafted it was by someone whose main contribution was the funding. Then again, it would never have been made without the funding, so I should be grateful, but it just bugs me enough to not be completely thrilled by those kind of accolades, and it bugs me even more that I can't be completely thrilled, if that makes sense.

Regarding the raccoon issue, lots of folks here have that problem with possums. A friend of mine had a recycling can crusher in his garage and a possum decided to build a "fort" and carried up dozens of crushed cans to the attic!

As for us, we just have snakes that migrate between the attic and basement, depending on the time of year. At least they're quiet!

I'm not sure what the performers get paid.  I do know the producers of each show pay for their own numbers that are performed - it doesn't cost the Tony people a damn thing.  I do not think that was always the case.

Title: Re: I HEART NEIL SIMON

Makes perfect sense Edi -  congratulations on the win and shame on those who don't remember why  they won

I'd heard that RCMH was booked last year and that's why the show went to a real theater.

Raccoons used to come in our cat door in Marietta to eat the dry cat food. They would moisten the food by swishing it in the water dish. It was cute until the first morning I stepped in a puddle of raccoon pee, and I learned that raccoons can spread rabies thru their saliva, and if they share a water bowl... So I got an allegedly coon-proof door (Art would wear a magnet that was like his "key") but they even figured out how to thwart that. They are smart little dudes!

the opening number was indeed big - and loud - and not that interesting due to really bad choreography - I suspect it's Rob Ashford and will be surprised if I'm wrong - but whoever it was is not good.  NPH is game for anything and fine.  I would have preferred an opening number from one of the actual shows, as in days of old.

DR Cillaliz, I was happy to read that Callie's health may be okay, and I hope that continues to be the case.

Your experience with the raccoon reminded me of the night in 2008 when I discovered my apartment was infested with bedbugs. I suspect you are in for several difficult months and I wish you a huge success getting rid of them and in not losing too much money in the process.

Matilda looks completely uninteresting - if it's a great show you certainly wouldn't know it by what they performed.  Worst thing about the show so far?  The canned screaming.  When you have shots of the audience and everyone is just sitting there like so much fish, and the sound is people orgasmically screaming and hollering something doesn't mesh.  It can't all be coming from the peanut gallery where the kiddies are - it's canned.

SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING THE TONYS:  1) Sometimes I feel like the last straight man in the American theatre 2)  There were so many old musical revivals, I kept waiting for The BLACK CROOK to be nominated for something 3) It's a sad statement when theatre legend set designer Ming Cho Lee's Life Time Achievement Award is reduced to a commercial seque blip 4) I kept thinking that I was just hearing the intro and kept waiting for the body of the song to begin during the KINKY BOOTS number.  People moving around on conveyor belts and shouting, "Let me hear you say yeah, yeah" ain't choreography or lyrics (but then I was rooting for Tim Minchin...a genius...and MATILDA). 5) Dear Broadway, please learn the difference between a musical theatre production and a concert. 6)Tracy Letts is a class act.

First of all, the characters introductions are horrible.  A true nadir of a show that didn't need further nadirs.  But Bring It On?  If that's what musical theater is today, if that's what can get NOMINATED for Best Musical then I want out.  Horrible song, worse choreography, and does no composer, arranger, orchestrator or choreographer know what a damn rideout and button is?  And dear Mr. Director of the awards show, stop with the canned screaming, really!

I am sorry that elmore doesn't care for Ms. Clark, and if I met her personally I might dislike her too.  However, she charmed and delighted me when I saw her in TITANIC, and I thought she was a delight tonight.

Yes, it looked like both transformations malfunctioned and Laura almost lost her footing getting onto the coach.  And the director of the broadcast should be put out to pasture for having cameras onstage circling the actors - tired, cliched, and completely inappropriate - someone explain to the fool what a proscenium is.

Saw most of the show at friends' house. Didn't like the bad sound.  Really liked the awards for Tracy Letts, Cyndi Lauper, and Kinky Boots. Hated, loathed, despised the Matilda scenes. And that's my two cents.

It is indeed! I have been spending much of my time the last few months in the hospital with my dad, so most of my internet time is on my phone. I like that you're able to embed pictures into the notes!

Vibes for you, your dad and your whole family.

I won't be able to catch up with all of the posts until tomorrow. But a few final thoughts: Pippin looked horrible, thanks to the way it was presented. Matilda sucked. Kinky Boots looked like it had possibilities. Cinderella lacked; badly. Motown could be entertaining, if they dropped the book. A Christmas Story could be fun. Bring It On was good for a bathroom break. All of it made me more interested in Hands on a Hard Body.

I loved the intro to the Tonys. I especially love Neil Patrick Harris. He is so fun to watch.

I think the Annie number was one of the best for trying to get people to go. Showing Jane Lynch (who many viewers will know from GLEE) was a good choice IMO.

Motown - what is different from watching an Elvis tribute or a Beatles tribute?  And the most appalling thing about every one of these musical sequences is the horrid choreography.  It's like choreographers have done nothing but watch So You Think You Can Dance - once upon a time choreography was creative - it wasn't about flips and meaningless turns and steps - it was in service of the story being told.  Jerome Robbins, Gower Champion, Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett, Tommy Tune - the choreographers today don't even have the right to call themselves choreographers - it's like we've regressed to the bloody June Taylor dancers.

I'm not sure what the performers get paid.  I do know the producers of each show pay for their own numbers that are performed - it doesn't cost the Tony people a damn thing.  I do not think that was always the case.

I think that's crazy. Also when Broadway shows perform on other shows (Letterman, The View...) the producers have to pay the performers.

Annie proves once again that choreography has just hit its nadir - where Peter Genarro's was perfection, this was just posing and pointless and I loathed the new orchestrations.  Jane Lynch tried hard, sang loud and was completely unfunny, unlike Miss Loudon, Jane Connell, Ruth Kobart and any number of other hilarious Miss Hannigan's.  And the New Yawk accents?

It's funny about Pippin - for all this reinvention, they can't go all the way and still choreograph in the "style" of Fosse - many of the original steps and positions are there.  Why not do completely different?  I thought it was fun to watch, but I really hate the way Pippin sings.

Well, we happen to think your work is brilliant!
